open 🌸 all week
[You never knew the water could be so still.

It’s been days and while the water has stopped rising, it hasn’t gone away, either. Most days, it’s eerie in its stillness, almost looking calm— but there’s no denying the strength of the riptides beneath, the way one wrong move and you could be dragged out into the sea. The water is so clear, it looks both fathomless and shallow, looking at the world down below and maybe able to recognize what the island is supposed to look like.

Still, the treehouses have been holding up, the trees strong and sturdy. Since the storm has cleared, the weather has been clear. But it’s almost too calm, isn’t it? It’s been like this before— where everything seems peaceful, just before something bad happens.

The water is still full of those colorful fish, and have likely been your main source of food now that the supplies are threatening to run low. But something seems different today— the fish are scarcer, as if they’re hiding, as if they’re running away.

Soon, the reason is clear. From the depths of the still water, the monsters are rising. Looking almost shark-like, these creatures want only one thing: blood. And the little fish aren’t big enough to satisfy them. They attack without mercy, seem to seek you out, almost. In fact, if you sit too close to the edge of your treehouse, you’re in danger. They weren’t design to withstand attack, after all. These creatures range in size, but are frenzied, desperate for food— and there’s nothing more dangerous than a desperate monster.

Even if you manage to avoid their attacks, be careful of their bite. Powerful and deadly, these bites seep out venom, invite infection and illness, can leave you fevered or hallucinating. Ah, if only there was some medicine to help… maybe you can wait it out? Or maybe you’ll brave the waters to find something to help your suffering friends?

Regardless of your choice, be careful out there… the water can be dangerous, after all.]

No. It doesn't.

[His voice is quiet, hand lingering in the water without moving at first, before he tries to splash at it a little, for some sort of break to the stagnant feeling - anything. In the back of his mind, something starts to insist, very quietly, but building. Don't get so close.]

[Watches him do that for a moment, each little splash making a small coil of dread twist up inside his stomach, although he isn't sure why. Suddenly, that feeling feel suffocating.]

Keith... [He's reaching out and touching at his wrist, his touch gentle but insistent.] Wait.

[Because while Keith's splashing sends those ripples out, Shiro can't help but notice, after a moment, that there are also some ripples returning-- faint, but undoubtedly there, even if he can't see the source of it. But that dread just builds for him, shoulders tensing as he looks around, squinting out over the water.]

[He does stop, realizing just then how his throat feels dry and he was holding his breath so much that it leaves him in an almost gasp of air. He's not sure what hits him first, the ripples in the water not settling entirely this time, or how--]

Shiro.

[--Or how the water seems to darken like a large shadow from below, almost blending in, almost something that could have been missed if not for Keith can see now that it's coming closer. His eyes widen, struck with the full brunt force of the realization and a full blown panic in his voice.]

We need to get the hell out of--

[It's too late. Almost like it zero'd in on Keith when his eyes locked onto it, the creature swims impossibly fast at him for its size, attacks right as Keith was trying to stand, jaws digging into the side of his leg to straight up pull him into the water.]

[He didn't see the creature coming, his attention looking out at other parts of the water, instinctively knowing that if Keith saw something, he'd say so-- which is why he's completely side-swiped by the speed in which everything happens.]

[He starts to turn at the sound of his name, at the urgency in Keith's voice-- but before he can even register anything, Keith's being attacked and dragged into the water.]

Keith! [He's shouting, instantly on his feet, fruitlessly reaching out to try to grab Keith before he's dragged in, but the creature moves too fast for him.]

[In that split second where Keith is there and suddenly gone, it would be entirely too reckless to just dive in without knowing what that creature is and what they're dealing with and if there are more and it's built to fight in water and he's at a distinct disadvantage, etc etc etc-- anything at all. But then, it also has Keith. And Shiro doesn't even think about it, doesn't even hesitate as he instantly jumps into the water after Keith, consequences be damned.]

[It happens so fast that even Keith's scream of pain is muffled by the water, which quickly fills into his lungs as he finds himself completely submerged, nearly to the point of blacking out right then and there - the little bit of consciousness that he hangs on to (struck with excruciating pain as it is) serves him for only two thoughts: Self preservation and Shiro. He doesn't know what happened, everything too fast to process, but if he's been attacked, it's just as possible--

Maybe he could have reached for his blade, even almost tries to just on the instinct and panic alone, but the pain and the lack of air is ultimately too much. If he sees the faint shape of Shiro swimming towards him in the water, he might almost wonder if it's his wishful thinking (almost just as much as the thought of No no no, go, be safe hits him at the same time) before Keith just... passes out.]

[Shiro's focus, when he first jumps into the water, is entirely on Keith-- trying to get to him. He knows immediately when Keith passes out (hopes it's just him passing out, not something worse, god, no--) and that's when his focus shifts to getting Keith the fuck away from the monster.]

[His movements are, obviously, limited while swimming-- but it doesn't matter. His entire focus shifts to getting Keith out, to protecting him, to making sure he's okay. The monster's not letting go of Keith, in any case, and rounding a bit towards Shiro, which makes it easier for him to reach the creature. His hand's glowing with familiar energy, and he's coaxing it into a blade, jabbing it up towards its jaw in the hopes of making it release Keith.]

[The Galra energy, burning and powerful as it is, cuts severely into the shark's jaw, although with how violent and single-minded with hunger it is, it doesn't give up so easily, intent on attacking right back.

So it shakes with its jaw locked around Keith still in one awful swing of motion that tosses him around in the water before releasing him, blood everywhere coming both from the monster and from Keith -- and then the same terrifying set of teeth are rearing to try to catch him again, and get at Shiro in the process. Two for the price of one? It probably isn't very prepared to deal with another attack from that alien tech, though.]

[Well, violent, single-minded hunger gets to meet the violent, single-minded urge to protect. In the moment when Keith is let go and the monster swerves to try to get both of them, the blood in the water and those teeth are... not enough to send Shiro into a memory of the arena, but enough for him to lock onto that feeling of it: that desperation, that urge to survive. Hey, he knows that feeling all too well.]

[It's not that he falls into that daze like when his hands were bloody, but there's more surety in the movements, like he doesn't even quite notice that he's still in water. He moves swiftly to get between Keith and the monster, breaking the surface with a gasp for breath before raising his arm to meet that monster-- in an ideal world, he'd prioritize getting Keith onto dry land, but he can't risk him getting more hurt because of hesitation. And so the arm glows back into a sword and, mercilessly, he arcs it down-- slicing clean through the monster's bottom jaw, severing it from its body before he stabs upward through the roof of the mouth, too, each move firm and deadly.]

[The move is brutal and definitive - even if it could have lived that attack, the shark is left without means to strike back quite like before and it only struggles from the pain long enough to sink away from Shiro, the lower jaw floating off in another direction.

Behind him, Keith isn't quite sinking fast but drifts still submerged, the weight of the water in his lungs keeping him from the surface.]

[Only once he's sure the thing is dead does he turn away and hurry to Keith, grabbing him around the waist and forcing him to the surface, desperately swimming back towards the shore. Just as quickly as he slipped into that mindset of the arena, he falls away again, his concern for Keith overruling everything else.]

Keith-- [he knows he won't be able to respond, but at least holding him he can tell he's still alive, and there's a desperation to his voice now, that need to make sure he stays alive. All this blood... alsdhgasd;] Keith, Keith, hold on!

[Getting him up onto a lower bank as quickly as possible, careful not to jostle his leg too much, but moving as quickly as he's able.]

[He's not moving or able to go back to breathing on his own quite like this and once Shiro gets him full out of the water he -- lies there, head turned to the side and it really probably looks like the worst even if he's not actually beyond saving. The large shark-bite wound on his leg is another, very unsightly story not making matters better.]

[The panic that sweeps over him is. a lot. He's paralyzed for a moment, unsure what to do first, before he's moving quickly to touch his jaw, tilting his head up and feeling for a pulse, ducking down near his mouth to see if he can feel that breath. When he's confirmed there's a pulse but no breath, that cold wave of dread really settles over him.]

Keith-- Please. [No, no, no--]

[This, at least, he knows how to do and now he doesn't hesitate-- getting Keith breathing is more important, but he needs to stop the breathing. He rips off his jacket and ties it around Keith's upper thigh to try to slow the blood, then moves to compress his hands down on his chest to get his lungs moving again, firmly, then opens Keith's mouth gently and ducking down to breathe into his mouth. He alternates a few times with that-- chest compressions and breathing, checking each time to see if Keith's breathing on his own yet. His hands are shaking as he moves, adrenaline and fear, eyes on Keith's face the entire time.]

[It'll be a few times of that repetition before finally - finally - after what seems like far too long only because time slows with the panic of everything... with a gasp and a strangled cough, the water goes out of his mouth and Keith breathes, ragged but breathing nevertheless.

He doesn't immediately open his eyes and coughs out a few more times, between gasping for air, desperately trying to orient himself again even before he's really stable - the pain from his leg is impossible not to contend with all at once too, even with his high threshold for this kind of shit... it's a lot. AUGH.

When he does manage to stop spitting out water, he slumps, and weakly opens his eyes, searches for and finds him with his gaze like nothing else could quite anchor him like this.]

Keith-- [The relief on his face is painfully clear-- he looks utterly wrecked as he draws away from Keith to give him space as he coughs, coming back down again to wipe at his face, cleaning up his chin from all the sudden water from his lungs. His touch is unbearably gentle, his hand still shaking, his expression utterly gutted as he looks at him.]

Keith, I'm here. [One hand stays on his chest for a moment, seeking the comfort of feeling it rise and fall on its own, and his voice is shaky with relief, with that over whelming fear. He's okay, he's okay, he keeps telling himself-- he'll make sure he's okay.]

Don't try to move, okay?

[Everything is still almost too hazy for Keith to process but he can't not see the way Shiro looks right now, the desperation in him and the pain that Keith can't stand watching him go through. It's instinctive, when he tries to reassure him, doesn't necessarily try to move but his left hand grasps at Shiro's wrist, the one that's not resting on Keith's chest, weakly but just enough.]

Okay. [I'm okay, he silently affirms back to him, it's going to be all right.] Okay.

[He makes a soft, almost pained noise when Keith does this-- can tell it's Keith's need to reassure him, and god you really don't need to be reassuring him right now, focus on yourself, please--]

[But he takes his hand in his, his touch impossibly gentle. The hand on Keith's chest curls a little before lifting, touching his cheek, then his forehead, pushing back his hair-- trying to soothe him, despite it all.]

[Nods, a little shakily but it's Shiro's touch that does honestly help, as he regains more sense of the situation and himself. His voice still comes out raspy but certain.]

It's okay. Do it. [He gets this is how it goes, ready as much as he can be. Trusting Shiro entirely, in the end.]

[Nods, just barely squeezing his hand before letting go, his hands dropping away as he shifts down towards Keith's leg. He carefully unties his jacket and sets it aside. There's no hesitation as he reaches out to get Keith's pants off-- doesn't want the fabric to get in the way. He's impossibly gentle, being careful not to jostle Keith's leg as he gets the material off, assessing the damage from the shark's bite.]

[Immediately he can tell that it should be cleaned better than it's going to be in a situation like this, but nothing he can do about that. He uses the sleeve of his jacket to clean away as much as he can and then takes a deep breath.]

[He looks back up at Keith and holds out his hand to him.] Take my hand and don't let go.

[Because he's letting his metal hand heat up with energy, this time hesitating-- but only for a moment, waiting until Keith's holding onto his free hand, before planting his metal hand down firmly against Keith's thigh, to close up the wound.]

[He can't think much of it as the fabric goes, a priority in the pain pulsing incessantly through him even from the movements and cleaning, though he can hold it back enough not to make much of a sound then, shutting his eyes, trying to focus on breathing. Trying to stay steady.

When Shiro speaks, Keith opens his eyes again, locks gazes with him firmly and sure -- swallows down any nerves as he's reaching out to grab his hand tightly. To hold on without restraint, giving another little nod as a silent go ahead.]

[Because no matter how much he might steel himself for it, it's inevitable that when the burning metal touches his leg, the scream he lets out comes out involuntarily loud and unfiltered, pain searing through him. It'll be soon enough that it settles again, at least, that he quiets and just breathes heavily through the after-wave of it, but. Fuck. Fuck this and that -- whatever creature it was.

He doesn't once let go of Shiro's hand.]

[And it doesn't matter how much he's prepared himself for Keith's reaction-- very well remembers his own from when he had to do this to his own injury-- he still flinches a little in sympathetic pain when he hears Keith scream, holding his hand just as tightly as Keith holds on. Worst, probably, is that he has to shift his hand a few times in order to cover the entirety of the shark's bite-- but soon enough, the wound is closed up and the bleeding has stopped, although ideally he'd like to find some medicine for pain and possible infection, and bandages to wrap him up. At least the most pressing danger is passed-- Keith's alive, he's breathing, and he's no longer bleeding.]

There-- there, it's done. [He's shifting back up to get a better look at Keith's face, his expression guilty for having caused that pain, no matter how necessary.] Keith...

[This time when Keith eye's meet Shiro's he does look much shakier, mouth feeling dry as his lips stay parted through the heavy breaths that leave him. But even through that, he doesn't look away, seeks him out almost all the more. Wishes Shiro didn't have to look so guilty when this isn't his fault in the least, but maybe that's just as ievitable in the end. All he can do is...]

[If there was roughness in his voice before, now it's more like a whisper and sandpaper, but a softness to it in his earnestness.]

Shiro... [...] Shiro- thank you.

[His expression splinters even more for a moment, like he wants to protest, like he wants to shake his head-- and his hand shifts as if to touch his cheek again, before he draws it back again. It's still way too warm to touch his skin without hurting him. So, instead, he leans down, pressing his forehead to his gently, as if afraid that any touch is going to hurt him.]

It's-- Of course. [There's not even a question that he'd help you, that he'd do whatever he could to protect you.]

[Distantly, he thinks that this can't be the only creature like this-- thinks that he should probably warn the others, or something but... right now, in this moment, there's only Keith. He's all that matters. And with the adrenaline wearing down, he's seized by that cold wave of 'what if' scenarios, how easily it could have been that Keith didn't wake up.]

[His breath comes out wobbly, clenching his eyes shut as he just-- keeps his forehead to Keith's, trying to not visibly shake with that underlying terror. It almost threatens to overwhelm him until he forcefully squashes it down. This isn't about him. It's about Keith. It's about making sure he's okay.]

[... God. He leans his forehead up to Shiro's much as he can, seeking out that contact as much for comforting himself as it is a firm attempt at assurance for Shiro - almost like he can sense, can feel that renewed wave of fear washing over him, and how it makes him look so shaken and wrecked. The last thing Keith could ever want, injured or not.]

I know. I know, Shiro. [He hasn't ever doubted that for even a moment, and he isn't about to start now. Not least of all when you--] You...

You just saved me. [The words leave him and he can't quite keep the way it really hits him too right as he says it out loud. How close it was -- sadly far from Keith's first brush with death, but all the same, a heavy realization. At the same time, though, it serves as a reminder. You saved his life. [Something in his shoulders eases, at least, and he pulls away enough in order to see Keith's face better, to make sure his eyes aren't going glassy or anything like that. This time, he does touch his cheek, his hand having time to cool off.]

Doesn't even begin to make up for how many times you've saved me, really. [It doesn't quite land on the teasing tone such a statement would normally draw from him, still too shaken with so many possibilities and near misses just now. But, it's also the truth: the very least he can do, and he'd do it again a hundred times over to make sure Keith was safe.]

[There's a moment where Keith just watches him as he pulls away, before he turns his head to lean into the touch, not quite closing his eyes but his eyelids do lower a little. He sighs out, what would almost be the usual laughter when they tease each other, his hand squeezing Shiro's other one in a way that's almost body firm and shaky at once.]

Well. We've saved each other, then. [He couldn't even begin to put a count to it, not just for how many times he would just as quickly jump in to save Shiro as Keith can imagine Shiro did for him. That's definitely never even been a question, to him.

When he looks back over to Shiro properly again after a while, he smiles, just a little, his own tone a barely there attempt to lighten the air, much as he means the words. Heh.] ... Yeah. Even promise to keep it that way.
