DAY 425 — Morning Greeting
[ Those who've been here longer may expect a snarky, uninterested AI right now but the voice coming through is probably only familiar to a few of you. It's accompanied by a video of a woman only those same few may recognise - the curtain has been drawn back. Say hello to the Wizard. ]

Good morning... prisoners.

My name is Mary. Some of you already know me. Some of you I've already talked to quite a bit, though you probably didn't know it was me at the time. We have a lot to discuss. I value your patience.

Yesterday, an event happened that has been a long time in preparation. Years, longer than any of you have been here but for all those preparations, it was only partially a success. You know me as your captor, perhaps as one responsible for programming the Wardens that keep you here and while that is true, that isn't the whole truth. You see, I've been trying to liberate you. I've worked undercover with the Dome Project for a long time in order to accomplish this and yesterday the moment of action came.

Unfortunately, I failed. I was able to steal the simulation that makes up your world, this world but I was not able to bring your physical forms with me. Don't worry - they're quite safe where they are but while you are no longer in prison, you are still imprisoned. At the moment, there's little I can do to change that without drawing the attention of the very people who wants to keep you in this dome for the rest of your lives. I don't ask for forgiveness, but perhaps patience. I do care about you deeply, dearhearts.

I'm sure this is confusing. I will do my best to answer any questions you may have, but one thing I can say right now - this is not a prison. There will be no rules, no requirements. If you need something, tell me or my colleague and it will be provided to you in due time. You are perhaps not free, but you are free to govern yourself as you see fit. I wouldn't dream of knowing how to do it better.

Thank you for your time.

It's been moved, because I stole it. [ She smiles. ] You're new here, aren't you? Ah, yes. Arrived just yesterday, you poor thing.

Not really enough time to feel the relief of being freed from the shackles of being a prisoner, to... not being a prisoner while still being inside of a prison.

What's stopping you from saving our bodies and returning us to our realities?

Isn't it obvious? [ Didn't she already say it? Humans can be so difficult to read. ]

I mean aside from the entities who want us to stay here.

What is physically stopping you? I've found out that there was an instance where people were able to wake up, go to the place where our bodies are being stored. From what I understand it's going to be difficult.

Is there anything we can do from inside here?

None of this is something you need to worry about. I made the system. Explaining how it works in a way that you would understand would take such a long time, you'd all be long dead by the time I finished.

I know what I'm doing, dearheart.

I don't doubt you know what you're doing. In fact I assume as the architect for this system you'd know what you're doing.

But I do have three PHDs in physics, Computer science and engineering, and I also spent a year as a professor sixty years in the past so I know it's possible to present complex ideas in a way that the laypeople can understand.

You'd be surprised at what we 'dearhearts' can understand if you give us a chance.

It's very cute of you to offer, sweetie, but you wouldn't even be able to comprehend my real name.

Are you... are you not familiar with the concept of ah... what do you call it... alien life?

That's the point. You're assuming, as an alien, we mere humans can't understand.

Even if I can't pronounce your name, which is a little bit of a cliche where I come from, doesnt mean I can't comprehend it.

We are communicating, so the exchange of knowledge and ideas should be as simple as having a dialogue.

Also, the term "old one" doesn't mean any thing to you, does it? [As he invokes lovecraft.]

Old one, a term for a deity or other ancient, powerful supernatural entity. This term is often used in fiction, primarily in fantasy and horror fiction. [ She smirks. ] I don't know if I should be flattered or insulted.

We are communicating right now because I've done my homework. I've created an environment where this is possible. That is not equivalent with you, a person who's barely been here for a day, to have even the slightest chance of even beginning to comprehend my language, my culture, my way of creating this incredibly complex code that allows you to breathe and have a heartbeat right now.

Probably neither.

You're concerned that someone like me would just make too many mistakes? Sounds reasonable.

[Maybe a little condescending.]

Tell me, are you going to make an effort to allow us to learn these things about you, furthering interpersonal relationships with us, and instilling faith in your leadership?

Like I said, I'm not your leader. You lead yourselves, however you may see fit. [ There's no real point in gaining someone's trust when you don't really need that trust to do your job. ]

But if you'd like to talk, I'll be available from time to time.

Then if that's the case, what do you think about producing a system that allows everyone to get what they need without a request?

It shouldn't be that hard to develop a system which automatically produces something like say, a specific videogame, or a type of food that isn't available. A replicator. Like Star Trek.

That would make fulfilling requests much easier.

I think for someone who barely has had time to unpack, you sure are full of time consuming and unnecessary requests.

You already have a plethora of games, movies, books, food, drink, activities and pleasures available to you, from many places and times on Earth, as well as a few more exotic if that isn't enough for you. I'd suggest you take your time to widen your horizons with those before asking for more, Mr Palmer.

Now, if you'll excuse me. I have more important matters to attend.

What I'm saying doesn't have anything to do with me. I'm concerned about the needs of everyone else.

I can get by with what I've got, and heck, if this were an actual prison, I'd be okay there too.

It was also a suggestion. Something to consider. [He shakes his head. He's actually getting a little annoyed.]

It's endearing that you're thinking about your fellow residents, but have you actually spoken to them about their experience here? Or are you taking on a leadership position without consulting those who have been here much, much longer than you?

It's curious.

I'm evaluating the situation as I see it. And yes, it's based on as much information as I've gained in two days. Less than.

That doesn't mean the suggestion itself wouldn't be warranted.

The suggestion would carry more weight if you actually did your homework first. This isn't my first day on the job, sweetie.

Oh I'm sure you're very experienced.

I apparently have quite a bit of homework, so if you'll excuse me I'd like to try avoid getting more.
