Day 389 | Video + Action
[ Video ]

[ By the time Kirk decides to experiment some with the little device, he has managed to ditch the orange prison uniform and get himself into a normal shirt and pants. The jump suit had been humiliating as it was, he wasn't about to go looking for answers still wearing it. Not to mention orange was definitely not his color. ]

Okay, so does anyone want to actually explain this situation to me? Because so far I've gotten the idea that some rogue AI have kidnapped me and I assume everyone else here. Needless to say, I'm taking what they're saying with a grain of salt.

[ Least because many of the more dire charges were, to him, quite justifiable considering most of them were done while saving lives. Some of those lesser ones he really couldn't argue (like cheating, whoops), but some on. This was ridiculous, not to mention where was his due process? ]

And beyond that - please tell me that we can actually get booze in this prison. I have a feeling I'm going to need a drink to absorb all this.

[ In other words, he is freaking out inside but refuses to show it because his James Tiberius Kirk, damn it, and he is extremely salty over this turn of events. Can't he ever just get a normal shore leave? ]

[ Action ]

[ His "invitation" sent, Kirk continued to wander around the prison - mostly Sector 0 and parts of Sector 1 for the moment as it seems, to him, to be a central sort of place for the prison. It's as natural a place to start as any, and regardless of how irritated he was at the situation, his stomach did not care. He found himself taking up some of the street food. Honestly he should have worried more about things they might have put in there, but if he didn't start doing some sort of activity he really would lose it. Eating was good as anything here, helping him to bide his time and keep his patience.

Don't judge him for picking the most homely food he could find - a corndog and fries. ]

I had to keep notes. Commander Spock would be very disappointed if he came here again and I had nothing to share.

The most important thing to know, I think, is that no one has found a way to leave MarinaNova. We made it to the real prison where our bodies are kept once, but no farther.

This is very true. He might even be moved to give praise.

[ We all know how rare that is - the real kind anyways. ]</sub? Well, I'm here now. And we both know how very much I like defying odds.

Possibly. [Chekov gives Kirk a let's-not-get-carried-away look.]

Escaping isn't a matter of odds, Cap--Jim. [Whoever you are.] We are attempting to escape from a simulation from within that simulation. Everything at our disposal is a part of the program that we would need to disrupt.

[ He likes to look on the bright side and believe in impossible things sometimes. Look, it can happen Chekov. Maybe. ]

True, but think about that. It's a simulation. It's a computer program. Sophisticated, yes, but a program. It means there are limits, we just have to find them and push past them.

[ He says it with pure confidence. Sure it wouldn't happen tomorrow, but he knew he'd get back to the Enterprise someday. He could play the long games just fine. ]

[That optimism and confidence sure makes it hard to bring up difficulties presented by the reality of their situation.]

I have had plans. They seemed promising initially, but their flaws have been pointed out to me and I currently have no ideas to pursue. [He can't help but sound a little defeated. There's good reason!] I've been trying to return home for eight-hundred twenty-four days with no success.

[ He clicks his tongue and then whistles, because that is a long time, but - ]

Well, it's good you haven't given up. And failure isn't necessarily a bad thing. We can learn from those attempts, to find the way that works. 'If at first you don't succeed, try, try again', right?

[ He is not one to be dissuaded so easily, Chekov. Up to you if that's a good thing or not. ]

[Chekov doesn't want to discourage Kirk from throwing himself at a seemingly impossible problem, he's just very tired of getting nowhere with his own attempts.]

Most of my trying was in a different prison where failing had very few consequences. Here, I worry about the effect that disrupting the simulation may have on us; I think that experimentation is inadvisable.

[But he's a cautious person. Maybe what they need is someone who has a habit of throwing caution to the wind.]

That's a good point.

[ And it was. There were going to be risks with this. Of course there would be, but.. ]

But, the other option is remaining trapped here and letting them continue to do as they please. And I'm not okay with that. Are you?

No. [He's also not okay with putting other people in potential danger, but that likely goes without saying.]

I should tell you more about the prison before you begin escaping, and it would also be good for you to choose an apartment. I would offer to share mine, but it is in no state to be shared.

[ He's not about to go gallivanting off willy-nilly, but he long ago recognized that while you can try and keep everyone safe... well, sometimes it just wasn't possible. Life didn't work that way, though you could damn well try for it. ]

Do I want to know why, precisely, or just take your word for it?

[There are many reasons that Kirk is a captain and Chekov is not. Kirk can shoulder the burden of making hard decisions and taking actions that could have tragic consequences; Chekov would be paralyzed if faced with such a decision.]

I have had no need to clean it since Lieutenant Commander Data and Ensign Kim left. [A shrug. He's a pretty normal young man in some respects, Kirk. The bachelor pad is in a sorry state.]

[ That was what he signed up for. It took a certain main to do what he did, but he also needed people like Chekov to help him keep his heart. One to many of those hard decisions, and you could lose sight of things. ]

I don't recall either of those names from the Enterprise. Or were they from different ships?

[MarinaNova will be a vacation! There are virtually no hard decisions to be made beyond what to eat for dinner (although the variety of food that the restaurants offer can make that a real struggle).]

Both are from the twenty-fourth century, so you would not have had the opportunity unless you've been traveling time without me. [Don't do that, he doesn't want to miss that.] Data served on an Enterprise, and Harry Kim was on a ship called Voyager.

[ He was in need of a vacation, though prison would not have been his choice of venue. ]

Huh. So this place really can pull from different points in time then. Damn it, what a headache...

[ He never wants to time travel again if he can help it, Chekov, you know he has feelings on that after the whole thing with Nero. ]

Right, no more talk of that. Let's get those drinks.

Different points in time... different universes, I assume. [Look, live with this continuously for a couple years and it stops being a pain in the head. Also? Most people from the future in the prime timeline aren't genocidal maniacs.]

I should tell you that there's a limit to the amount of alcohol that the wardens allow us to drink. They seem to think that our criminal behavior will worsen if we become drunk.
