[It's been some time since the world's magic has played in this way. But some of the eldest residents will probably notice some of the signs.

It all feels normal at first, as normal as life in Miracle Country can get. But people will start to feel off in some ways. Like something's missing... or more precisely, like they're losing something. Important memories, and the feelings attached to them, they're slipping away, shed in the form of magical feathers that people will lose here and there throughout the day. The way to recover these? Someone else has to pick them up for you.

When they do, they'll be sucked into a dreamlike state, along with the owner of the memory. You'll dive into a dark, empty place, only to watch at a distance whichever memory was lost. Only when it's been shared, will this memory return to where it belongs - and of course, while happy memories can be shared, some of them can be painful to experience again as they're recovered.

Then again, it'd be painful to lose them forever, right? Even the hurtful things in your past make you who you are now. So you might even end up seeking for someone to take a feather for you, to give those important memories back. And if you leave them alone, if you ignore them, maybe someone you don't want taking them will do it instead... the feathers might find their way into the wrong hands - any hands, as long as they can get back to you. They don't want to be separated, afterall.]

[Shakes her head.]

You don't need to apologize. You didn't overstep-- it was what I was willing to share. Besides, because of you, I was able to recover these memories. [Even if they're painful, they're hers.]

I'm used to people telling me, again and again, that I'm wrong for what I say about the value of my life. Strange as it is, it's refreshing... in a way, to not have to worry about you saying such things. [She can tell you're kind of a bad person, so. lol.]

I am pleased to hear I could be of assistance, of course. [And he means it. Sebastian enjoys being useful.]

Those who subscribe to the idea of the inherent value of every life will disagree with this, but... [he shrugs lightly, gently (and finally) giving her back her arm,] personally, I see not the point in arguing whether someone is right or wrong in how precious they deem any one life. You master presumably considers your life too valuable to trade for anyone else's, and I would not consider him more wrong in his opinion than you-- nor more right.

[Considers that line of thought, quiet for a long moment as a part of her rebels against the idea that her life could be worthwhile, but then... it isn't that she wants to say that Elias is completely wrong, either. She understands that, to him, it's a worthwhile exchange.]

That's one way to look at it, yes.

[He can tell she's not exactly one hundred percent on board, yes. Not that he has any particular investment in convincing her, naturally, so he says:]

A person who does not value themselves likewise would be disinclined to agree with me, I realise.

[Sebastian's known a few of those over the years. His current little master, most currently, despite his confident front.]

By the by - and I apologise should this be a rude thing to ask - but if I may, what might your master be?

"What"...? Ah. [Well, it's understandable that there would be such a question.]

He's never said. [She doesn't particularly trouble herself with wondering, either. Elias is Elias.] He is... a magus. But, he is not human and he is not fae.

A magus, is it? [As in a magician?] I would assume such a person to be human, but...

[Clearly that's not the case here.]

You certainly keep more interesting company than I realised, miss Chise.

I guess when you look at it so suddenly, it would all seem rather strange, but...

But to the one living it, it is perfectly normal, yes?

[He shrugs again, lightly.] "Strange" is not a bad thing, necessarily-- why, unusual things are often refreshing.

[I mean, the arm is definitely new and interesting, for one.]

That's true. Living with Elias... it was the first time I ever felt truly happy.

Because you were useful to him?

Yes.

And because I love him.

...Is that so? [Sebastian doesn't care much about physical appearances aside from this current dress-up game as a butler, and so he personally wouldn't see the whole... bone-ness of Elias as a hindrance to anything, but knowing humans... Again, what a strange child Chise is.]

Well, that would do it, of course. Love is quite a strange, but powerful, emotion, after all.

[Nodding, quiet for a long moment-- almost lost in thought, her smile a touch sad, as always.]

Yes... It's a strange emotion. I never really understood it, but... I'm glad I do now.

[Hm.]

Glad, huh...?

[There is, perhaps, an unspoken "but why" in there. In Chise's case, wouldn't it be a very painful emotion?]

[She gets that unspoken question there and she hums out, thoughtfully.]

There were many times where I thought that I should never have been born. But meeting Elias, and all the people who surround me, it made me realize that if I were born, perhaps it was for this reason. It's painful to think it at times, but all the same... I spent so long feeling nothing at all. Even if this is painful, it is not so painful as being completely alone.

I see.

[Sebastian quietens for few moments, thinking that answer over. Funny: he's known so many humans who would have killed for the ability to numb their emotions completely. Of course, they seldom entirely understood what that would entail, but even so... Again, Chise is a strange child.]

[...Then he chuckles lightly.]

--Strange as it is to say, I believe I understand that sentiment in a way, miss Chise.

[Not wanting not to be completely alone, no, but anything being better than the ennui of feeling numb.]

Oh... I'm glad. I wasn't sure if I was explaining myself very well, in the end.

But then again, such things are complicated things, I suppose.

Complicated things as emotions cannot be well understood has someone not experienced them themselves, I would say, quite regardless of how well they are explained.

[Hence why it's "strange" that Sebastian should understand it even a little - he's certainly never longed for love or company, after all.]

Yes, that does seem true. It'd be like trying to describe colors to someone who's never seen them before, I think. [How do you describe 'red', for example?]

That seems an apt--

[He doesn't get to finish the sentence before a few additional feathers see-saw through the air, conveniently closeby as if they're trying to signal something (if one subscribes to the possibility of sentient feathers in this ludicrous world).]

Ah. Feel you, by chance, as if you are still missing memories, miss Chise? [Up for round two of this nonsense?]

[info]belovedchild

Ah-- I don't know. I guess I must be, if these are here. [Because surely the possibility of Sebastian missing memories is out of the question.]

[In any case, she's reaching out to touch one of the feathers with a small sigh.]

[Obviously out of the question - the possibility doesn't even occur to Sebastian either.

(Sebastian is always very smart like that.)

Instead, he watches as Chise reaches for the feather, thinking to himself that if he must be stuck watching memories, there certainly could be duller ones than those of miss Chise. All in all, it could be wor--]

[This time, the quiet of the dreamscape - engulfing them once more - is broken by laughter, as a strange shape, all jagged swirling shadows, tears an oddly dressed group of people apart limb by limb. The scene shifts: the shadows melt into Sebastian, eyes glowing red, pledging his loyalty to his new master.]

[To say she's shocked is an understatement-- not necessarily for what she's seeing, but that she's seeing Sebastian's memories. In fact, for the first few moments of the memories laying out, she's confused if only because she can't immediately place what memory of hers she's witnessing.

Once it's clear it's Sebastian she's-- just watching. She doesn't particularly seem shocked or disgusted or devastated by what she's seeing. On the contrary, she looks curious, or as if something... well, suddenly makes sense. (Sorry Sebastian, there was always something different about you.)]

This is...

[Oh. On the one hand, these are nice memories, and there's certainly a pleasure to relieving them again. Sebastian spends some time initially staring at the unfolding memory just as Chise is - not even someone like him is completely unaffected by suddenly having memories forcefully returned.]
