Day 412 The rewind
So that...happened.

I've been here for awhile and for those of you who are on the newer side of things, I wish I had some keen insight for you, but that's just one of the games they play. It was kind of a remix of some of their old ones. [She's seen people remember more future before and seen people think they were connected to others in new ways. She had a husband for a day once before.] I think it's just important to remember who you are without their toying and lean on people when you need to. We're in this together.

I don't think what we saw was a real future even if parts of it seemed like they were. There were some conflicting outlooks. Of course, that hasn't stopped me from trying to remember exactly how we overthrew them in mine. [It hasn't stopped her from thinking about a lot of things it brought up.]

Anyway... [She hopes you're all okay. She would have been better at saying that yesterday when it was still twenty years from now. So, she just ends the feed there and you might find her out and about looking particularly thoughtful. Maybe absently walking through solid objects including you! As one does.]

[Action | Closed to Chekov]
[Before her broadcast or any other calls there is just a girl waking up next to a boy. Everything feels right at first. She snuggles closer and the details don't feel important. Are they still in the future? Was yesterday a dream or an experiment? It doesn't matter yet. She's only half awake and warm and comfortable.]

Hey, so, how are things? [Concerned but also unsure how to ask if yesterday ruined his relationships for real.]

Need a coffee? [Code for "let's talk."]

Exactly. [He reaches to refill his cup, and glances up at her with a dry twist of his lips.]

At least you understand that. I can't help wondering if the AIs knew what they were doing that day they paired me off with you and Ianto off with Spike. [A beat, and then he gestures vaguely with the cup.] No offence to Chekov or anything. I just mean, you seem to understand me so much better than Ianto does.

Well, strong emotions can confuse things. I used to think I understood Reid really well. At this point he's probably the biggest mystery to me in the dome. Or at least it feels like it.

I wouldn't give the narratives they write for us too much credit. But they probably do know they'll mess with our heads.

Oh, they mess with our heads all right. [Grimly, before taking a long sip of vodka, blinking slowly at the heat as it goes down. It helps, a little.] It's like, they give - and then they take away. As if things weren't complicated enough without their little games.

And then they have the audacity to say the bands and rules are all for our own good, to stop things getting too complicated!

[She and Jack really are on the same page a lot of the time. At the risk of thinking of Reid again this does remind her a lot of the things she was saying the day they broke up for the third or fourth but also last time.]

The part where it's for our own good really is just salt in the wound. It was nice believing for a day that all the games were over.

It was, wasn't it? [He stares out into space for a moment, finally dwelling on something about yesterday that wasn't Ianto-related. (Except it was, because everything revolved around Ianto.)]

But then, even then, they still won. Trapped here forever - it'd be just like another one of their little games, just played long-term instead of only for a day.

I think it was easier for me. I mean, I didn't like seeing everyone else going through it and I definitely could have used more space, more stimulation, more something. But I didn't have anywhere else to go. No one to get back to. This is all just second chance time here. And even if I had been able to go home with someone I would have been even more different than I ever have before. The only mutant. One of only two people who have been kidnapped to a multidimensional prison. The only person from my world. I probably would have had to hide those things too. It might have been the happiest possible ending for me at this point. [Which is kind of sad even though it was a good day for her. It was hurting so many of the people around her.]

[Oh Kitty. Break his heart, why don't you? He doesn't have anyone to go back to either, but even though he's just as unique as she is, he's never seen that as a barrier to feeling a part of a community. Perhaps because he's had longer to get used to the idea of being the only one who's seen what he's seen, of being alone in that.]

I didn't know you felt like that. [Slowly, softly, because it's all he can think of to say.]

[She looks at that expression on his face and hears that tone of voice.] I have a feeling my speech about how lucky I am didn't sound the most uplifting. [Probably because it's not. It is a collection of tragedy that make her uniquely suited for an otherwise very depressing style of living.]

Really not. [He reaches for her hand against, because how can he not offer comfort in the form of physical contact in the face of all this?]

You shouldn't have to hide who you are. People have accepted you for who you are here; why shouldn't you be able to be open about who are you outside this prison too?

[She squeezes his hand.] Here we're all from different worlds. I'd sound crazy in a world where no one has powers or wasn't used to interdimensional hopping. It just depends on where I guess and the consequences for...being me.

Do you talk about being immortal at home?

Uh. [Suddenly cagey] No?

[Kinda losing the moral high ground there.]

But I do talk a lot about respecting people's rights and differences and so on? ]Trying to make up for it.]

Sorry. [Absolutely hugging her back.] Perhaps I've been here so long I'm getting complacent about people being accepting.

Or perhaps it's the twenty years that happened yesterday. It's hard to remember that didn't actually happen.

I know the feeling. Back home I expected people to fear and hate me for being a mutant and I was never really let down. Here is very different. Maybe it could be like this other places. [But she thinks everyone being a fish out of water helps.]

The twenty years put a lot of things in perspective.

There are places, you know. Places where anything goes and nobody gives a damn whether you've got mutant powers or four arms or fish gills or anything!

I guess it depends on whether they're places you'd actually want to go.

How would I find those places unless someone else from here knew them and wanted to go too? I don't think I'd want to lose everyone at once. Chekov invited me to his world. I might blend in a little with aliens everywhere.

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

Well, you do have people who could take you places, if we could just get out of here. [People who have wriststraps that in the real world can at least call for transport, even if they can't hop through time and space like they used to.]

But that sounds perfect. If the aliens in his reality are anything like those in mind, I imagine you'd blend right in. Most of them probably wouldn't even realise you weren't totally human!

[Thinking about her going off with Chekov and him never seeing her again is not a particularly pleasant idea, but he'd be the first to declare that she deserves a happy future with someone who loves her, if she can get it!]

[She doesn't love that thought either. No more Jack or Ianto? That isn't okay. And at this point she'd miss basically anyone who has been here awhile even if they never talk. It's strange to think of never seeing someone like Tieria again. They are faces she's seen for around a year or less depending on how long they've been around. But it feels longer somehow. There are still people she thinks about in the stabilizer. How would this be different?]

I haven't heard him talk much about special abilities, but maybe we just need to talk about those things. It could be they just haven't come up. It's not really something to worry about right now anyway.

[Perhaps they could all keep in touch. Some of them have time and dimension-hopping abilities, after all. Perhaps they could have reunions once a year, pop in and see each other's worlds after hearing so much about them!]

No, not exactly relevant until we have even the faintest inkling of a way out here. [A not-very-hopeful quirk of an eyebrow.] You have any memory at all of how we did it in that future? Every time I try and think about it my brain goes kind of fuzzy.

Mmm, I know the Defense Force was involved, but unless I was thinking directly about something that day or it was in the process of happening it's just a blur.

Yeah. I guess that's to be expected, really, since it wasn't actually real and even if it was it's not something they'd want us to be able to remember!

Not to mention the fact that it didn't even get us anywhere except from away from their quirky 'event' days. In some ways, I'd almost rather have stayed as we are. At least like this there's some hope that we might find a way out one day.

It was...limiting the way it was. I had a better time of it than most people, but I'm not sure how well I'd really handle it. [Maybe they just wanted her to feel content.]
