[The cold, sterile tiles of a laboratory span beneath your feet. They’re black, and your warped reflection wavers in their reflective surface. Is your skin grey, or is that just the dim light of the lab? Do you suddenly have horns, or is that just a trick of the light too? Not that it matters.
Test tubes loom on either side of you. They start roughly the size of a grown man as they line the aisle, but grow larger and larger until they fade into the shadows of the far end of the ceiling. Something huge floats in those, something huge and monstrous, exhaling bubbles the size of your head with each breath. Closer to you, though, in the smaller tubes, a little black or white creatures drifts gently up and down. They’re roughly humanoid, but hairless, and all one uniform colour. Their joints are visible as they float in the slime - perhaps they put you in mind of ball joint dolls. Or perhaps they remind you of pawns. Chess pawns, anthropomorphised. Maybe they make you think of Marina’s Mail Mistress. It doesn’t really matter. You don’t pay attention to the graveyard stuffers.
This room, this museum of growing monstrosities, eventually comes to an end. The door to the next room is open, and you step over the threshold. The light here is still dim, but notably brighter than in the other room.
Karkat stands there. There are six test-tubes a little to the front and on either side of him, eleven filled with bright green slime. In front of him is a vast machine, targeted on an adult troll with his arms held aloft as he frantically waves a blood red banner back and forth. The fluttering of the banner makes it hard to tell for sure, but the cancer symbol in dark grey seems to be etched into the material.
Karkat’s fist slams onto the huge button and the empty test tube is filled, briefly, with a green slime shape in the same pose as that troll. It collapses almost immediately. A message flashes up in the computer screen briefly and the test tubes start to shake. The apperifier in the middle of the floor glows brightly…
… And then there are twelve grubs wriggling on the floor. They range from brightest red to royalist purple, each with their own distinctive horn shapes adorning their little heads. Karkat stares at them in a sort of bemused shock. He leans back against the control panel and -
The slime in the tubes shakes again, then it drains into one long container underneath the twelve. This mixes around and the appearifier charges again. The twelve wrigglers scatter off of it. They all make a beeline for the dimmer light near the room you just exited. Maybe your eyes are fixed on them as they wriggle closer. Maybe they’re not.
Either way, you won’t miss that flash of light that signifies the appearance of twelve more little grubs, almost identical to the others.
There’s silence for a moment. Then, just as the little grubs begin to squeal with delight, Karkat lets out a heavy, shaky sigh.]
Oh, fuck no…
