[You never knew the water could be so still.

It’s been days and while the water has stopped rising, it hasn’t gone away, either. Most days, it’s eerie in its stillness, almost looking calm— but there’s no denying the strength of the riptides beneath, the way one wrong move and you could be dragged out into the sea. The water is so clear, it looks both fathomless and shallow, looking at the world down below and maybe able to recognize what the island is supposed to look like.

Still, the treehouses have been holding up, the trees strong and sturdy. Since the storm has cleared, the weather has been clear. But it’s almost too calm, isn’t it? It’s been like this before— where everything seems peaceful, just before something bad happens.

The water is still full of those colorful fish, and have likely been your main source of food now that the supplies are threatening to run low. But something seems different today— the fish are scarcer, as if they’re hiding, as if they’re running away.

Soon, the reason is clear. From the depths of the still water, the monsters are rising. Looking almost shark-like, these creatures want only one thing: blood. And the little fish aren’t big enough to satisfy them. They attack without mercy, seem to seek you out, almost. In fact, if you sit too close to the edge of your treehouse, you’re in danger. They weren’t design to withstand attack, after all. These creatures range in size, but are frenzied, desperate for food— and there’s nothing more dangerous than a desperate monster.

Even if you manage to avoid their attacks, be careful of their bite. Powerful and deadly, these bites seep out venom, invite infection and illness, can leave you fevered or hallucinating. Ah, if only there was some medicine to help… maybe you can wait it out? Or maybe you’ll brave the waters to find something to help your suffering friends?

Regardless of your choice, be careful out there… the water can be dangerous, after all.]

[... Manages to nod, slowly settling down again. He accepts those words from the way Shiro speaks, how he assures him, even as Keith's eyes shift across the room uncertainly. He still sees it, fire that seems to crawl up the walls even though it isn't really there, turning into other shapes rather than burning--nothing that makes sense. After a few shaky breaths to regain some control of himself, his eyes lift back up to him. Almost helplessly, out of it as he is, he breathes out a raspy laugh.]

Had to try? [That's how it felt, ha. More serious, quieter, he goes on.] I trust you. I trust you, Shiro.

I don't know why I'm... [Even a strong fever wouldn't hit this strongly, would it?]

[Watches the way his eyes skitter around and gets even more concerned, honestly. ffff. He brushes his thumb along his cheek then runs his fingers through his hair, trying to soothe and comfort him, or at least distract him so he'll focus, grounded by touch rather than whatever he's seeing.]

I'm sorry, Keith. I should have-- I should have cleaned your wound before closing it up. Or-- or found you medicine. Or... [anything. because obviously this is his fault.]

I promise, whatever you're seeing isn't real. Just focus on me, okay?

No. It's not... It's not your fault. [More than anything, he says this with conviction he shouldn't have the energy for. Who knows where Keith manages to get it from even at a time like this, but he means it so thoroughly. You're already doing so much for him, never mind having to take the blame for anything else.]

Shiro. [For a moment he tries to breath, half closes his eyes to just lean into the touch, to let it center him as much as possible. He focuses on just him as Shiro said to. The walls around them could come down in his hazy mind for all that Keith cares just then.] This- it helps.

[The conviction surprises him if only for a moment because he doesn't know where it comes from-- but then his expression softens, because, well, he shouldn't be surprised he'd insist on this. Of course he would. He smiles at him gently for a moment, rubbing a small circle with his thumb over his temple.]

Good. [He's glad for that much, at least... :(] It's just you and me, Keith. Nothing else. I won't let anything happen to us.

[Whatever threatens to swirl into his vision, around himself or Shiro, around them both - he forces himself to push past it, to ignore it. He looks into Shiro's eyes and listens to his voice. [Leans his forehead up in turn, like it's just habit at that contact as much as anything else at this point, a comfort that he can't hold back from. Compared to his own, Shiro's forehead feels cool at the brief moment when they first brush together. Soon, the warmth just seems to settle over them both.]

Yeah. [He must feel the concern roll off Shiro regardless, enough to affirm too, for both their sakes.] Yeah- it will be.

[The logical thing is probably a lot of other things, like rest or medicine, whatever else it is that people do when they're sick, but perhaps the rational part of him always goes out the window when it comes to Shiro. Now, even more so. For a little longer...] This'll pass soon.

[It has to. He can't stand worrying Shiro like this.]

[But-- ... Now is not the time to start overthinking that. He makes a soft sound in response, one hand moving to cup his cheek again, his touch gentle. His expression softens again when Keith closes his eyes, just watching him carefully for a moment. He brushes his thumb lightly along his cheekbone, smiling a little-- tentative, almost shy.]

I'm here. I'm not going anywhere. [He'll say it as many times as he needs to; if you always need him, then he's always going to be here.]

Mmm.

[The answering hum is a little shaky, but it's clear that the relief helps, some of the tension leaving his shoulders, much as he still looks flushed from the fever - staying just like that as long as he can manage. His head starts to loll back after a while, consciousness starting to leave him again in spurts, like he's fading in and out despite his own stubborn efforts not to.]

[It nearly doesn't work, with a couple of false starts where he almost wakes back up, like he's going to jump up and fight something, not quite a nightmare but maybe close to it.

Instead the brief flutter whenever his eyes open meet Shiro's steady gaze and after what seems to take forever, he finally drops off again, saying his name quietly at least once more before sleep (or sickness, whichever you want to call it) claims him again.]

[He stays close, not wanting to draw away too quickly-- especially after the false starts make him not eager at all to move too far away from him. Eventually, though, he breathes out a small sigh and pulls back from Keith, stretching out soar muscles and making sure that Keith's in a comfortable position.]

[He'll take the opportunity to get some fresh water for Keith, and wet a cloth he can place on his forehead. Ideally, he'd like ice for his leg, but that's not really an option right now, so he settles for this to try to help him cool down and not feel so feverish and uncomfortable.]

[He doesn't sleep all that restfully but at least it's not as fussy as before, mostly responding well to Shiro's efforts to bring his temperature down.

At some point during this, the wolf will also return with the usual magical pop nearby, carrying a few supplies he seems to have bummed off from other tents, not much simply by nature of how little there is to go around in the first place, but it's something. If he whines softly in Keith's direction upon returning, well, that's like-minded company, huh?]

[He was gone long enough that Shiro was feeling sorry for the poor thing, figuring he wasn't coming back until he found something (and fearing he wouldn't find anything at all). The fact that he does manage to bring stuff is a huge relief, small as the supplies are.]

Hey... [Pets him gently.] He's going to be alright. Especially thanks to you.

[He's taking up some of the supplies to properly bandage Keith's leg up, careful not to disturb him as he folds the blanket up over one leg (keeping the rest of him covered because god he hasn't forgotten ur naked under there okay) and works at cleaning it up and bandaging it properly, frowning at the mark he's left from his hand.]

[(Also that you were the one that got him naked, very important fax! Anyway.) Keith is out of it enough again that he won't wake from that, especially with how careful Shiro is-- his leg isn't the best sight but certainly looks better than the mess the shark monster nearly left it in without Shiro's quick action. At least that's what he'd remind him of if he could see that expression, but well.

He'll continue to sleep a little while longer like that, but not as much as the first time - when he opens his eyes next, it's slow but less hazy, the fever not yet broken (it's why he can't keep sleeping as much as why he passed out in the first place, funny enough), but he looks more himself.]

He remembers.........] [Notices when he starts to stir and is quick to move back to his side, reaching out to take the cloth off his forehead and dip it in the water to make it cool again, reaching out his free hand to touch his cheek gently.] Hey... 	[There's a tiny frown set in his brow that relaxes at the touch on his cheek, his gaze softening as he watches Shiro.
