Who: Jack Harkness, Rose Tyler
When: Day 5, Morning
What: Jack meets an old friend
Where: The gardens then the TARDIS
Rating: TBD
Status: Incomplete

Jack felt like a new man when he woke up that morning after his day of luxuriating the previous day. He grinned to himself as he showered and dressed. Not that he meant that literally. He was quite happy with the man he had, he just wished he was here. But he felt refreshed and eager to try and find out a bit more about the resort and the planet.

He decided to start outside, see if there was anything obvious. Strange machinery, suspicious buildings, that sort of thing. He saw other people as he prowled around but he avoided them for the most part. He wasn't interested in being distracted today, at least not until he got frustrated in his search in which case, distraction would be a good thing.

He had decided to leave the barns for last, given how large they were and instead turned his steps towards the gardens. For the most part they looked perfectly normal, even the greenhouses were utterly normal. Then he turned a corner and saw something that made him stop in his tracks.

The TARDIS. For a moment he thought he was seeing things. He took a few steps closer and realised he wasn't. She was really there, sitting in the middle of the gardens.

A grin broke out on Jack's face and he started forward eagerly. The Doctor was here! This was the best news he'd had since he woke up here. If anyone could get them out, it was the Doctor. He strode up to the doors of the TARDIS and his grin became rather rueful as he knocked on the doors.

"Doctor?" he called, hoping the Time Lord could hear him.

Rose was happy to have him return the hug, and she even returned the kiss. One practically had to expect such a greeting from Jack, after all. She wondered how he got here, but then- well, that could wait for a bit.

"I lost him," she replied with as much of a straight face as she could keep, and then she burst into laughter, reaching for his hands to tug him inside with her, letting the door swing shut behind them. "No, he wandered off, I think. He's here, somewhere, but I'm not sure just yet. He'll come back, if we hang around here long enough."

Jack laughed at her comment and let her pull him inside the TARDIS. The moment he stepped inside he could hear at an almost subliminal level the TARDIS' disgruntled rumbling. He freed one had and patted her sympathetically, remembering how she'd reacted to him last time.

"Sorry, old girl," he murmured soothingly. The TARDIS had always liked him last time he'd travelled with the Doctor, which had made the Doctor roll his eyes and mutter a bit on occasion. "It's still me, you know. I haven't changed all that much. Still your Jack."

He listened hard and almost thought he'd caught a hint of a fond greeting in amongst the discomfort. He patted her again with a rueful look. If the Doctor was from a previous point in the timeline, his reaction probably wasn't going to be much better. At least this time, Jack would be prepared for the Doctor's reaction. It had hurt last time.

He pulled himself back to Rose and grinned at her. "Can a Time Lord get lost in his own TARDIS?"

"You know, I wouldn't be surprised if he did. You've seen the wardrobe he's got, haven't you?" Rose wasn't entirely sure that the Doctor was in the TARDIS, but then there were still bits of it that she hadn't gotten around to exploring.

She watched as Jack spoke to the TARDIS, smiling as she felt the slight change in the air. "I think she's missed you," she said, reaching for his hand as he moved back to her side. "So how long have you been here? Well- I'd imagine we have a lot to catch up on- do you want to find some place to sit or something?"

"Oh yeah," Jack said with a laugh. "I love that wardrobe." He'd raided it more than once when he'd been staying on the TARDIS. Despite his current penchant for wearing his RAF coat, he'd dressed more casually back then.

"Yeah, a little. I think we've just got a couple of little things we need to sort out," he said with half a smile. He smiled down at Rose when she took his hand. He missed this, missed being in the TARDIS with Rose and the Doctor. He didn't regret his decision to return to his team after the Master was defeated but he might have spent a little more time wrestling with it if Rose had still been there, purely because of the history he had with her.

"A couple of days," he said with a grimace. "It's a strange place. Nice, luxurious but strange." He laughed ruefully and nodded. "I guess we do and think finding some place to sit would be a good idea. I know my story is kind of a long one."

"It's brilliant, isn't it? I've gotten lost in there, myself- and I can't help but wonder how he's managed to collect so mu- nevermind." She realized then that it was probably a foolish thing to say; after all of his travels and everything, he was bound to pick up a few things along the way.

"It's a very strange place. The TARDIS won't move; we can't get enough of a response out of her to leave. It's like something is holding her down." The whole thing left Rose feeling a little unsettled, but she just gave Jack's hand a light squeeze.

"Where would you like to go? We could hang out in one of the back rooms, or go find something on the grounds? Whatever you'd like- I'm sure the Doctor will find us when he's ready to."

"I just wonder how much of it is his and how much belongs to other people have travelled with him," Jack said, remembering a few of the things he'd found in there. "You know there's full Scottish Highland dress in there, kilt, sporran and all? It was a bit too small for the Doctor so it couldn't have been his."

He gave Rose and surprised look. "The TARDIS can't leave? Damn, I was hoping she'd been immune to whatever it is that brought us here." He squeezed and wrapped his arm around her shoulders. "The Doctor will figure something out. He always does." That was said with as much hope as certainty and he just hoped it wouldn't take a year for the Doctor's plans to work this time.

"Let's go into one of the back rooms," he said, looking towards the door that led further into the TARDIS. "I haven't been here for so long. I've missed this place."

"Is there?" she asked, laughing. "I don't think I've seen that one. I did find the pink feather boa, once. And a dress that looked like it could fit him."

She sobered and slipped her arm around his waist as his arm went around her shoulders. "We were hoping so, too. We're still working on her- maybe one day we'll figure it out and manage to get us out of here. And you know how the Doctor doesn't like to settle down."

"Sounds good," she added, starting toward the back. "Your room is still like you left it. Would you like to go see it?"

"Oh yeah," Jack said with a laugh. "The Doctor in a dress. Now that would be something worth seeing."

He nodded. "Yeah, he's going to get pretty worked up if we really are stuck here. Mind you, I want to get back home too. As much as I like it here, I have responsibilities."

He walked with Rose and gave her a startled look. "It is? Yeah, I'd love to. My room in the resort looks like what I remember my room here being like but... it's not quite the same, you know. It's missing that... hum in the back of your mind and there's things I left here that the report couldn't reproduce."

"That's exactly what our room is. Well. An imitation TARDIS- we've the green glow and that faint hum, but it just doesn't feel the same." She smiled as she started down the corridor toward his room. "And we do. I didn't have the heart to go in and box any of your stuff up."

It didn't take them long to reach his door, and she paused just outside of it. "You do the honors, Jack. It's your room, after all."

"Yeah," Jack said with feeling. As much as he liked his room in the report, it was unnerving at times. "I was a bit surprised to see it that way. Though on the whole I prefer that to what it could have been."

Though now that he thought about it, his room at the Hub would hardly have been appropriate for a resort. It was pretty spare and spartan but then he didn't sleep a lot these days so he'd never really cared.

He paused outside the door to his room then opened it and stepped inside. It really was exactly how he'd left it from the large unmade bed to the open wardrobe to the RAF cap sitting on the desk next to his sonic blaster. He smiled to himself as he walked around, letting his fingers trail over the furniture. This is what the resort had been aiming for but had not quite gotten right.

He pulled off his coat and hung it on the coat rack that stood next to the wardrobe then wandered over to the chairs and table in the corner closest to the door, settling down in one of the chairs and stretching his legs out in front of him. He grinned at Rose and waved at the other chair.

"Have a seat." He looked around the room, feeling himself relax a little more. "I really missed this place."

Rose let him step in first, then leaned against the door frame as he walked around. She hugged her arms around herself, lips curving into a faint smile. He looked like he belonged here- it was good to have him back.

She stepped inside as he pulled off his coat, then moved to the chair he'd mentioned, sitting down and pulling her feet up under her. "We've all missed you, too. I know I have, at least."

She tilted her head slightly as she looked back to him, not quite sure where to even begin; there was so much to catch up on. "How did you get out? I thought- I didn't even know you were still alive..."

"I've missed both of you," he said honestly. He had; he still missed the Doctor even though it had been his choice to stay instead of keep travelling with him.

He sighed and tilted his head back when Rose asked the inevitable question. Obviously the Doctor had never told her that he knew that Jack was still alive. Part of him could understand that even if he didn't like it.

"I... did die," he said after a moment's hesitation. "I mean I figured I would, figured it was only ever going to be a holding action. But I just hoped I'd give the Doctor enough time to finish what he was doing. Eventually though it got down to just me and the Daleks and you can imagine how well that went. They exterminated me." He looked down at his boots as he tried to work out how much to tell Rose. "Then... then I woke up again. I heard the sound of the TARDIS leaving but I couldn't get there in time."

He raised his arm and tapped the leather wrist band he always wore, hoping that Rose wouldn't notice that he'd glossed over a few things. "This thing has a vortex manipulator. All Time Agents have them. I was able to use it to get off the Gamestation. I was looking for the Doctor and you and I figured the 21st century was the place to go. I aimed for Cardiff and the rift since I knew the Doctor would come back to refuel." He laughed ruefully. "Unfortunately I kind of missed. I made it to Cardiff but in 1869, not the 21st century. So I had to wait, which is sort of what I've been doing."

Rose listened carefully, biting her lower lip and nodding. She knew what had happened that day- from her end, at least- though parts of it were a bit fuzzy. She knew what she had done, for the most part, but the extent of what she had done was still a bit shady. "If I had known, Jack...I would have waited for you."

She looked to the wrist band, tilting her head. "Sort of? And..Well, what year was it when you were pulled here?"

Jack hesitated, trying to decide how to answer. He already knew that the Doctor had known and had run away from him... because he was wrong. That still hurt even now. He understood intellectually but... his emotions were involved here. He loved the Doctor, just as he loved Rose, and he'd never reacted overly logically to being hurt by those he loved.

"I know," he said with a small smile.

The smile slowly modulated into a grin. "Well, I've kept busy. I'd get bored otherwise and you know a bored Jack is a very dangerous thing." He gave her a wicked look then sobered a little. "Uh, it was 2008 actually."

Rose nodded, wanting to move over and hug him closely, but she remained in her seat. She couldn't help but smile as he did- his smile was absolutely infectious. "It really is. But never fear! We'll try to keep you as entertained here as we possibly can." She shifted in her seat. "2008? We just came from the 2012 Olympics. The Doctor carried the torch right into the stadium."

Jack grinned. "I haven't explored even half of this place yet so I can't see myself getting bored too soon." He grimaced. "Though I'll admit I really want to get back to my team. I promised them I wouldn't run off again... well, I promised Ianto I wouldn't do that and I actually meant it."

He laughed at Rose's revelation. "I'll remember that and keep an eye out for him if we ever get out of here. Though knowing my luck the rift will decide that's the day it wants to get cranky again. It always picks the worst possible time." The number of times he and Ianto had been interrupted was starting to reach the annoying levels and it was threatening to make him paranoid.
