Opening her eyes, Gwen sat up and very nearly screamed. The last thing she remembered was doing paperwork and noting that her eyes were crossing - she'd been so tired. But, falling asleep on her keyboard was one thing - waking up in a field near a lake was something completely different. Eyes wide, she took a breath, noting that she was alive - she could smell the fresh air around her. She reached over and pinched herself, wincing when she felt pain - she was awake.

"Oh, my God," she moaned, leaping to her feet. She reached into her back pocket for her cell phone, but there was no phone. Reaching for her gun, there was no gun at her hip. "Oh, my god!" Gwen exclaimed, turning around in a panic, looking at the ground around her as she patted herself down, noting that she was wearing jeans and a light sweater - not what she had been wearing at the Hub the night before.

The only thing that she could imagine was that there had been activity with the Rift, and she'd gotten stuck in the middle of it. Turning around again, Gwen noted several large buildings - hotels? Resorts? "What the bloody hell?" she mumbled, heading toward one of the buildings, shaking her head a little. She had to be dreaming, right? She saw someone walking out of the building and she cried out to them. "Hello! Excuse me!" she shouted, running toward them.....

The Doctor nodded slowly as Gwen seemed to figure it all out for herself. He leaned against the welcome stone, looking down at the ground for a few seconds as he tried to figure out what exactly to say. At least the woman knew about Jack's immortality so he didn't really have to worry about that aspect of it all.

"Yeah, it does," he started, forcing himself to look at her again. "I met Jack during World War II, middle of the London Blitz," he said, with a fond smile of recollection. "He saved a friend of mine, then he tried to con us into buying this ambulance. Long story short, he eventually saved everyone's life while being willing to sacrfice his own, but it all worked out okay and he came sort of traveling with us," he went on, just incase the woman didn't know any of it at all.

"We don't exactly live safe lives. Danger loves me. We ended up on this gamestation, there was this sort of Dalek invasion... has he told you about the Daleks?" he asked, scrunching up his nose a little. "They're unstoppable killing machines. We were going to die. I sent Rose... that was my friend, Rose... I sent her home. Jack... he just kept fighting, ran out of bullets and they killed him. He was just trying to buy me time, didn't have the heart to tell him that I was only bluffing. I knew we were dead, but... you can't go out without a fight, eh?" he grinned slightly, looking down at his shoes with a sort of regret before continuing.

"Well, back on Earth, Rose Tyler wasn't going to give up the fight, either. She got this tow-truck and cracked open my ship to make it take her back to us. It's... it's a living thing, and she'd seen before that if you look into its heart it can sort of... see into your soul. She absorbed the entire Time Vortex, it's comparable to become a god. And she came back, stopped the Daleks, brought Jack back to life. But she couldn't control that kind of power, she brought him back for good," he finished at last, looking out toward the desert with a sort of nostalgia.

"That's... a lot of information to take in... in such a short time," she breathed. Gwen knew the drill, she lowered her head between her knees, breathing deeply to keep herself from passing out. "So... you do know what happened to him? OK, so if you met him during World War II... how did you end up fighting these Daleks? Was it on another planet? How did Jack end up back here?" she asked him.

She shook her head, lifting to look up at him again. "You probably don't know. Jack knows how to cover his tracks pretty well, I think. Do you know how we're ending up here?" she tried.

"Well, by the looks of things you'll have a lot of free time to let it sink in," he pointed out, trying to make light of the situation as he always did.

"The gamestation was a spacestation orbiting Earth in the year 200,000. Like I said, I'm a Time Lord, does what it says on the tin," he pointed out.

He shrugged when she asked about Jack's reappearance in Wales. "I don't know. I left him on the gamestation, last time I saw him. He probably teleported, he was a Time Agent after all. Had one of those space-hoppers," he pointed out; other people's methods of time travel weren't all that interesting to the Doctor, and it seemed like a silly question coming from someone who clearly knew Jack.

"No idea. The general consensus is that the planet is a sentient being, and is trying to populate itself by stealing people randomly from time and space. Of course, that is completely against all sort of galactic laws, so eventually it will have to let us go. That sort of energy isn't going to go unnoticed," he told her, spinning round to pick up the key left on the stone and tossing it in her direction. "Until then, you might as well make yourself at home!" he grinned.

Gwen caught the key, nodding a little as she turned it over in her hand. "Thanks," she said, still quite stunned at the entire situation. Gwen lifted her head, looking up at him from where she sat. "I'm sorry I tried to strangle you - you've been nothing but kind to me," she said sincerely. It wasn't often, but Gwen could admit when she was wrong.

"I think I'm just going to... sit here for a bit, jsut take it all in," she told him, looking down at the key in her hand once more.

"Don't worry, I'm used to being greeted in much worse ways than that!" he laughed, only half-joking. people did seem to have a habit of holding him at gun-point instead of offering a warm handshake.

"Yeah, probably best. Well, if you need me, I'm in room C222, just over there," he said, pointing vaguely in the direction of the C block. "I'm not exactly a familiar face, but I can offer stories about younger Jack, and you can use me as a punch bag if it all gets too much!" he grinned. He supposed it was about the best someone could offer at a time like this.

"Well, you take care of yourself, and I'll... catch you at some point," he suggested, reaching out to give her a sort of encouraging pat on the shoulder before heading back off toward the TARDIS, turning to give her a little wave as he went.
