He'd seen two people look at him like that upon first meetings recently and it was no big leap to assume this woman was also acquainted with someone called Malcolm Merlyn. Fortunately, though, it seemed that Ray and Felicity had been doing their job and his actual identity was already known to her, which was something of a relief.

He was starting to get an inkling of how Spike had felt when he got mistaken for John Hart.

He was about to respond to the polite greeting when he saw her go pale at something amongst the photos and he came forward automatically, reaching out as if to catch her if she were to fall. "Hey, is everything all right?"

"Eh No," she answered without thinking and than shook her head, "Yes, yes, sorry," she looked at him and at the board. "That's...." she couldn't even say it, tears started to stream down her cheeks, it was her funeral, her family saying farewell to her.

"I...I...I..." she stop, she didn't like stammering so she stop, "that's my grave." Her hand pointed to the picture, "I knew of it, I just..." she was crying full on now, sorry Jack! Seeing Oliver there, the backs of her family and friends, she just cried.

He grimaced, sympathy washing through him. He'd been a time-traveller; he knew about the horror of seeing your own grave and while it had never happened to him (and, frankly, wasn't likely to given his immortality) he could understand how shocking it must be.

"Hey, it's okay, let it out," he said soothingly, coming to stand beside her and wrapping a big, warm arm around her shoulders. "Being told about your own death is one thing, but seeing actual, physical evidence of it really kinda brings it home, doesn't it?"

This was very awkward, but he was kind, his hug was needed and she just cried in his shoulder. "It does," she tried to reel her emotions in, but it wasn't working for the time being. She made a little annoyed noise and sniffled, finally pulling away from him.

"I'm sorry," she told him as she moved her hand to wipe her face, "It's just became so real now, you know?" she offered and cleared her throat and her hands moved to rub her face.

It wasn't awkward at all in Jack's book. He was after all quite uniquely qualified to understand this sort of thing. The only thing that was awkward, really, was his resemblance to Malcolm Merlyn, and he was grateful that she seemed able to look past that to accept his comfort, at least for the moment.

"Yeah, I know," he said sympathetically, fishing out a clean white handkerchief as she moved away and offering it to her to mop her face. "It's a scary thing to have to face, and no-one's ever prepared for it. Do you know how far in your future it is?" There was no-one he recognised in that picture, to give him a clue as to relative dating.

Her hand slide down to her stomach, the scars of her wounds, "could be days to a week," she said softly, "I thought I was dying before I came here." She knew she had now, Ray confirmed it, now she saw this picture.

Her eyes looked over to him and she took that handkerchief, "How is it you look like the man I viewed as a monster, but not be him?" she shook her head, taking a moment to regain her control of emotions.

"Ouch." Both physical and psychological. He took a breath. "I know it doesn't help much but... you're not the only one who's been brought here on the brink of death. Once the initial shock's worn off, you might be able to feel grateful that at least you've been given an extension on life, by coming here."

Then he huffed a soft chuckle at her question, shaking his head too as he thumbed through the photos he'd collected and picked out a couple of him and John Hart. "As to that, see this guy? He was born in the fifty-first century. And here, there's Spike, who is physically absolutely identical to him." (And yes, he did mean in every detail. He'd slept with them both.) "Uncanny, isn't it? Seems like the universe is lazy, and just copies people to save processing space or something!"

Laurel nodded her head, she most likely will, she had been stronger than ever till this moment, she just needed to get her bravo back intact. As she showed her pictures, she arched a brow to his words and the picture. "So we are all basically a dime a dozen within the universe?"

Shaking her head, her hair fell into her face as she started to laugh, it was unbelievable, but yet here was the proof. He was right, very very right, once her laughter died down, "I'm Laurel, Laurel Lance."

"Well, perhaps not all of us," he admitted, and then grinned. "On the other hand, perhaps it's nice to think that some of the nasty things your Malcolm Merlyn has done might be balanced out by all the people I've managed to save?"

He smiled. "Good to meet you, Laurel Lance. Captain Jack Harkness."

Far more restrained than his usual greeting, and without the usual level of flirtatiousness, partly because of the sombre way they'd met and partly because he simply didn't intend to hit on anyone here beyond Ianto and Spike for the moment. He was finally starting to understand how that worked.

"That is a very welcoming thought," she told him in agreement as she nodded her head. He had point, perhaps they were the ying and yang of each other. Laurel let out a long sigh as she pushed her hair out of her face, she felt drain.

Though he smiled and introduced himself, she cocked her head to the side to look at him. There was the pull to him, but she wasn't sure what it was and why it was happening, she chuckled softly, "My father was Captain on the police force. Are you in law enforcement or a pilot?"

"Yeah, it's kind of comforting, isn't it?" he agreed, pleased that he'd thought of it. It made the idea of a man who looked like him being so evil a bit more bearable.

He grinned at the assumptions she made (and tried not to wince at the comparison to her father, because it made him feel old. Which he was, but most of the time he managed not to feel as old as he was!) and said expansively, "I've been a Captain of a lot of things in my time. The man whose name I took - the real Captain Jack Harkness? He was an American volunteer in the Royal Air Force, and I took his place after he died, so yes, I have been a pilot. But most recently, I was Captain of Torchwood Three, a British organisation committed to saving the earth from alien invasion." His teeth showed. "As I said, I've been a lot of things over the years!"

Her eyes widen as he explained his name and than she stood there for a moment, in shock. Alien invasion? Laurel than laughed, she couldn't help it, this was so surreal. "Sorry," she said, "coming here just kind of makes anything that seems impossible, possible. Which I should have figured since my sister is a time traveler."

Pang of Sara, missing her, made her frown for a moment, but than she looked back to Jack. "I'm going to head back to my room, but it was a pleasure to meet you and I hope we can talk again soon."
