Thread: Hawkeyes vs. Swing Dancing [Kate/Clint]
Characters: Kate Bishop, Clint Barton
NPCs: dance instructors, other students
Location: West Hartford, CT → Fred Astaire Dance Studio
Timeline: 11/06/11 -- late afternoon
Description: Kate and Clint. Swing dancing lessons. Snark.
Rating: PGish?

Despite the company it forced her to keep, Kate was actually excited about her swing lessons! She'd worn black peddlepushers with a pair of teal All-Stars and matching collared shirt in a throw-back to 1950s style to get into the mindset. (Susan had wanted her to wear one of those dresses or skirts but, seriously, she wasn't doing that. For one thing, it made her feel self-conscious wearing skirts. For another, she thought Clint might tease her. Also, it would've made it feel date-ish and that was not okay.)

Anyway. Kate signed them in, smiling at the man seated behind the table and ignoring Clint. (Honestly, if she didn't need a partner... oh well. Maybe she'd meet someone here who she could continue learning with or something.) She slapped on the nametag with her name on it and handed Clint's to him. (See? She could be helpful! And nice...ish. Yeah.)

Trusting Clint would follow her (which may have been a mistake but whatever), Kate headed toward the back and tried not to feel nervous. This was the first class. She didn't need to know anything. To distract herself, she looked around at the dozen or so people milling about with mild curiosity. It appeared she wasn't the only person who'd tried dressing era appropriately, though the others were much more vintage and put together than she was. Honestly, it was kind of awesome. And if she'd been with anyone else, she would've commented aloud on it. Oh well.

Kate rolled her eyes. Of course he would make it her problem. He was the king of doing that. It was really freaking annoying!

Although, following Clint's lead was actually surprisingly easy. Kate could admit he was doing a decent job... but she was better. He was stepping, she was dancing. There was a bounce in her step, while she smiled because it was supposed to be fun! And there was smoothness to her steps, too, that she knew looked good.

"Good, good!" Lisa ceased her counting and Kate stopped dancing, turning to look up front. "Now I'm going to teach you the missing steps. What you're going to do is take a small step back with your lead foot-- that's left for leads and right for follows-- on the fifth beat, then shift your weight from that lead foot to your other foot on the sixth beat. This will set you up to step with your lead foot again when we hit one. Watch as we demonstrate."

Chuck and Lisa did a quick triple step to the side, then one back and: "Step back, shift, and go again." After the lead off triple step, Lisa stepped away from Chuck and smiled at the class again. "Now you try. I'm going to count again, then we'll pick it up and then we'll try it to music! So-- one-and-two, three-and-four, five, six..."

Kate looked at Clint smirking. "Not to complicated for you, is it, Barton?" Yes, she was being a bit bratty. No, she didn't care. Giving him a hard time was a large part of why she'd made him accompany her in the first place.

"Not too complicated at all Princess." He sounded confidant as he talked, but his steps were still steps, and he was aware that if anyone was watching the two of them, it would be Kate that got the attention. That was bothersome.

Despite the fact that they were in the very start of all of this - and just doing basic steps, his two feet tangled together, and he stumbled for a moment. "Fuck." He snarled under his breath, as he regained his footing and tried to pick up the steps again.

He was going to have to practice - that was cool. Except - he was going to have to find a place to practice. His room was out, because his damn roommate would see.

Kate smirked but was nice enough not to comment when Clint stumbled. Of course, the big fat superior grin on her face was as much of a comment as actual words would've been, so. Maybe she wasn't all that nice, after all. (But, hey, this was Clint. Wasn't like he didn't deserve it.)

"Good, good!" Lisa called from the front. "Let's pick it up-- one-and-two, three-and-four, five, six..."

Now Kate struggled just a little bit. She missed a beat, hissing in annoyance. She jumped back in when the count restarted, determined to do it right and prove she was the better of the two of them. The bouncing, the (somewhat forced) smile, the general fluidness all remained, so she wasn't too worried. But still. Damn.

While Clint wasn't doing any better then Kate (damnit!) when Lisa called for them to pick up the pace, he did smirk himself when she missed a beat. Sure, she had more reason to smirk then he did - but that was fine. He was going to practice. Practice so much ...

Snapping himself out of his thoughts, Clint worked on focusing on the here and now.

He was going t be better then Kate at this. Oh yes he was.
