DAY 427 — Morning Greeting
Good morning residents.

While tightening up the program, we noticed a long time scheduled event that you may actually benefit from, so rather than remove it we're allowing it to play out as planned. Well, mostly as planned.

Today is group therapy day! I'm sure you all have plenty of things you need to get off your chest, so we've arranged a few meeting places where you can do just that! Just follow the signs to whatever group you feel speaks to you the most, and if you still need a little bit of a push there will be treats waiting for you there.

Oh, and unlike before, none of this is mandatory. You won't get in trouble for skipping out, I promise you. However, Jaden and myself will attend a few of these meetings so if you have no interest in improving your emotional and mental health then perhaps we could just have a chat, face to face.

I look forward to meeting you, sweeties.

[ She ends the broadcast with a jaunty tune, as is customary. ]

[You know how hard it is to get used to a physical avatar? A physical anything? And on top of that he has to try and keep a conscious effort going of fitting in with the inmates, dressing the template to look 'normal' but also appropriate. (And all for their convenience over his, naturally.) He gives a tug to the lapels of his jacket, turning Mary's way to seek her opinion on the matter. He's got less experience with the work and study of this breed of inmate, she's really something of a mentor in that regard.]

This'll do, you think?

[ It's kind of nice to have a colleague that she can be more personal with and if she's perfectly honest, she finds him rather adorable in how inept he is at human behaviour and having a physical form. She steps in closer, straightening out his collar. ]

You look wonderful. [ A reassuring smile. ] Nervous?

I wouldn't say nervous, but reluctant's not far off. [He straightens his neck, letting her do what she will with the collar.

He doesn't know what to do with his hands so they go in his pockets. It works quite well.]
I am interested to learn from them, but the barriers seem thick. And dense.

[ Ah, he's already getting the hang of it. Good boy. ]

We have to be patient. I know it's hard, but they're more scared of you than you are of them. They're young and small and so very vulnerable in every single way.

I've been thinking up a few ways to avoid the repetitive conversation loops. Mostly deterrents and subject changes, but distraction and deflecting tends to work.

[Otherwise it just goes on and on, my friend.] I'm hoping in time genuine conversation will surface, as it's almost done a few times.

It takes time to gain their trust even for the most casual conversations. [ She hums, thinking back on her observations. ] Judging by my experience, we're dealing with very paranoid, immature beings. They hurt each other frequently and deliberately, which makes any sort of bond they have with others fragile at best.

[Does this mean yes, he has to keep engaging with them because ugh. Fine.]

I was told to put myself in their shoes. [For once, there's a tine of amusement to his voice, as well as a creasing of his brow. He fidgets, smoothing his sweater down and looking around.] Perhaps I should act more self-centered, then. Take less requests and more time for myself.

It's not a bad idea. This is a marathon, bloop. Not a sprint. [ It was easier with an AI between her and the residents, but this is better in the long run even if it takes more emotional work. ]

I suppose we better head to our very first therapy session, then.

Right, so let's go then. I'm so excited. [The strongest sarcasm as he offers her his arm. He's learning a few things, bit by bit.]

[ She does take it, more for his sake than anything. ] You'll do just fine, dear. I know it.
