You wanted to lose your friend? I do not understand.

I didn't want to, but I've been here long enough to know that's what happens. It's inevitable.

I do not believe you should think that way. It hurts very much to lose someone we care about, but giving up or believing there is no point in our connections with them is not the right thing to do. We should always fight for the people we care about, even if we know we will lose them.

Aigis... that's not what I said. This is like — it's like living in the Middle Ages. People died young, then. People will disappear here. If we mourn them every time, eventually it'll crush us.

Oh. I believe I understand. You will not mourn him even a little bit?

[ He pauses, at that. Hesitates, even. It's a weird thing with Nathan. He'll miss other people but Nathan... that was extra. That was time he wasn't ever supposed to have in the first time. ]

I've already lost him once. That time I knew I wasn't going to see him again.

I do not think I understand at all. But I am sorry for your loss, and I am glad it does not hurt too badly.

That's fine. It's not really important right now, anyway. [ He dares a little smile, ready to change the topic. ] So, uhm... how've you been?

I have been well. Thank you for asking. I enjoy patrolling sector six to watch for danger and to keep myself entertained.

It reminds me of home. I find it familiar and I enjoy it for that reason.

Not precisely. The Shadows in Tartarus are more difficult to describe. But fighting them is the familiar part.

I can understand that. That's, uhm. That's why I used to teach, here. It was the closest I got to actually doing my job.

Yes, I believe it must be very much like that. I miss my friends terribly but by doing something so similar to the experiences we shared I am able to feel closer to them.

I think a lot of people use that coping mechanism here. There's not a lot else we can do. [ And while they're on the subject. ]

Hey, Aigis... can I ask you a question? How do you feel about the Defence Force?

[She takes a moment to answer as she thinks but the good thing about Aigis is knowing she will always be completely honest. She doesn't understand lying.]

I believe they are inefficient. Their intentions are good but there are few people as strong or as fast as I am, and no one with my weapons capibilities. They hold me back. In times of danger I prefer to act alone to protect people unless my presence is requested and I conduct most of my patrols alone as well. They are not what I thought they would be when I joined them.

[ He listens quietly, nodding along as she speaks. They share a common opinion, even if he doesn't agree with her for quite the same reasons. They are inefficient. There's a lot that could be done - should've been done a long time ago - that isn't happening. ]

So... if we as a community should work together - and I believe we should - how do you propose we do that?

I believe more needs to be done to teach people to protect themselves. Very few are currently capiblenof protecting themselves from the many threats we face and the Defense Force is rarely able to react in time. [She actually sounds quite confident, as if she's given this plenty of thought before. She can be so bad at daily life that it's easy not to realize she has the potential to be quite a good leader in combat situations. She's done it before.]

Few of my friends at home have any formal weapons training. What's more they are all very young; Ken-san is only eleven years old. But we all placed ourselves in dangerous situations and fought every night. They learned and became strong enough to protect our entire world. I believe everyone here is capiblenof doing the same, but many rely on the Defense Force as an illusion of safety while refusing to learn for themselves as a result. That should change.

I agree.

[ He nods, again feeling like they have the same idea in general even if it doesn't match up entirely on the specifics. ]

We should also have contingency plans in place. Meet-up points, in case of an emergency... holding cells whenever someone forgets who they are and tries to hurt the people around them. There's a lot we could do that the Defence Force should've done a long time ago.

[ And that's partially on him, because he was part of it, but also not entirely on him because he didn't take up a leader position unless pressed to and even then it was mostly if not entirely research. ]

[She nods thoughtfully, eyeing him with those electric, too blue eyes. They can be unnervingly perceptive at times and now is one of those occasions.]

How do you plan on making these changes? You have come to me about this, not the leaders of the Defense Force. Am I correct in thinking you do not believe it is possible to do these things within the current structure of the Defense Froce?

[ He pauses, chewing over the answer. She keeps him in his toes, makes him think about how he phrases things. It's refreshing. ]

I wouldn't go that far. I believe that it's not possible for me to bring this to the leaders of the Defence Force, considering our personal history. I'm sure they can implement change on their own, if they're willing... but even more so I think this should involve all of us, not just a self-elected group.

Are you suggesting I speak to them? [Still thoughtful and deliberate, not quite jumping to any conclusions yet.] I am not sure how much weight my statements will carry with them. I am not close with any of the leaders and I believe they will take my enhanced abilities into account and believe it prevents me from viewing these problems objectively.

Most of all I'm interested in your opinion. I've talked to a few others as well. My concerns aren't really worth much if I'm the only one having them.
