Day 414 / Open action
Jack's out and about today but he's starting to like Mistletoe Days less and less the longer he's here. And especially just now – given the current delicate state of his blue-band relationship, getting caught by a bot today just seems like it'll be asking for trouble!

Nevertheless, he will inevitably get caught. A man can't live without his coffee, and he's determined to make up for his binge drinking over the last couple of days (or twenty years) by getting back into his early morning swim routine.

He's kind of looking for Ianto too. A little too nervous to actually call him and get this talking thing started, more kind of hoping he'll just run into him and – well. Things will just happen.

((OOC: Decided to put this in a separate post for easier navigation on potentially long threads!))

((Note: NSFW happenings in the Ianto thread (surprise surprise!!!) ))

He watches Aidan carefully for a moment, because he knows how much a burnt mouth can hurt, and okay he might also be putting off answering, just a little bit. Or working out how to answer.

"Uh. Things are a little rocky, actually. That fictional future they threw us into had... quite an impact on me and Ianto."

He'll be fine, he's made of tougher stuff than this. He'll find a popsicle or something to suck at later and it'll all be good.

"Ah, shit... 'm sorry to hear that. Seems like it messed a lot of us up."

Him and Rebecca had definitely faded and fizzled over the years, even if it was an amicable breakup.

Having been even more typically self-absorbed than usual over the last couple of days (and having mainly talked since with Kitty, who at least had a relatively happy future with Chekov, and Spike, ditto with Ianto) Jack hasn't even really thought about the fact that other people may have been messed up by it too, and it makes him re-evaluate for a moment.

"You too, huh?" He knew about Aidan and Rebecca's fizzled relationship in the future, of course, but he hadn't considered how that might have affected their present. "How are things with Rebecca?"

"I dunno. I mean, we're fine now, I think but... who knows. If we're stuck here forever, I've no doubt that's exactly what'll happen. We weren't th' only ones strugglin' with it either."

Alex comes to mind but that's private and he's not sure Jack even knows the grumpy doctor.

"How bad was it for you?"

"A lot of it does seem inevitable, doesn't it?" he agrees wearily. "If we do end up stuck here forever."

He doesn't know Alex in the present. He knows of him and has been aware of broadcasts he's made, but their paths have never really crossed. Presumably they must have at some point in those fictional twenty years, but any memory of it is fuzzy and grainy and he certainly wasn't aware enough of him to know what he was going through there.

So he lets the comment about other people go and focusses on the question about himself, which is easy enough since it's all he's been thinking about for the last forty-eight hours or so.

"Pretty bad." He shrugs. "Well, about as bad as they can be, really. We got to the point where we couldn't be in the same room without yelling at each other, and afterwards - afterwards it's not been so different, really."

"Shit... that's bad. I'm so sorry, man."

As much as he's been not-so-secretly crushing on Jack, his and Ianto's relationship is one that's stood out to Aidan as being done right. He only really knows Ianto in passing but from the outside it looks like they have a good thing going, even with weird vampire add-ons.

"You're still mad at each other?"

"Yeah," he says heavily, with a small, sad smile of gratitude at the commiserations.

He shrugs. "I don't know. Perhaps not so much mad as just frustrated? Seems like we've just lost the ability to communicate with each other - if we ever had it in the first place. Makes sorting out the issues those twenty years threw up at us feel rather impossible."

"I get that." He frowns. "I'm no expert on relationships or whatever, but... you can't let this get you down, alright? Then you're just lettin' 'em win."

Them being the wardens, of course. He doesn't have a set solution here but it seems like such a waste.

It's exactly the right advice to give. Jack's chin goes up, defiance written all over him.

"Oh, believe me, I'm not going to let them win. I've worked too hard at this to walk away now. If we can get through the Spike thing, we can get through anything!" The slightest of pauses. "Well, this is a bit about Spike too, to be fair."

Aidan quirks a brow — he doesn't know Spike, but instinctually doesn't like the guy. Not that he's one to judge who people end up in bed with but there was a lot of biting not that long ago and people seem to forget that way too soon.

"Yeah? What'd that jerk do?"

"Nothing!" Surprisingly quick to defend Spike, especially after that talk with him, because he may be hurting but even he is aware that not much of this is actually Spike's fault. Not intentionally, anyway.

He shrugs. "Nothing except be perfect and romantic and easy to talk to and everything else Ianto wants."

That's frustrating. It's so much easier to handle being mad about something if you can at least pin it to a person. Aidan sighs, shifting his weight and feeling very much like maybe he shouldn't dig in too deep into this. Of course, he can't actually help himself.

"D'ya... you think Ianto likes 'im better?"

"Right now?" His jaw tightens. "I'd say it's pretty much a dead cert."

He winces in sympathy - that's no good. That's really terrible actually and he's not sure he wants to soothe Jack with empty reassurances right now. Seems false, especially since he doesn't quite understand the full situation.

"'m sorry, man... real sorry. This sucks."
