[Martha thinks a moment, then her smile widens.]

How about an exchange then. An excerpt of my story for Chaucer.

Chaucer? I can do Chaucer. Actually, I could do Chaucer in my sleep.

[ And probably has at some point. ]

I know you can though I've only heard you recite it once. And you reserve it for special people. So yes. If you want special story hearing privileges, then I want to hear Chaucer.

[She grins at him with a 'so there' smile.]

[ Ah, she picked up on that, huh? How Chaucer is important to him, intimately so? Strangely enough, he doesn't feel the slightest bit weird about including her in that group. ]

Deal. Any requests?

[Martha shook her head and smiled.]

Whatever speaks to you. Not Parliament of Fowls. You graced me with that last time.

In that case... what about The Legend of Good Women? It's a bit long and not exactly considered his best work, but...

But something about it made you choose it now so I think it's capital!

Alright! Then that's the one you'll get. [ He chuckles. Not a lot of people make him do that anymore. ]

[She doesn't know that. Either way, Martha takes the moment to plop herself down on a nearby bench and turns her full attention on him.]

Oh, you mean right now? [ He can do right now. Just... give him a moment to settle in and find it in his brain library. ]

A thousand times I have heard it said that in heaven is joy and in hell pain; and I grant well that it is so. Nevertheless, I know this well, that there is no person dwelling in this land who has been in either hell or heaven, or who can know of them in any other way than as he has heard tell or found it written, for no person can put his knowledge to the test.

[He really was a great orator. She leaned forward as he spoke, listening to the wash of words. And of course she applauded when he was done.]

You really are good, Reid.

Thank you. [ Is he blushing? It feels like he's blushing. He shifts his weight, self-conscious. ] Mostly people just tell me to shut up.

[Martha scoots over on the bench so he doesn't have to bear her scrutiny if he doesn't want to.

Well, I did ask for it. Besides, when the main person you hear monologue-ing does so at light speed with technobabble, it's nice to hear something other.

[ Hey, that's how he usually talks! Although... ]

Literature deserves some effort. My mom would kill me if she heard me butcher Chaucer.

Your mom is right. Chaucer deserves some respect.

And I suppose a story for a story right?

[She leaps up from the bench and assumes roughly the same position he'd been in to start her story.]

The Setting: New York, New York. Time? Great Depression. The Doctor wasn't so great at picking out places to take me. Let's go to New York. Let's live in a Shantytown. Let's go explore the sewers where people are disappearing...

That's right. People were disappearing, and it was up to us and a crew of other men to go find out what was happening...

[ He settles in, attention locked at her and a small smile playing on his face. Maybe some of this is familiar and maybe some isn't, but hearing her talk about the Doctor like this is making him perhaps the happiest he's been in a really long time. ]
