Day 412 The rewind
So that...happened.

I've been here for awhile and for those of you who are on the newer side of things, I wish I had some keen insight for you, but that's just one of the games they play. It was kind of a remix of some of their old ones. [She's seen people remember more future before and seen people think they were connected to others in new ways. She had a husband for a day once before.] I think it's just important to remember who you are without their toying and lean on people when you need to. We're in this together.

I don't think what we saw was a real future even if parts of it seemed like they were. There were some conflicting outlooks. Of course, that hasn't stopped me from trying to remember exactly how we overthrew them in mine. [It hasn't stopped her from thinking about a lot of things it brought up.]

Anyway... [She hopes you're all okay. She would have been better at saying that yesterday when it was still twenty years from now. So, she just ends the feed there and you might find her out and about looking particularly thoughtful. Maybe absently walking through solid objects including you! As one does.]

[Action | Closed to Chekov]
[Before her broadcast or any other calls there is just a girl waking up next to a boy. Everything feels right at first. She snuggles closer and the details don't feel important. Are they still in the future? Was yesterday a dream or an experiment? It doesn't matter yet. She's only half awake and warm and comfortable.]

Hey, so, how are things? [Concerned but also unsure how to ask if yesterday ruined his relationships for real.]

Need a coffee? [Code for "let's talk."]

Is it? We're not even certain this is a prison for the reasons we're told it is. We could be a culture of data to absorb as a past-time for somebody. Mice in a maze, waiting to see which ones make it to the cheese and just how they get around the tough obstacles in their way.

Nothing's a certain here. As someone who gets screwed over by the stabilizer for jokes? I should know.

I tend to think we're here to be experimented on. I could name so many people better to remove from my timeline than me for forever prison.

But, Peter, if you start from trust nothing, everything is possible, and nothing can be verified then where do you go from there? It's not that I don't agree with all of that in theory. It's just more of an existential crisis than an action plan. [It feels like a place to give up from rather than get to work toward.] At some point you have to make a hypothesis and test.

You're missing my point, which is that they may very well be trying to motivate us just as often as they appear not to be. If they're observing us as mice, they want to see what we'll do - there's no certainty of what we'll have to do, but we know what we'd rather be doing. Getting out of the maze all together.

Do we have hypothesis? Is the DF doing tests? Is anyone?

True.

Still working on a hypothesis that holds water. Reid is the only one I know working on it alone. [Which doesn't mean others aren't. Just that they haven't mentioned it.] I'm not sure where he's at.

You or someone else from the DF might want to keep tabs on what's going on with Reid, then. Incase you know, he goes missing and his work gets lost or something else happens.

[You're the DF you should have your fingers in all the pies, but he's trying not to say that since he's not on the DF. And last time it didn't go so well when he made suggestions.] I'd do it but again, I feel like a tourist here waiting for my bus ride back to stasis.

Well, that's... [awkward.] That's up to Reid. He's always been welcome to work with us in whatever way he wants. [She reminded him when he left and they have a pretty open door policy. She can't remember the last time they turned someone down from joining the team. She's pretty sure it's never happened with someone wanting to join the investigative division.] I mean, he was one of the leaders. He chose to work separately. I'm not going to spy on him or force him to share his work, but he knows the door's open.

Why do you feel like a tourist?

Because I have come and gone a lot of times? To stasis? Pods? Whatever land is on the other side of the screen.

Anyway, I'll let you get back to work.

I wasn't really working. You know I'm a person too, right? [She smiles a little, still feeling a touch confused by this conversation though that might have cleared it up somewhat. Did he think it was a Defense Force announcement? Had she just become so synonymous with it for some people it's all they see? Funny what can happen in a few months.]

And you're not a tourist. You're as much one of us as anyone else which might be more horrifying than comforting. As much as I'd like all kinds of perks with seniority and an unbroken record of being here longest there are none. We're just all in this together.

I figured you'd be doing some kind of work, it was also a casual out. [He's doing work himself, and he just a little frustrated with the whole strain of conversation.]

I get what you're saying Kitty but until you come and go? It's a different feeling of uncertainty. I had a girlfriend. I wake up for more than just one day in a row and it's almost five months later and she's gone. I expect to blink and lose ten more weeks of my life at any moment. So I'm trying to just do what I can while I can and since you lead the Force, you're the one who gets my thoughts. If I should not share them, let me know because I can do that too - I'm not on it so also forgive me for not knowing what's an official broadcast and what isn't. Maybe you guys should have a little filter that pops on when it is. And or a mascot leading us into commercial breaks.

[She doesn't respond to the part about waking up and finding his girlfriend gone because 154 days ago she woke up from a normal sort of sleep to find Reid gone and all the king's horses and all the king's men never managed to put her heart back together again. Not until yesterday with an extra 20 years added to those 154 days. It's true she doesn't know what it's like from the other side, but she's pretty sure all of it just sucks a lot. She feels for him for the girlfriend and the uncertainty. This place is just hard and some topics never get easier to address.]

Hey, Peter, share away. [She gives him a concerned look, unsure what has him so upset—if it's the situation or her replies or some combination. It doesn't feel like they're connecting well which she'd rather work out. She likes the guy—respects him and has fun with him.] You know the door's open for you too if you want to join, right? You're welcome to. [She knows she's said this before, but maybe it bears repeating.] I mean, I can always take your ideas back and share with others but you could be there helping direct things too. Like I said we're all in this together even if the force is pretty opt-in rather than mandatory.

And like I told you before, groups aren't my thing. [Direct.]

Kitty, I tried to share away twice just now and you dismissed my thoughts both times. [The philosophy joke, the caffeine gag. He took them in better spirits but if you're putting him to the wire he's going to drop the humor.] If I have to wear a badge and come in for DF meetings in order to get my thoughts validated, then never mind. You pretty much told me not to freak out and instead have an action plan. But then you admitted the DF doesn't actively have one, and the only guy who does is flying solo without any help. Forgive me for being blunt, but - we should be farther along than this if we've been around this long.

I know you're a person and I know we all want to live our lives but I'd rather not waste the next twenty years of mine here, waiting out the deaths of all the people I care about back home. [Yeah, he's got his hang ups. And surprisingly, none of them are the Wade things.] I'm frustrated, Kitty. Yesterday, like I said, was mega demoralizing.

I'm sorry if I didn't make you feel heard, but you jumped in without any context. I didn't know you were talking about the defense force until half way through the conversation. [She was trying to keep things a little lighter because of how heavy everything was feeling. She didn't want her friends feeling hopeless in all this.]

And as far as you deciding where we should be at with this after a few months [the mission of the DF has only been defeating the wardens for about half of its time which is less than the full prison time] when you don't even want to participate because groups aren't your thing... I really don't know what to say to that. [It's probably a lot like it would sound if someone yelled at him for bad things still happening in New York City even though he's Spider-Man. But she gets that he's frustrated. That he has a life to get back to with family and friends. She does her best to keep her tone and manner calm and even.]

We're doing the best we can with the nothing we have to work with and the days off for random personality changes and the dwindling team that's about a fourth or less of the size it used to be because people keep disappearing. It's slow and frustrating and possibly hopeless, but we're still trying.

[Did he just say Reid has a plan?]

[No, you said Reid was working on a plan, Kitty.]

I was sharing theories, much like you were - you said yesterday is a game the Wardens pull and I suggested that maybe today is too. That wasn't directed necessarily directed toward the Defense Force, but it's hard to tell when you're addressing us and when you aren't. Again, quirky text overlays may help. [He just mentioned sharing this with her because she's the leader; he figured she'd be open to a contrary opinion every now and then but he's regretting that route all together.]

I'm also not deciding anything. But I am pointing out that you're making the Defense Force feels like the school group you have to be in to be part of any decision around here. I can't comment that we're going absolutely nowhere in 412 days because I don't participate in the group chat? You yourself said there aren't hypothesis that hold water in the DF. And you don't know how Reid's doing with his.

[He sighs, strained.] I understand the Force is dwindling and it's a trying time. But constructive criticism or questioning a line of thought and bringing something up like this to the leader's not an attack. So please don't interpret it as one. [Because this seems defensive and he's not about this life.]

(OOC: Oh! Okay. She just knows he's working on stuff. She has no idea he has a plan. She figures he's doing research like they are.)

[She waits until he's finished.] I don't think it's an attack. I think this is just a conversation we should have started in a different context where we both knew we were having a meeting about the Defense Force. Things got strained before there was any clarity. I'm sorry for the part I played in that. No reason not to move past it to a better situation.

Do you want to meet up and discuss things more fully now? Would it be better later? [Cooling off time?] I'd like to ask you some questions too. You have some information that doesn't line up with mine which is good to know because there is a lot of turn over here and so much of what we all know about things is passed along orally in a tragic game of telephone so it's bound to happen.

[ooc: Action plan was her wording, with hypothesis and theories done by Reid what Peter was referring to. He's not talking about any specific plan.]

By information that doesn't line up with yours, you mean what? I have self-directed set of theories and a red and blue suit. [He's not objecting to a meeting but there really isn't anything he knows that wasn't picked up from Reid's notes, all shared from the Defense Force wealth.] If you're talking about yesterday's source, I haven't gotten through parsing that.

Just some of the minutia of things you mentioned about the force itself that could speak to a larger issues of communication for us. Or for me as the somewhat reluctant face of things. [The X-Men never had to manage public relations. She's great with emergencies and she's found some footing with internal structure even though she has to keep adapting to a changing dome, but ]

But I want to discuss your theories more too. Maybe after you do some parsing? I can bring a white board and coffee?

[That gives him ample time to cool off a bit, shed some frustration from yesterday and work more on his own plan of action. The more of them they have, the better. He should maybe talk to Wade too, check in with Reid. So many things to do that do put an impact on yesterday ever becoming a potential tomorrow.]

I'll uh, let you know when I get through it. You might need to bring a lot of coffee and a really big board.

Deal.

And Peter? [Sincerely.] I am sorry about yesterday.

[Not anything she did yesterday, just the every existence of it. There are things about it that were hard for her because she was so happy and confident and even content in a way that she hasn't been since she was a child. So, today means losing that again. But for others... Well, it's just different when you're dead back home and your world no longer exists either. It's not normally a good thing, but in this context it kind of is. It's liberating in a way. Everything is just coming up second chances instead of missed opportunities. And whether he meant to remind her of that in the process of this conversation or not he did.]
