[Tsukasa had asked Rei before, and she didn't seem to be really strongly against the idea of having a cat... so he had left her a note asking her to meet him at the pet cafe around lunch.]

[He headed there early, not content to just pick the cats up one by one, and climbed into the pen with the kittens, sitting in the middle of it and letting the kittens crawl all over him.]

I think it likes you.

[Tsukasa pets the skinny grey kitten on his lap. It's smaller than the other kittens, and looks a bit weaker.]

- likes me?

[She looks slightly surprised. An animal shouldn't take a liking to her - she should feel strange to it, more like another of its kind. But she keeps wiggling her finger around, letting it have its fun, until it stands up against the glass and lets out a particularly loud mewling noise.

Does it want - ?

Hesitantly, Rei reaches in and picks it up. She receives a good sharp scratch on her wrist for her efforts, but that just tells her to be more gentle - when she relaxes her hold, the kitten tucks itself into her arms and begins to purr.]

Tsukasa-san, are they meant to make this noise?

Yes. That means it's happy.

[He takes his hat off his head and places the runt-kitten in it, letting it snuggle in. His face is surprisingly peaceful as he watches the tiny thing.]

Happy... [She feels a sharp, emotional tug in her chest when she looks down at the little creature, which has its blue eyes slightly open but is still purring away happily.] It is a foolish thing. I do not even know how to care for it.

[Her voice is soft, though, not as scathing as her words.]

Is that the one you like? It is very small.

I can teach you.

[He nods at the question.]

She'll grow, though. If properly cared for. And... no one should be unwanted just because they're small.

Understood. [It's a good point. No one should be unwanted for any reason. She just doesn't want to see it die young and upset Tsukasa...]

This one has strange ears. [Instead of standing up like the others, they lie forward on the kitten's head, almost flat. It gives her head a strange, spherical look. She can't help but smile softly - she likes it. It looks different than the others.]

It's cute.

[He attempts to get out of the pen, and displace the kittens that have taken up residence on his feet.]

Yes. [Cute. She's not sure what cute means, but she feels fond of this little creature. Unusually fond. She looks at its soft orange fur, its dark blue eyes, and nods once.]

Asuka.

[He smiles, and manages to wade out of the pen, still holding his hat with the tiny kitten.]

I think I'll name this one Macha.

[She glances around, looking at all the supplies - caring for an animal seems to take a great deal of work.]

What else will we need?

We'll need to get food for them, and bowls to put their food and water in. And we'll need a litterbox and some litter... we'll have to train them how to use it.

Maybe some toys or something, but cats play with just about anything, even boxes.

We can control where they evacuate? [Well, that's handy. Maybe they're smarter than she first thought.] Are they difficult to train?

[She's wandering the aisles now, looking at all the strange and colourful toys. What would Asuka like? Probably something red. Or yellow. She picks up a bag of what appear to be stuffed mice, spotting both a red and a yellow mouse inside. Tsukasa's kitten can have the others.]

Not so much when they're small... they're harder to train when they're older.

... Most of this I know from books, I've only ever really fed stray kittens on the street.

[She gives a brief but surprisingly soft smile. He is truly a kind soul.

Then she's back to concentrating, trying to take this all in.]
I will take out books from the library as well. I should not be dependent on you at all times.

[Food - oh, well, they have something called kitten food. That's handy. She grabs a basket, since her arms are getting full with Asuka tucked into her left elbow, then picks out a medium-sized bag.]

[Tsukasa wanders over and gets a litter box... and then tries to lift the bag of kitty litter.]

[It doesn't move. :| ]

[Oh dear. And Rei is no stronger than Tsukasa, especially not when she has to carry a kitten with one arm.]

Perhaps we could call a robot?

[She waves over one of the robots guarding the cafe and manages to communicate her difficulties to it - eventually, it hoists the bag of cat litter and hovers there, waiting for them to be finished.

It still feels strange to her, commanding anyone or anything to do her bidding. But being in the hospital so often has made her used to the robots, so it doesn't trouble her quite so much.]

Is there anything else?

Not that I can think of. We can always come back for things later.

Yes. [She hoists the basket and gives Asuka a quick glance - she appears to be sleeping - then nods to the robot and leads the way out of the cafe. It's yet to sink in that she's just gotten herself a pet. She's never wanted a pet, never considered a pet, never even ruminated on the word pet... and yet now she has a living being under her control.

A living being that appears to care for her, at least as much as it is capable.

She's going soft. This place is changing her. She's not sure whether it's for the better or not.]

[She stiffens at first, not used to being touched so freely, but it's just Tsukasa - with a soft breath, she forces her muscles to relax again and glances at him apologetically.]

I suppose I am surprised. I had not expected to get a pet for myself.

Cats are pretty fast. She'll probably move out of the way.

And you're a good person, Rei. I think you'll be fine.

You are very kind, Tsukasa-san.

[When they reach their house, Rei sets down her basket and opens the door, then stands aside to allow Tsukasa and the robot inside. Once the litter has been set down in the living room, the robot disappears out the door, and Rei gently places Asuka on the couch so that she can help get the supplies set up.]

[Macha gets set down next to her new sister once they get in, and promptly curls up on a pillow. Tsukasa heads into the kitchen to set out the bowls of food and water.]

[Rei watches, adding everything to memory - how much food to place in the dish, how much water. She doesn't know if cats know when to stop eating, or if they will eat themselves sick.

Then she glances out into the living room and sees that the two cats have curled up together, like Yin and Yang, both fast asleep.]

They seem to get along.

They do. That's good.

[He sets up the litterbox in the bathroom, with some paper underneath it.]

Hopefully they'll get the idea.
