[ People who haven't known him very long may not even know that he's a generally happy person at home. Well, from time to time, at least. More than you'd expect from someone in his situation. This place is really killing him by inches with every day he stays. ]

He's a really great kid. Takes after his parents. [ And just so this doesn't become too one-sidedly emotional, he turns his attention back to her photos. ] Are these your friends?

Yes. This is S.E.E.S. I remember Ikutsuki taking this photo. [Interesting that there's no sign of her customary -san attached to Ikutsuki's name. She doesn't sound as pleased mentioning him as she does to see the photo itself.]

Alright. S.E.E.S. stands for Student Extracurricular Execution squad. Ikutsuki helped cover up our true mission so we would have access to the school and dorms. [She can't help but smile as she looks back at the photo, bad memories replaced by good ones. She starts with the red haired girl in the middle and works outwards.] Mitsuru was our student counsel president last year. Fuuka can navigate and sense weaknesses with her Persona. She helps maintain my systems as well. [The girl in the front with the greenish hair. Then her finger moves back to the girl in pink.] Yukari is my roommate in school this year. She is also on the archery team. Akihiko was captain of the boxing team. He and Mitsuru graduated at the end of the year. [Moving past the boy with the white hair to the one next to him, with the hat and the sad eyes.] Shinjiro died last year. It was before I developed my emotions. Junpei is on the baseball team, and Ken is still in elementary school but an excellent fighter. [The boy with the ballcap and the brown hair. Then there's the dog.] Koromaru is perhaps my closest friend. Except... [The girl with brown hair. The one he saw in her nightmare. The one who died.]

[ Extracurricular Execution squad sounds illegal, but whatever, it's not his place to judge. He looks at the photos, committing the faces and names to memory as she points them out because somehow that seems like the most important thing he could do. They're from such different worlds but she's a dear friend by now and if he can't do anything else, he can do this.

There's dawning recognition at her pause. ]

Yes, that is her. [She manages a smile that's more wistful than sad.] I have not been entirely honest with you about why she was so important to me.

There was an accident ten years ago that caused a great many supernatural problems including a very powerful Shadow, the Death arcana. [She flips to another image, indicating the huge black figure hanging in the sky.] I was created to destroy it, but I could not fully defeat it alone. I shattered it into twelve powerful Shadows and contained Death by sealing it inside a child I found nearby. She was the only living thing to have survived our fight, and therefore my only option. I was too badly damaged to continue and spent the next ten years in shut down mode in a lab until she and her friends took a trip near my location. My memory had been damaged as well and I did not know what I had done. I simply woke up and knew there was someone nearby I needed to find. I never knew why she was so important to me, just that I needed to be near her. I only remembered too late, when we inadvertently defeated the twelve Shadows and strengthend Death enough for it to emerge again. I was obsessed with her because I knew it was inside and our business was unfinished. She would not have had the knowledge to defeat it if I hadn't done what I did, but she might also have lived, or there might have been another way. That thought bothered me for some time after what happened.

This is Nathan Harris. He was here awhile back - I don't know if you ever met him, but we're from the same world. I met him during a case. At first I thought he might be our guy... someone was killing prostitutes and Nathan was disturbingly interested in the case, but in the end it turned out to be someone else. Still, talking to Nathan I realised that something wasn't right. He had... obsessive thoughts, intrusive thoughts about killing women. It was the only way, uhm... the only way he could find sexual pleasure.

We did a psychiatric evaluation of him. My mentor came to the conclusion that although Nathan hadn't hurt anyone yet, it was just a matter of time before he did. He was fifteen. Hearing about this, he tried to kill himself but I got to him in time. I saved his life.

That was six years ago. I still wonder if I made the right choice.

I believe we must try to live without regret. I do not always succeed at it myself but I know my bonds with my friends give me strength and make me who I am and I would not have those without the choices I made, even the bad ones. I had a hard time understanding that until I found my Answer.

To my life. To my questions about why I exist or what sort of purpose I have. I believe she found a similar Answer on her own journey. It is difficult to explain. [The Velvet Room is even stranger than the rest of her supernatural stories.] Do you remember what I told you when they made us believe it was the future? About working to protect people and encourage them to believe life is worth living? That was my Answer. I learned it is what I need to do.
