413 - action, open and closed
[ OPEN ACTION - AROUND THE DOME ]

[ It's an errand day. Nothing special, really, expect that today Spike's loading up on more than the usual cigarettes-whiskey-bloodbags that have become his usual shopping list. He can also be found at Bull's Eye, picking up extra linen and towels, stopping by the actual frozen food section of the grocery store where they keep the frozen food that isn't blood, adds a pack of coffee to the pile. Almost like he's preparing for less an overnight guest and more something permanent. Shit hit the fan and for once he's not the one to blame.

He'll take his time, so there's plenty of chances for people to stop and say hi. ]

[ CLOSED TO JACK ]

[ It's later that evening when he tracks down Jack at some bar. Maybe it's the first bar he checked, or the third, but there's an unmistakeable determination in this search. Almost like he's looking for someone to punch some sense into. ]

Figures I'd find you here.

It almost sounds like flirting when you ask. [Maybe she just thinks the "Sheriff" thing would be hot in the right context.

And she knows he's teasing and this is a dangerous path for them, but after the visit to the future it's been on her mind and kind of pushed to the side with personal issues to work out first.]

Ideally, the Defense Force never needs to step into inter-inmate issues. I want all our focus being about working together against the wardens. ...And then more ideally we win and it goes away. I didn't miss it at all. [The last bit is softer and she hadn't entirely meant to say it but she adds some context.] Um, in the future thing.

You know me, I'm not great with authority. [ So he's going to steer clear of the legality of the Force in the first place, instead doing that observational deal on another thing he's noticed. ]

Have to wonder though... seems like some of you are in it just to be members of a club. Feel a bit important.

It's definitely that too. [No hesitation in admitting it. Back in the beginning that's exactly the value she saw in it.] Not the important part. I mean...I don't know, it might be the important part for someone. [Jack maybe? That's not the kind of validation she needs. For her that comes in times of vulnerability, not power.] I just missed my team. [Something in her expression or the way she says it might communicate "family" more than team. That's what it was to her.]

When Gino started it I never thought it would amount to anything, but I figured there might be enough of us who felt like me that it was worthwhile just for making us feel connected to something. Each other. Anything. Hope. Structure. [She shrugs.]

We never became anything like the X-Men, [it's not a family] but by the time I got voted in I figured we should take a shot. Try to make it something where we were focused on getting out as a team. People are stronger together.

[ Honestly, he's mostly thinking about Jack. Kitty seems to be serious about the cause, reminds him of Buffy from time to time, but Jack... maybe Jack just likes the excuse to bark orders, feel like a big man in a place where no one's top dog. Not really. ]

Except it's not all of us together, isn't it? You have be a joiner. [ That part's fine, really. That's the way it usually goes and she can probably tell from the nonchalance in his voice that he's thinking out loud, observing rather than criticising. ]

What do you even do there, in your clubhouse? I know Rebecca talks about hacking like it's some kind of magic spell out of here, but that doesn't sound right.

Well, yeah, but it's kind of that or force people to do it which doesn't seem better. [She gets what he's saying. And she has wondered if she should relax their interview process. Maybe eliminate it for the investigative section or make it more of a getting to know the person thing. So many things are hold overs from older systems and as the prison changes it needs to change and it's just not always a priority to think about. It just seems to happen so rapidly. The force has existed less than a year and it's on its third leader the population of the prison and the force has fluctuated greatly in that time and their mission has changed. She'd made some things stricter because there had been untrained people putting themselves in harm's way for the force and getting hurt under Suzaku so she wanted to reduce that possibility by knowing they had a certain amount of experience. But then she realized she had to push past some of her own conceptions about non-powered people in those positions.]

Mmm...lots of recording things especially things the wardens say and do, trying to find patterns, brainstorm strategies to try against them. Hacking could be something. AI wardens. Virtual prison. There's definitely a heavy tech aspect there. But it could be magic or logic or brawn. Combinations. If we knew we would be doing it.

You're welcome, you know. To join. Keep us in check.

[ And there it is. He figured she would've learned by now but apparently not — at least he snorts out in amusement rather than take it the wrong way. ]

Join you? You're kidding, right? I don't need a members card to help people.

[ And he has, you know. He's fought off raptors - quite a bit during the last attack - and he's helped in smaller ways that he wouldn't even really consider helping because uuugh shut up he's a cool guy he doesn't cheer on people's quest for love and acceptance. Your mum. ]

I know. Just saying. [She doesn't intend to push for it. Just letting him know the door would be open.]

So, how was the future for you? Any surprises?

Nah. [ He shrugs. ] How many surprises can you really get when you're immortal?

Twelve. You can have exactly twelve surprises as an immortal.

It's cute that someone who just got out of her terrible teens thinks she knows a thing about what eternity is really like.

You would know. [ Well, he's got his smokes and toilet paper. ] Well, I got a relationship to save. Later, Kitty-cat.
