Who: Dean & Sam Winchester
What: Brotherly chat
Where: Sam's room
When: Early morning
Rating: PG?
Status: Complete

Dean stood outside in the hall, just in front of Sam's door. He had his fist raised to knock on the door but he was trying to decide whether or not this was the best time to get to a few of the things he needed to get off his chest with Sam. Things had been said in messages and before, when they'd talked just the two of them, that he wanted cleared up and/or off his conscience. Still, it was very early. Just about daybreak he figured. But what did it matter if he slept at night or during the day since this place was never letting them go or letting them do anything but wander around and talk all day.

Deciding now was as good a time as any, Dean pounded on Sam's door and then stood back, waiting for his brother to answer. "Sammy! Open up."

"Sam!" Dean had his fist raised, about to pound the door again when Sam opened it. He stopped himself before he punched Sam in the nose while trying to knock. "Oh, hi. Can I come in?" he asked, avoiding Sam's eyes because his own were full of amusement.

In truth he wasn't quite sure why he was there. He'd woken up with the sudden urge to see Sam and have a talk. He'd tried to go back to sleep but he woke up a few minutes later with the same need. So up he'd gotten and here he was.

"I need to get the low down on a few things before too much time passes. Got a minute?"

Sam rolled his eyes in exasperation. "Couldn't you have picked a later time?" Oh well. Chances are he wouldn't be able to fall back asleep. He waved Dean in, walking over to his bed and picking up the covers, straightening them out over the mattress. "Low down on what?"

Dean sauntered in and wandered around Sam's room in a vague, sort of nosy way, taking everything in without saying anything at first.

"Uh, well, Martha Stewart," he began as Sam straightened his covers. "What's the deal with Andy? He said he convinced me to give him my car?"

Sam gave Dean another glare. So what if he liked to keep his own room more or less neat. He hadn't had one to keep clean for awhile. "You mean when we first met him?" He turned around and sat down on top of the covers, still wearing his pajamas, a pair of sweatpants and a t-shirt.

"Yeah, dude. He's been telling me a lot about it and it sounds like I was on drugs or something at the time. Two dorks got the drop on me? What's that about? What's wrong with me in the future that I'd give my girl away to a stranger?"

Dean eyed Sam and this time his face was sober. No trace of amusement because as much as he'd like to not admit it, that whole story had bothered him. A lot.

Sam picked up on Dean's seriousness. "What did he tell you?" He wasn't sure what he meant when he said he'd given away his girl... Was he talking about Cassie?

His girl was his car and so Dean wasn't understanding why Sam hadn't just answered the question but maybe he'd given up calling the Impala that by the time he and Sam had picked up like long lost orphans. He decided to ignore that incongruity and just move on.

"He said some jerk named Webber brainwashed me or something with his mind. Is he full of crap or am I that much of a girl in the future? I need to change that now, Sam, if that's the case."

"He didn't brain wash you. Webber was and Andy is psychic like me, but they have mind control, pretty much. Webber was a lot better at using it than Andy. He made people kill themselves just by telling them too. It's not that you were... you know, weak or anything," Sam tried to reassure. "He was just really good at controlling it."

"So the future is entirely populated with psychics. Some of them are like you and some of them are complete psychotic bastards? And I'm the only dude who showed up at the party without a present?"

That was not fun news. This future was one where he was completely out of his own control and at the mercy of others to save his ass. Not fun. It was ridiculous.

"I'd rather stay here on this damn planet than live through that."

"I've only met..." Sam did quick math in his head. "Six, including Andy and Webber, and I only knew about seven of them. Eight, maybe," he added on, thinking about Rosie and her parents. "There's not a lot... and a lot of them are probably dead by now," Sam said after he remembered that Ava had been killing all the ones who had been brought to Cold Oaks for some time. "And yeah, some of them were pretty crazy... which is why I keep telling you... you know... but the majority of them were more or less sane." He didn't want to start up the argument about what might happen if he, as he'd taken to thinking about it, went dark side.

Dean knew he sounded a bit hysterical but his brain was on overload. "Only six. That you've actually met. Which means there are probably a lot more. I don't know, man. I don't know. It seems like this whole psychic thing is something that we need to get ourselves completely set up to handle when it hits. I think Dad spent a lot of time preparing us for some sort of supernatural apocalypse but it's going to really be a rise of psychics. You're probably the only one who can stop them too, Sam!"

"Whoa, okay, dude, you need to calm down." If Dean was starting to freak out about this psychic thing, then Sam was going to as well and he really didn't want that to happen. "I only met them because either I went looking for them or was taken to the same place they were taken to. I didn't just run across them. And like I said, a lot have been killed off already." Sam remembered that the demon had told him he'd only needed one soldier to lead his army... He didn't think the psychics were what they had to worry about, when and if they got back. "I don't think I could stop them anyway. I just get visions. The ones I met had mind control, telekinesis, super strength, and one could even kill people just by touching them. But... they're people. I think we need to worry about the things that aren't."

"Sam, people with powers are far more dangerous than demons. They're unpredictable and they have more than a couple million possible reasons for doing the evil they do. Demons are far easier to deal with than people even if they are harder to kill. I don't know, man, I don't know."

Dean was pacing now and touching things around Sam's room. He was agitated and he knew it was stupid to be in here riling up Sam when they'd already argued about this before.

"Ok, look. I'm sorry. It's just a lot to have on my plate right now."

Sam rubbed his forehead with a sigh. All this talk was giving him a headache. "I don't know what to tell you, Dean. There's no use worrying about it while we're stuck here anyway. Not much we can do. Not much we can do even if we were back home. Just... take it easy. We just have to play it by ear and hope the world doesn't end. We're not the only hunters. If something big and bad started happening, I'm sure we wouldn't be the only ones who would be trying to do something to stop it." And hopefully we wouldn't be doing anything to cause it to happen, he thought grimly but kept that to himself.

Dean wasn't really prepared to explain the real reason he was here. It had suddenly occurred to him why all of this was bugging him so badly and he didn't like it one bit that it would ever cross his mind. But there it was and he was even more agitated.

"Alright, Sammy. You're right. There's nothing I er we can do about it here. We're stuck for who knows how long. I'm just sick of having nothing real to do. Nothing happens. I've been hunting and fighting my whole life. I feel completely effing useless right now!"

He frowned and glanced at his brother. "You ok?"

Sam laughed lightly. "Dude, I know exactly how you feel. I was starting to go crazy here, not knowing anyone and having nothing to hunt... I thought that, you know, when the whole demon thing was over, I'd be able to just walk away, go back to college, finish school... Now that I've been away, I..." he trailed off with a shrug. "Everything's so... normal here. It's not bad and I didn't enjoy hunting all the time either but... I dunno, I guess I was almost getting used to it, as freaky as that sounds."

Sam leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees as he rubbed his temples. "Yeah, fine, just all this talk is giving me a headache."

"When the whole demon thing was over? You thought it would end at some point and you could just live a normal life? Dad clearly didn't spend enough time giving you the details of his life if you think it might be all over one day." Dean brushed a hand through his hair and continued to pace though his agitation was waning down now.

With as much calm as he could muster, Dean asked with a distinctly Arnold Schwarzenegger tone, "Is it a tumor?" He chuckled and then stopped pacing in front of Sam. "Sorry. I'll head out now, bro."

Sam would have laughed at Dean's Schwarzenegger impression if not for the sharp pain that suddenly ripped through his head. Sam pressed his face into his hands, hissing in pain as a vision started to come on.

No, Sam thought desperately. No, no, no, please don't let someone die here, he begged whoever would listen. He hated these damn visions. Why couldn't he have gotten some ability that didn't involve his head feeling like it was about the crack open any second because someone felt like they had a jackhammer pressed against his brain?

Sam curled up slightly, falling off the bed and onto his knees, clutching his head while half hissing, half gasping as he saw...

A kitchen. It looked like a big kitchen, like the kind in a restaurant. Okay, normal. The fucked up part was that there were lizard people. Not demons, not monsters, lizards. What the hell? They were tossing food and silverware around too. He watched as one stabbed, accidentally it seemed, another and the lizard shrieked in pain.

Then it was over and Sam found himself on the floor, taking in deep breaths as his head throbbed. He was... surprised. Sam hadn't seen anyone die. But what the hell did it mean? Now that he could actually think, something clicked. The kitchen... They looked familiar. On his first few days, Sam had done some exploring and he was pretty sure that the kitchen was the one on Mirage. Was the resort going to be attacked?

His brother was suddenly not part of the conversation anymore and Dean's eyes widened. This was the second time someone he'd been around started to have a seizure right in front of him. For a split second he almost ran to get some milk because it had been the cure the last time. He doubted this was the same thing though. Instead he was at Sam's side in an instant, kneeling beside his brother but not touching him.

"Sam! What's going on? What do you need, bro?"

He'd only been joking about the tumor but now he was worried he hadn't been too far off track with that. Maybe this psychic thing was a cancer and not an ability. That would explain why Sam though it had entered him through demon's blood.

Dean pounded a fist on the bed in frustration. There wasn't anything he could do and being rendered helpless was his least favorite thing in the world.

"I'm fine, I'm fine," Sam reassured, waving Dean away with a hand, rubbing his head as he took in a deep breath then let it out. "I just had a vision. That's just what they're like for me." He gave his brother a weak grin as he straightened himself, leaning against the bed. "Usually they're of people dying though. I just saw some lizard things in a kitchen. I think it was the one here on Mirage but I could be wrong..."

"Oh, oh! You big jerk! You hacked my journal and you know about my lunch date with Shannon. You're paying me back for waking you up, aren't you?"

Lizards in the kitchen. That had to be the silliest thing he'd heard in a long time. Dean laughed and shook his head.

"Well I'm glad your psychic powers can be used for your own personal gain. I should hurt you!"

Sam gave Dean a 'what the fuck are you talking about?' look. "Who's Shannon? I have no idea what you're talking about, dude. You have a date?" Sam rolled his eyes slightly, getting to his feet and sitting back down on the bed, the heel of his hand pressed against his forehead. "I really shouldn't be surprised about that."

Dean did a double take at his brother. Was it possible he wasn't pulling Dean's leg? Yeah right. But then he didn't know Sam as much as he thought he did. It had just been easy to fall into a rhythm with Sam.

Sighing, Dean said, "I've had a few since I got here, Sam. Not always something I start out going after but it usually comes my way. Why haven't you had any? Not like there's anything else to do."

Sam studied Dean for a moment, wondering why he had just brushed him off like his vision wasn't a problem when this Dean had never been around when any of them had happened before. "Do you think I'm crazy?" he asked, slightly suspicious. "I've got more important things to worry about then trying to get a date with a girl, Dean."

"You want to know what I think about it? I came in here telling you what I think about it. It scares the livin shit out of me, Sam." Which is exactly why he had brushed it off. He wasn't really able to deal with it at this point. His mind wanted to just gloss over this stuff and ignore it because it didn't matter here on Mirage.

He wanted to just settle in and have lunch with Shannon and not have to worry that the world was ending soon. Or whatever the lizards meant. He sighed again and shook his head.

"No, Sammy. I don't think you're crazy."

"Well, that makes the two of us then," Sam admitted. "If you have a lunch date, I really would make it a rain check. If this is going to happen, you probably don't want to be in the middle of one when and or if these things come."

"Oh come on. Really? You think a few lizards are going to keep me from meeting a girl for lunch?" Dean chuckled and ran a hand up the back of his hair, shaking his head. "Sam, Sam, Sam. I keep getting the idea that I'm a huge wuss in the future. What happened to me?"

"You are not a huge wuss, and I didn't see just a few lizards!" Sam protested. "Seriously, Dean, be careful today. I can't stop you but just... be careful." Sam had no idea that there would be way more lizards than he thought. He'd only seen about 7 in his vision.

"Yeah yeah. I promise." Dean rolled his eyes. "Alright, go back to sleep, Sam. I'm going back to my room for a little quality time with the Girls Next Door."

Dean moved to the door and as he was about to walk out into the hallway he looked back at his brother. "Thanks, Sam. It's good to know I'm not a huge wuss. It would really hurt my ego."

Sam rolled his eyes as Dean headed out. "You were never a wuss," he murmured quietly to himself, setting about to get some clothes and take a shower since he didn't think he'd be able to go back to sleep after that. He wanted to check this out, make sure that nothing bad was going to happen.
