Who: Jack Harkness, Rose Tyler
When: Day 5, Morning
What: Jack meets an old friend
Where: The gardens then the TARDIS
Rating: TBD
Status: Incomplete

Jack felt like a new man when he woke up that morning after his day of luxuriating the previous day. He grinned to himself as he showered and dressed. Not that he meant that literally. He was quite happy with the man he had, he just wished he was here. But he felt refreshed and eager to try and find out a bit more about the resort and the planet.

He decided to start outside, see if there was anything obvious. Strange machinery, suspicious buildings, that sort of thing. He saw other people as he prowled around but he avoided them for the most part. He wasn't interested in being distracted today, at least not until he got frustrated in his search in which case, distraction would be a good thing.

He had decided to leave the barns for last, given how large they were and instead turned his steps towards the gardens. For the most part they looked perfectly normal, even the greenhouses were utterly normal. Then he turned a corner and saw something that made him stop in his tracks.

The TARDIS. For a moment he thought he was seeing things. He took a few steps closer and realised he wasn't. She was really there, sitting in the middle of the gardens.

A grin broke out on Jack's face and he started forward eagerly. The Doctor was here! This was the best news he'd had since he woke up here. If anyone could get them out, it was the Doctor. He strode up to the doors of the TARDIS and his grin became rather rueful as he knocked on the doors.

"Doctor?" he called, hoping the Time Lord could hear him.

Jack closed his eyes for a moment. "I hope that no time has passed. I really do." It was the best case scenario and it wouldn't be the first time that he'd held memories of a time and a place and events that no longer existed. At least these memories wouldn't be as bad as the last lot. He still had nightmares about them.

"It has it's moments," he said ruefully. "It's a lot more active than the Doctor thought that day we stopped there to refuel. It's been spitting things out for a hell of a long time. Torchwood has been cleaning up and covering up what comes out of the rift for decades." He chuckled. "You know I had to come up with a reason to get the team out of Cardiff the day we were there. I spent days beforehand setting up an elaborate charade out in the countryside to make sure we were busy the whole day. I couldn't let my timelines coincide after all and there would have been no way of avoiding it given where the TARDIS was and where the Hub is."

"So do I," Rose agreed, biting her lower lip as she watched him close his eyes. "I- my phone doesn't work, and I'm sure mum will be worried sick by the time we get back, if time is passing normally. You- well, no, I don't think you ever met her, did you? But she likes me to call."

"Is it?" She smiled, faintly. "What kind of charade?" Hey, if anything, it might get a story? That would take up some time, or something. And besides, she was interested to hear about what Jack had been up to.

Jack hesitated and chuckled. "I never met her but I... went back to your estate when you were growing up. Just a couple of times and I never approached. Timelines and all that. I just... had to see you again even if you couldn't see me or didn't know who I was."

He leaned back and laughed. "Oh, I dug a piece of alien tech out of the archives and put it in the middle of a forest in the middle of nowhere in Wales. But on the detectors it would look dangerous. And it could move." He grinned. "Gave us a merry dance. Took half the night to catch it then I made them search the entire area to ostensibly make sure there wasn't another one lying dormant or anything like that. By the time we finished, I knew we were long gone. I did have to put up with a lot of whining from the team though."

"I- you did?" Rose sobered and blinked, a little surprised. "Really?" She almost kicked herself for actually asking it, but she couldn't help it. She couldn't quite believe- well, yeah, she could. "I had no idea..."

"Oh, nice," she said with a laugh. "How long did it take them to find it? I wish I could have seen that."

Jack smiled ruefully. "You weren't meant know." He laughed. "I was so tempted to go back to London in 1941, just to watch us meet again but..." He shook his head and grimaced, remembering what that had involved and his won stupid arrogance that he'd been blameless until the Doctor had all but rubbed his face in it. "Thankfully I was... unavailable at that time. I don't know that I would have been able to stop myself from interfering."

"Most of the day," he said, his grin returning. "Owen was particularly put out. He never was overly fond of the countryside."

"Weren't meant to- why shouldn't I know?" she asked, frowning. And then her frown deepened and she sat up a little. "Did the Doctor know? If he did, then why- how could- why were you left behind?"

"I-I'm glad you pulled it off, though. I mean, it would have been...interesting to see you, but I suppose it's good that you didn't."

"Timelines," Jack said simply. "I was a Time Agent and I knew the worst thing I could do was mess up the pre-existing time lines. You couldn't meet me before... well, before you actually met me since we both know that at that meeting, you didn't know me." He rolled his eyes and laughed. "I love talking about time paradoxes. The tenses get so confusing." He shook his head. "Anyway, that's also why I had to get out of Cardiff that day. I couldn't meet myself... although that would be kind of fun. Paradox inducing but fun."

He sighed. "And to be honest, that wasn't the Doctor I... needed to meet either." He paused and stared down at his shoes for a moment as he considered the question he'd been loathe to answer. Finally he sighed. "The Doctor knew. He knew I was alive, he knew what had happened to me and he left me because... well, he ran away from me basically. To a Time Lord, I'm... wrong."

Rose did her best to follow his rambling about timelines. She had gotten better over time with the whole concept of time paradoxes, though following the tenses often confused her. "I don't think I could imagine two of you. It'd certainly be interesting."

"Wrong? Jack, how could- oh. The whole death thing?" She was quiet again. "So he knew, and he never told me. What- did he just expect you to stay there?"

Jack laughed, remembering what the Doctor had said about that. "The Doctor thought I'd be the only person I'd be likely to stay with. Which was funny and not a bad dig, I'll admit. But wrong."

He sobered and sighed. "I'm a fixed point in time and he's a Time Lord. You can see the problem he has." he leaned forward and rested his elbows on his knees, staring down at the ground. "I think he didn't tell you because he didn't want you feeling guilty. When you brought me back, you brought me back for good. It's not your fault. The Doctor said you didn't have any control over the power you had and I'm hardly going to fault you for not wanting me dead." He gave a small grin. "I didn't particuarly want to die."

"As for what he wanted me to do?" Jack shrugged. "I don't know. Maybe help the people on Earth but he... forgot or didn't realise that I didn't know what had happened. All I knew was that I'd died, then I was alive and you were both gone. I wanted to know what happened. That was more important to me at the time."

Rose nodded, biting her lower lip. "I didn't- I thought...I don't know what I thought. I don't think I even knew what I was doing." She was quiet again. "I wonder what- no. I shouldn't think about that. What's important is that you're here, right? And- I mean, yeah, it had to have been hard, but...you're here and we're together- the three of us?" She moved from her chair to lean over, wrapping her arms around him in another hug.
