[ day 393 ] video ;;
[ The camera turns on to reveal a very bored looking John Constantine. Complete in that lovely orange jumpsuit. ]

And here I thought I had gotten myself into the good graces again. Fighting the depths of Hell and restoring souls and all that. Good to see the Almighty and forces of Good really do ride that high horse of justice all the way to the bottom of the ocean. [ Not that he's denying his charges. They're all completely true. ] Let me put it to you this way: if the angels thought I was a desperation move, what makes you lot think rehabilitation would actually work?

[ John sighs. ] I don't suppose any of you might know where a sorry sod like me could find a pack of cigarettes. Oh, and, a proper pair of clothes. Orange was never really my color.

All of them, really. [He shrugs.] But they're not all accessible. There aren't any spirits or dead to raise and command, but I could if there were. [Weeell, there are some vampires and there had been a surprisingly sentient zombie once, but he's not so keen on manipulating the kind of dead that he has to live indeterminately with in an underwater prison with.] I can still sense when someone has died. I can manipulate the earth - though that was never one of my strengths. I can kill plants. [And mortals, and not just with the fancy black sword hanging off his hip.]

But... it's more tiring than usual. I feel like I can't do as much as I would be able to if I were back on my own world. [Which sucks, because his powers took a lot out of him back home too.]

Unless you've got some really awesome powers, you'll probably get to keep most of them. Or all of them.

A bit of a necromancer then. [ He makes a mental note to do what he can to keep the kid on his side. Or at least be in the kid's good graces. Which, will be hard, considering John tends to piss off every person he meets. ] Which then brings up the question how one can manipulate the earth if you're in a virtual reality.

[ John casts a glance down at the ankle bracelet. So, it tends to dampen powers then? He'll need to play around with that one a bit later. After he gets some better clothes and a few cigs. ]

Magic isn't always about being awesome. I find the best bits of magic are the small things that you can use to sway something your way. At least that's how I've kept my head on my shoulders this long.

Something like that. Yeah. [As the only living son of Hades, he feels like he's been maybe overcompensated in the powers department. Not that he's complaining.] Would you believe virtual earth works the same as real earth? Our bodies and powers are virtual too, if you really think about it. I try not to.

[Mmhm, mmhm...] Subtle can be awesome. I don't think it would have kept me alive for very long, though. Go big, or go home. [Or get torn apart by a cyclops. Whatever.]

Oh, I can see your point clearly, mate. I just think it's either an elaborate ruse, or just a bloody lie they've sold us. Not much point in putting just your brain in a prison. Seems too risky. [ And just his general distrust! ]

There are the times to go big and go out with a bang! More often or not, though, that is when more people die. [ He sighs. ] I don't suppose you'd believe me if I said I try to keep the body count down.

You're not the first one who has said so. I haven't seen any evidence that it isn't what they say it is. But, the whole thing is kind of over my head. [That doesn't mean he trusts their generous overlords.]

People die. [Not that he doesn't care, but if the Fates have your thread between their blades, there's not a lot he can do about that. He can't feel guilty for not being a hero - he isn't one.] I have no reason not to believe you. I don't even know you.

Skeptical tends to be the best way to go in this life. It helps you cope. [ Unless you just know the truth of it all and can't run away from it. Thankfully, that's not something they need to worry about in Nova. Yet. ]

They do. [ A lot and often. ] Trusting then, are we?

[He can't disagree with a healthy dose of skepticism.]

Trusting? I don't know about that... [Maybe a bit naive. Though there were times it bit him in the ass, and hard.] I just don't think it's fair to judge someone when you hardly know them. [He'd been on the receiving end of unfair judgement most of his known/remembered life. It was unjust.]

Good! You should never fully trust anyone. That's usually how you get yourself into more trouble than its worth. [ And, or dead. ] How would you judge the wardens of this place then? Being a more senior member of our prison.

[He offers up a half-smile. They were on the same page as far as trust. Awesome.] I don't like them. [Especially now.] I wouldn't trust them to give you a straight answer. I wouldn't trust them, period. All the parties and festivals can't make up for a storm destroying everything, or flooding the whole dome. People died. They might blame it on a malfunction or glitch, or whatever, but I don't buy it.

Trusting the ones who hold you captive seems like a rookie mistake. Sounds like some of our fellow inmates make that choice. [ Then again, he tricks people into trusting him all the time. ] Storm? They've got a way to make up weather down here as well?

[ And well, if there was a flood and people died? It seemed like the body couldn't survive without the conscious mind - or soul - after all. ]

I wouldn't blame anyone for feeling differently. Some people are better off here than on their own worlds. [Despite his ire for the wardens and the situation in general, Nico is actually happier here with his new family. And now his sister is here too.]

Yeah. They can do whatever they want with the environment. You could wake up one morning and find everything completely changed, and it'll all be gone the next day.

They must be pretty shite worlds if an underwater prison is better. I'm not holding my breath that its better than mine. [ He figures evil will show up one way or another eventually. ]

Sounds bloody fantastic. It makes one wonder why they don't just kill all the inmates.

Some worlds are pretty awful, yeah. [He frowns. He kind of considers his world one of the crap ones.] There are some people working on finding a way out of here. You could talk to the Defense Force about it.

I don't know. Maybe they really do want to rehabilitate people. Or maybe it's some big experiment.

Some must be worse than others. That golden saying of "someone's got it worse than you." [ How many of those people like to use and break the rules, he wonders. ] Defense Force? That sounds like a bloody superhero team name. Not a fan of tights and cloaks, me.

Rehabilitation can be an experiment within itself.

They let you wear your own clothes, don't worry. [Though he knew at least one of them was a super hero.] You don't have to join, though.

[He squints his eyes. Don't get all enigmatic with him. He gets enough of that back home.]

Not very. Some things have happened - a group was able to see the real prison - but I don't think we're any closer to getting out than we have been.
