Riddick honestly did not like feeling trapped, much less actually being trapped. The night before on the way to his room, Riddick was reflecting on the plaque in which seemed to hold his fate. But never one to accept defeat and certainly never one to give up easily, Riddick was also plotting. He would not accept that this was it for him.

Once getting to his room,Riddick put his strange meeting with the Elf out of his mind. Certainly the other man didn't like him and Riddick honestly had no plans to change it nor was in a hurry to run into anyone else on this planet.Thee room much resembled the one he had when he was in the military, still a good guy. It was simple, a bed, dresser, the necessities. With a few luxuries. Work out equipment despite there probably being a work out room here on the resort. Riddick was not a social person so this worked for him.

He also was not one that needed sleep apparently as he spent the rest of the night, thinking, reflecting and plotting. The lights were out, the welding glasses put to the side and he allowed himself relax as a small plan formed. When the sun came up, Riddick would go exploring. Make notes, take in the land. To him, regardless off rather he was wrong, the first place he would explore was the mountains in which he had woken up within. he was a survivor and a master at escaping. If there was a way out,he would find it regardless of how long it would take him.

The sun was just rising when Riddick grabbed his belt and his glasses, slipping them on as he opened his door and walked out. He didn't look around to see if anyone was about or around. He didn't care. Riddick, made his way from the lodging his memory good enough to remember the path taken to get here and took it back toward the mountains.

Ayla had woken early. She usually did. There was work to do, and it had been ingrained in her to get up before the men did so that breakfast could be ready and other things could be done. It had become a habit, and it was one that refused to break. It didn't matter if she slept in here, there was no one keeping tabs on her. But, no one had been keeping tabs on her in the Valley of Horses, either.

But, regardless, she had risen just before dawn and decided that she was going to do some hunting. She knew she didn't need to, but she wanted to keep up on her skill. If she didn't practice, she might as well give up hunting ever again. She couldn't do that, not if she was ever going to leave this place, anyway. She washed up and then tied her hair back from her face with a leather cord and a few well placed braids. She tucked her sling into the thong tied around her waist and slipped out of her room.

She padded soundlessly down the hall and out into the predawn light. She could see enough to move quickly and silently toward the mountains. She had decided that there was probably more wildlife there than anywhere else. Her feet didn't make a sound as she traversed quickly over the terrain. She was unfamiliar with it, but that didn't slow her down any. She was used to exploring and she had the hunter's mentality. If you made a sound, you would scare away your prey.

She grabbed a few smooth stones from the ground as she moved along, tucking them into folds for easy access when she would need them. She stopped when she came to a fairly large boulder. Climbing up onto it, she scanned the area. Her quick eyes saw a hare as it darted out from the foliage and scurried toward the opposite side of the clearing. She pulled two stones out of her wrap and whipped one of them at the hare, bringing it down quickly. The second stone wasn't needed, but if she had missed, her second stone probably would have brought it down. She leaped off the boulder and ran to her kill.

She inspected it to make sure that it was truly dead, and not suffering. A quick snap of its neck would have corrected that problem. But the stone had done its work and killed the creature instantly. She picked it up by its feet and carried it with her as she continued further up the mountain terrain. When she had taken down another hare, she decided that it was enough and began her descent. She had seen a lynx and a few deer, but she didn't need the pelt and she hadn't brought Whinney along to carry the carcass back.

She was just winding down the path when she saw a rather large man headed toward her. She might have once evaded him, as she might have once evaded all men. But she had been told that women didn't have to act the way they were expected to in the Clan. So rather than hide and let him pass her by, she stepped out onto the path he was taking and nodded. "Good morning."

Riddick had very accute senses and he never did anything without a purpose nor reason. He made slow track of the valley's, taking his time, surveying every small inch of surrounding. Making mental notes on everything. Again he was an escape artist, he had survived much in his life.He would not admit defeat this time.If the cells of the prisons back home, and countless bounty hunters couldn't stop him, then he was sure that not much could.

There was no sense of time. Riddick wasn't sure how long he had been in the one area but it had been time to move on.Making his way down toward the hot springs. It was important that he knew every single part of the land. Every part of the planet. Of course he wasn't quite aware that soon it wouldn't matter sense the planet would eventually change. He would not accept that he was stuck here.Once more making in depth detailed notes.

It was time to explore the mountains.First spot of interest was of course to go back to where he had woken up, figuring that was the best place to start. If there was a way in, then there had to be a way out. The dark welding glasses covered his almost white eyes, the sun was starting to burn brighter which is why he had saved the mountains for, needing the shade of the trees to lessen the brutal glare to his eyes.

Riddick was one to be in tune with everything around him. He trained himself and was trained to hear everything, to feel everything around him. He didn't need to lift his head to tell there was someone just on the trail ahead of him. He also didn't need to lift his head to know that it was a female. Riddick was not a very social or kind person and sadly his attitude was not at its best considering his new circumstances.

Though his weakness was kids, the female species also held higher respect from him, though that probably wasn't saying too much than the male. Raising his head,he surveyed the woman in front of him, figuring every bit of information would help. She wasn't like the women he had came into contact with in his time, so it was a bit strange. Then he remembered that there would probably be a lot of people here that were from different lands, times and places. His voice was even as he spoke."Morning. "He paused taking in the fact that the woman obviously was a hunter being able to see some of the hare. " Take it the hunting is not too terrible around here."

Small talk was not a strong point with him and he also was not a hunter. Normally the hunted. But he figured if he could get to know some people around here he might be able to find a way out easier.

Ayla was starting to regret her decision to step out onto the path. Not that the man might not have seen her, or known she was there, anyway. But, at least he might have just passed her by without any trouble. But now she was face to face with one of the largest, and strangest looking men she had ever seen. Which was not altogether strange considering she had only come in contact with Neanderthals prior to the Cro-Magnon, Jondalar.

But, soon after Jondalar's recovery, she had been brought to Mirage. Having only met one other person like her, she had been dumped in a resort full of others who looked considerably different, but the same in certain ways. Their height, for example. Neanderthals tended to be less than average height, growing generally only to about five feet. Ayla herself neared six feet. She had towered over the Clan considerably. Yet another reason she'd never really fit in with them. Their heads were shaped differently as well. They had no chins, small forheads that sloped back to a large cranium, overhanging brow ridges and larger more flat noses. They had often been called Flatheads.

So, to see a man more muscular than them, much taller than them, and hairless, was quite a stark contrast. She was almost the same height as the hulking man in front of her, but she tended to make herself appear smaller by crouching slightly. It had been a habit she'd fallen into while living with the Clan so that she wouldn't appear too much taller than them. This man could have easily been two Clan men put together.

What she couldn't get over was what he was wearing on his eyes. She had never seen such a contraption before. What was it for? She didn't mean to stare at it, but it was such an anomaly that she couldn't help herself. When he spoke, she was almost startled. His voice was as rich and deep as any she had heard. It was new and different, and pleasing. She managed a small smile and looked down at the hares in her hand. She held them up slightly. "No, the hunting is good."

She was having just as difficult a time as he was making small talk. She didn't know what to say to him. She realized that she didn't know his name, though, and that could be a start. "I'm Ayla. Are you new to Mirage?" She hadn't seen him around, and knew she would remember if she had. He was such a large man and the goggles on his face were so strange there was no way she could forget him.

She didn't want to hinder his progress, so she turned and moved to walk alongside him while they spoke. She wasn't sure why she was doing it, but her natural curiosity would not let her go away without knowing what those things were on his face.

Riddick knew the people he would come in contact with would be different. And now that he allowed himself to study the woman he had come in contact with, she was no different. Most women he knew were shorter, softer, not as strong in stature. This woman though was almost as tall as him. Riddick was considered as normal height in his world, but above average and normal in build and stature. Nature and nurturing had made Riddick strong, built, muscled. His heritage gave him many strong and unique abilities. His size often shocked his enemies and caused them to underestimate him which was always a huge mistake.

Riddick honestly was not one to make small talk or friends but he was also never one to be rude to the female species. unless of course he had reason. When the woman smiled, Riddick felt compelled to return a small smile. He also noticed she kept looking at his goggles that covered his eyes.Believe it or not he was used to this.Even people where he came from were thrown off by these. But he never offered it up unless asked. He listened as she spoke."The names Riddick and yeah arrived here last night though I have no clue as to how in the hell that happened."

He was considerably nicer to this person than to the man who had the misfortune of running into Riddick when he arrived. As he began to walk he noticed that she had joined him. Maybe she could tell him somethings that would make finding a way out of here easier for him. He also wondered when she would give into her curiousness and ask her question.

"What can you tell me about this place that would make it easier to get the hell out of here?" Riddick was also from a place where he never watched his mouth or his wording so he was sure one day he would offend someone if they knew his language. As he walked with Ayla, Riddick took survey of the land and mountains, making more mental notes.

He stopped at an opening where there were two different choices and thought about it before taking the path along the right. With a small smirk,he decided to be bold and well a smart ass. "There's a saying where I'm from about curiosity killing the cat.You have a question, go ahead and ask it."

As they walked, Ayla tied the feet of the hares with the thong that held her wrap closed, so that they dangled at her hip. Her sling was also tucked into the thong and bounced slightly as she walked. She was a thin woman, but naturally toned. She had lived in a time where there were no vehicles to take you places. She had her horses, yes, but they were friends more than ways to go places. Although, they did that, too. Still, she walked a lot, she hunted, she swam and she ran. Everything was a physical effort in those days, and it kept her in shape.

She was also curvy, but with the way the shapeless animal skin draped over one shoulder and fell just to the tops of her thighs, there was no way to know that. It certainly wasn't a flattering outfit, but it was what she knew, and it was comfortable. It felt strange to be walking next to someone who was the same height as her. Not someone she would have to look down on, but one she could actually look in the eye. It caused her to walk a little straighter.

"I do not know how I arrived, either. I was in a meadow away from my cave when it happened. It was early morning, I was walking back to my tent and after a bit of spinning that made me slightly sick, I was here." She paused for a moment. "I have been here for several days now." Thinking, she counted on her fingers. "Ten days." She nodded, sure that she had counted correctly.

"I can tell you all I know about Mirage, which is not very much, but I don't know how to tell you to leave. If I did, I do not think I would be here now." She then began to speak, telling him everything she knew about the Planet. "The Planet is alive, it does what it wants, when it wants. It can change and grow. It does not discriminate between who it brings and who it leaves behind. There are large men made of earth substances such as rocks, mud, wood and clay. They help the Planet keep order, and I believe they are part of the Planet itself."

She looked over at him, her steps soundless and deft as she walked beside him. "I have explored as much as I could, sometimes into the night. I do not like to be unfamiliar with my surroundings. But as I said, the Planet changes. Each day I discover some new path that wasn't there before." She gestured at the two paths they had the choice of walking down. "Like this, for instance. There was only one path yesterday."

She looked over at him again, smiling a little uncomfortably when he addressed her curiosity. She had been too blatant in her wondering about his goggles. And she had been caught. She sighed softly. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to be rude. What is that you wear on your eyes?" She hadn't meant to stare, she was sure she was just as strange looking to him as he was to her. But he hadn't been rude about it, and she had. She was ashamed of herself.

Riddick was used to women either dressed in lavish dresses or robes like Dame Vacco or dressed like himself in cargo's,tank tops or t shirts and boots. This woman walking beside of him was honestly quite a mystery to him. Normally he would really care, however she was giving him much useful information and she was honestly a nice enough person.

He walked beside of her listening intently as he looked around taking in everything that Ayla was telling him and showing him.He was getting that the planet just snatched who it wanted and there was no real reason or pattern as to why they were being snatched. But Riddick would not give up and he sure wasn't one that liked to be trapped. "Surely there has to be some way to get the hell off this damn planet." It was more spoken softly to himself than to the woman beside of him.

Riddick judged the paths before them and took the one to the right. He figured it would eventually lead them to somewhere. Of course he wasn't thrilled with the knowledge of the planet always changing. It would make it harder. But he wouldn't give up. he paused after sometime and sat on a rock, over looking the land.

He turned his head to look at her, smiling a little once more and shaking his head."Don't worry you weren't rude.I'm used to people being curious and wanting to know. I am also used to them staring and trying to remove them. I'm not offended." He paused and smiled once more wanting to reassure her everything was okay which was odd. "They welding glasses to shield my eyes during the day. I have special eyes and they are ultra sensitive to light."he honestly wasn't sure how to explain his eyes to someone who wasn't from his planet.

After a few minutes he stood and stretched. "Tell me more about yourself, Ayla. What exactly is your story?"

Ayla slid her blue eyes toward Riddick at his muttered sentence. She sighed softly and then shook her head. "If there is, I'm not sure the Planet is ready to reveal it yet. It was strong magic that brought us here, it will take even stronger magic to get us off against it's will." Ayla wasn't exactly content with their life on this planet, but she didn't know magic, and she was sure that she wouldn't be able to get back to her own time if she did find an escape. But maybe the others didn't care about that.

She paused beside him as he stopped to sit on the rock. He was very observant, and she had no doubt that he could find a way off, if that is what he really wanted. He seemed like the determined sort.

She flushed slightly as he replied to her apology. She ducked her head, but was reassured that he wasn't angry, and that she hadn't shamed her people too much. Ayla wasn't sure what welding was, nor glasses, but she assumed it was the name for what he wore on his eyes. And she understood that they were for protection. But, she didn't want to ask any more questions, so she let it go.

"My story?" She looked up at him as he stood and stretched. His muscles rippled and flexed and she shook her head in slight wonderment. She didn't know how a body could be so bulky, and still look so normal. He was a huge man, but he didn't appear to be deformed in any way.

She shrugged a little. "What is it you want to know? Where I came from? What I have been doing since I came here?" She didn't really know how to answer his question, she needed something a little more specific. She didn't think he would understand where she came from, anyway. No one else really seemed to.

"I don't know about magic, but what I do know is there is always a way if you just look for it." Which was what he planned to do until he found a way to get back home.He didn't care about taking the throne, but he did want to finish what he started which was fixing the problem. He continued to walk shocked that the other woman was able to keep up so easily and not bitch about being tired.

Chuckling softly,Riddick realized that his explanation probably did nothing to help her or make the curiosity go away considering she was clearly from a different time. But again he wasn't exactly sure how in the hell to explain it so he dropped it.It wasn't like he could take the glasses off considering the sun would blind him right now. He continued to look around.

It would take some getting used to,considering no one here really understood anyone unless they were from the same time.Sadly for him it was impossible to even wish for the one person who understood him. He was not a man many understood not even those of the same species or heritage. And again small talk or even pleasant chit chat was something new to him.

"Ah.I suppose we wouldn't really understand each other's stories, where we come from and what we did before we were here? But I am not very good with small talk." He offered a small apologetic smile as he continued to walk.

Ayla nodded and shrugged, conceding to his stubborn idea that he would somehow find a way off the rock. Ayla kept pace with him easily. She walked most of the time, and hard labor was not foreign to her. She worked physically for everything she did. Her endurance was spectacular. And, even though she might not compare when it came to his strength, she was strong enough for a woman.

She looked at him sideways when he chuckled, but she didn't ask. Figuring he found her amusing in some way. She kept quiet while he spoke, but she found that while he made sense, she had a compelling urge to tell him about herself. She wasn't sure why. Perhaps it was because he was kind, despite his hulking mass that might have told her otherwise.

"I am not very good with small talk, either. Perhaps if I talk and tell you about myself, then you can just listen and we won't have to make small talk." She smiled apprehensively beofre she pressed on and began her story.

"When I was very young, only about this many years," she held out her hand with five fingers sticking straight out, "there was an earthquake. I was separated from my own people and I wandered for a long time. A cave lion attacked me and left these scars on my leg." She pulled her wrap up a little to reveal the four parallel scars on her left thigh. She released her hold on the wrap and continued.

"A woman named Iza found me. I was very sick because the wound had become infected. She treated it, and took me with her and the Clan. She adopted me, even though I wasn't one of them. She cared for me. She was the only mother I ever knew. We lived at Creb's hearth. He was the mog-ur. The holy man of the Clan. They taught me to speak properly, too. Iza was the medicine woman. She taught me to be a medicine woman of her line, even though I didn't have the memories." She looked over to see if he was listening.

"I had to learn quickly. The first time it was taught to me. By the time Iza died, I was the medicine woman of the Clan, and Uba, my sister, Iza's daughter would be medicine woman, too." As she spoke, she moved her hands in a rudimentary sign language. It was the way the Clan communicated, and it was a difficult habit to break, even after learning to speak vocally.

"I had a son while I was living with the Clan. Creb named him Durc after my favorite legend. When Durc was four years old, I had to leave the Clan. Iza told me before she died that I had to leave and find my own people. Broud, he hated me from the first day I was with the clan, he took my son from me and cursed me with death. I had to leave. I walked for a long time until I came to the Valley of Horses. I found a small cave there, set into the side of a cliff. There was a small path up to it. I stayed there for three years." She was talking slowly, but it was a mouthful. She looked over at him again. She wasn't finished, but she didn't know if he wanted to hear anymore, so she paused.

Riddick was a stubborn man and he was determined. he had things to do,things to finish and take care of.Being stuck here was clearly not one of the options he had. Nor was it a thought he liked. But it would take some time to gather the information he needed and Ayla was being very helpful.

He also listened intently as she spoke about herself. You honestly never knew when information would come in handy to be honest. He also found her company some what pleasant which was saying a lot for him.

Riddick raised a brow but said nothing as she spoke of her son and him being taken away. One of his only weaknesses were children. He never understood why but it was a weakness for him. He had this over bearing and overwhelming need to take care of them and protect them. It always struck him as odd that he could easily cut someone 's throat or put a bullet between their eyes but a child being harmed? He could never take.

He also realized how in a way they shared a few things in common. But a lot of things she was telling him puzzled him and sparked a curiosity in him. He kept telling himself it would make things easier somehow if he knew all he could about the people around him.

"Sounds like you had an interesting life before coming here.. Very different yet the same as my own."

When she realized that he was indeed listening and was finding comparisons in their lives, she continued on. "One day, I was riding Whinney, my horse friend, and we heard a cave lion roar and a human scream. I had not heard the sound of another human in three years. We raced toward it and found Baby, a cave lion I had raised from a cub, standing over two men. Men who looked like me."

As he sat on the rock, she continued her story. He was an attentive listener, and she appreciated that she wasn't just filling the empty air with her words. "One of the men was already dead, his neck had been broken. The other had a head wound and a large gash in his leg. I put him on the travois behind Whinney and pulled him back to my cave. I nursed him back to health and he taught me how to speak."

"His name was Jondalar, and I was with him just before I was brought here. We had gone on a small trip before we intended to find more of our people. I have been here for the last ten days." She looked over at him once more. While she had been speaking, she was looking over the land that was now her home.

"Since then, I have done a lot of exploring and I have met a good many people. But none of them are Clan." She took a deep breath as she finished her story. She wanted to know about him, now. "How is your life like mine?" She was curious. He was very interesting, both in the way he looked and the way he talked. Ayla had a bit of a speech impediment. Not that she couldn't speak correctly, but she seemed to swallow some of her words, or clip them. That too, was a result of her life with a people who had very little use for verbal language. They could not speak, and the sounds they could make, were few.
