[It's been some time since the world's magic has played in this way. But some of the eldest residents will probably notice some of the signs.

It all feels normal at first, as normal as life in Miracle Country can get. But people will start to feel off in some ways. Like something's missing... or more precisely, like they're losing something. Important memories, and the feelings attached to them, they're slipping away, shed in the form of magical feathers that people will lose here and there throughout the day. The way to recover these? Someone else has to pick them up for you.

When they do, they'll be sucked into a dreamlike state, along with the owner of the memory. You'll dive into a dark, empty place, only to watch at a distance whichever memory was lost. Only when it's been shared, will this memory return to where it belongs - and of course, while happy memories can be shared, some of them can be painful to experience again as they're recovered.

Then again, it'd be painful to lose them forever, right? Even the hurtful things in your past make you who you are now. So you might even end up seeking for someone to take a feather for you, to give those important memories back. And if you leave them alone, if you ignore them, maybe someone you don't want taking them will do it instead... the feathers might find their way into the wrong hands - any hands, as long as they can get back to you. They don't want to be separated, afterall.]

[Rather than sound offended, Sebastian actually laughs - a brief, quick scoff.]

I suppose I should take it as positive thing, that you think me kind.

[There is an unspoken but audible "I thought you were smarter than that".]

I doubt I'd go that far. [If pressed, she'd maybe hedge a guess that he has kind moments, but never that he's, overall, a kind person.] I just know that your... interaction ["friendship" she doesn't say but it's probably implied] with Lucifer is a unique one.

[Fine, don't take the bait of his passive-aggression, then. He scoffs again, milder this time, and drops the annoyed smile.]

Certainly, I never would have foreseen becoming acquainted with him, of all people. Or that this is how he would be as a person.

[It's like a bad joke, isn't it? Milton's "sympathetic villain" taken to the pathetic extreme, or some such.]

[Hmm...]

I think that's fair to say about most anyone who gets to know him. [That he's unexpected-- both to know him in general, and to know what he's actually like.]

Quite. How interesting ["nonsensical", he means], then, to single his and my acquaintance out as "unique"... [Pls stop it with that] but no matter. He enjoys speaking of himself enough that I don't doubt he relays his woes to anyone willing to give him the time of the day.

[So "unique" nothing, thank you very much.]

I'm not sure if that's precisely true. [He might talk to randos about random things, but being actually open about things...?]

He would not speak of such things, you mean?

[Sighs out.]

Lucifer is... complicated when it comes to this. [Sometimes he'll overshare, sometimes he'll undershare, sometimes he'll project exponentially onto a case and not talk about what he's actually feeling... etc etc.]

[Hmm.]

He is the kind of person long used to not being listened to - who is accustomed not to share his thoughts with others yet recently has been presented with the idea that sharing such thoughts is beneficial. He is, however, still ignorant of when and how much to share, and with whom. No?

[Why on earth else would he be so stupid as to confide in Sebastian, of all people?]

I think the point is that he's trying, and that's something he deserves credit for. It can be difficult to put yourself out there.

[You deserve credit just for trying?]

...As you say. [<-- in the clear tone of "I DON'T GET IT". What a foreign concept. Talk about setting the bar high.]

[plz.]

Sometimes, just making that first attempt is the most difficult step. We can't all expect to be experts in something our first try out.

Oh, demanding expertise or even competence at any one thing on a first attempt would be unreasonable.

[But, like, Chloe do you realise how many soul-searching sessions Sebastian's sat through. "First" nothing.]

If it really bothers you so much, you can just tell him to lay off, you know.

If I may, I do not believe I said it bothers me.

[Yes yes, she had a point in saying that which he's ignoring. Judging others is his favourite hobby; don't take it from him.]

Rather, it is somewhat interesting to see how human-like he is, in spite of what he is - even if that inevitably means he is dreadfully poor at understanding his own feelings.

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]ohdetective

Having feelings isn't a strictly human thing, you know.

[info]servingdinner
2018-08-02 08:39 pm UTC (link)
Oh, to some extent, no.

[He shrugs lightly.]

Yet, people are very enamoured with that idea, are they not? 'Do creatures other than humans feel?' 'Do they love?' 'If they do, do they so enough to be like humans?'

What I mean is, I was surprised to find he is human-like in his emotions, not to find he has feelings to begin with.

[Sebastian: continues being really good at saying completely normal human things.]

And what sort of emotions were you expecting from him, then?

Ah, well... Cruelty, for one.

[Lucifer sometimes talks big about all the horrible torture he's inflicted on people and how good he is at it, but as someone who is truly, genuinely cruel? Sebastian doesn't buy it.]

Well... It's understandable to expect that, considering, but then I guess that just proves his point that people don't understand the real story. And that people are quick to not give him enough credit.

Oh, [he says, shaking his head: that isn't how he meant it, you see--] people's ideas of anything transcending their own reality will be full of inaccuracies - that is inescapable. I would take no human account on such things as fact.

[He's not expecting cruelty because of the human fairytales about the Devil, no. Rather...]

There is a cruelty to all beings standing above lesser creatures, no? Certainly it seems so from the perspective of those lesser creatures; mythologies from all over the world tell of gods, angels, demons and spirits that cruelly toy with human lives, unheeding of the value of what to them seem short, insignificant existences. Is that not so?

[Now, human lives are short and insignificant, of course, but that's beside the point.]

What I mean to say is, I would have expected him to be cruel, not because of what he has or has not done or because what truth there is to the stories about him, but because of what he is. Whether devil or angel, that which stands above humanity seldom has much kindness to spare for it.

That seems to me like a generalization. Not everything larger than something smaller, as you define it, is going to end up being automatically cruel. [She can understand the reasoning, and she's by no means saying it doesn't happen or can be the case. Considering her line of work, she's seen a lot of cruelty in the world.]

I'm not sure it can always be so simply black and white. Especially not when it comes to him.

[Hmm.]

Well, generalisations by definition paint the world in broad strokes. Would it seem less offensive a generalisation, were I to say I chiefly had supernatural creatures in mind?

[Not all humans kick puppies just because the puppies are smaller, yadda yadda.]

[Sigh.]

I wonder if supernatural creatures would protest, then, in that case.

Some supernatural creatures would protest, no doubt, were any assessment of their character off by even the slightest margin.

[e__e Ie, don't worry; he knows better than to tell Mr Sensitive-About-His-Image that he's a softie.]
