Day 381 Video/Action: Open

So, we're on day three of whatever this is. And I can't tell you what it's going to be. We've had situations like it before. We've had worse. I'm sure a few of you remember. [There were times the power was off consistently and things got cold and air got thin.] I can tell you being on day three of anything is rare, and I expect something big to follow. Big could be a lot of things.

That means we need to be ready. And when I say "we" I don't just mean the Defense Force. I mean all of us as a community of people. We didn't choose each other and didn't choose this life, but we need to choose each other now. We don't know what's coming or if anything is even coming, but that doesn't change how we should respond—together. We need to be watchful, flexible, and concerned with our neighbors' safety and well being.

The Defense Force is here for that. We have a dispatch line. Call us. We've been tracking this situation since it started. Help all of us out, by helping us get the biggest picture possible for what's happening. It doesn't have to be something life threatening, but definitely call us for that too. It can just be something that's unusual or doesn't make sense. That means a lot of calls, but it's okay. It's part of the job and that doesn't just go today or when I open up a line to everyone. It's every single day and you'll need to know that because we're getting through this. There's going to be a tomorrow and a day after and one after that.

Put yourselves in the best situation you can. Now, we've scouted supplies and we're still doing good, so I want people to make sure households have blankets and warm clothes. It's not something we usually need a lot of here, but it will come in handy if temperatures keep dipping. I am not saying hoard these things. You go, you get just what you need. Because, remember, we're watching out for each other here. If you're running out of a resource vital to you or you need help you call dispatch or me or any force member you know.

You have ideas? Self heating structures, ways to make the food supply stretch if needed, secure crafts that might be able to make it to the surface if we could get through the dome, anything that's going to prepare for the common good? Talk to us. Let us help work on those plans, so they can get accomplished faster.

Keep each other's spirits up. Talk to people. Listen. Do something generous or kind just because you can. Just because we're not going to fall apart when they make the lights flicker. We're stronger than that if we stand together. If we don't let fear paralyze us. If we don't limit our thinking or go selfish. We're Marina Fucking Nova, and the wardens can't break us.

[She didn't expect to go on like that. She had a few bits of sensible precautions and reminders to deliver, but it just got more impassioned as it went on. She cares. She cares more than she usually shows. She cares more than she even realizes. These people—even the ones she hasn't met yet are her people now. Her protectorate. Her community. Her team. Her family.]

[ACTION : OPEN]

[She can be found doing a careful sweep of the prison with a notepad and everything so she can record any details that might be useful. She's going to go through all of the facilities while she's at it.]

That's something, though. The situation was similar at home. [He smiles humorlessly.] I'm banking on not living long enough to have to figure out what happens after.

Have you considered taking up smoking? That was kind of my safety net.

I picked it up about two years ago. It's terrible.

You should try quitting. So much worse.

Did that, too. It's an endless cycle of suffering. [This is oddly refreshing. Is that weird?] Did anything else take the edge off of surviving the apocalypse?

Mmm...my team. My husband. [Honest answers. Maybe too honest considering how the husband one makes her feel now.] Couldn't afford to drink much. Had to stay sharp.

I'm sorry that you lost them—your team and your husband. [No surprise that she was married. Relationships move fast when life is dangerous.] Or maybe it's more accurate to say that they lost you.

Probably a little of both depending on who it is specifically. [Some of them died before her after all.] But thanks. I see them sometimes. Versions of them. Here.

What do you mean? They've been imprisoned here too?

There's a guy here named Logan who is from a different reality than me, but he looks a lot like the guy who taught me how to fight. Same name. [Different codename.] Not sure how much of the past is the same. [But then neither would he with his memory loss.] There have been others. Briefly.

Of all of the possible universes out there, I have to wonder why whoever's orchestrating this would want multiple versions of the same one represented. [To torment them, probably.]

Sounds unpleasant, anyway. I wouldn't want to see anyone from home here, much less a slightly different version of one of them.

Kind of depends on their goals. As stated it must be because that's where the criminals are. [But she doesn't even remotely sound like she believes that's the reason.]

No one? Really?

None of this has anything to do with crime. [He's certain, fight him.]

Really. [That's an incredibly obvious lie.] No one who'd want to see me, at least.

I don't think so either. [Not that her guesses for what it is about are any rosier.]

You seem like an affable enough kind of guy. Why wouldn't anyone in the world want to see you? [Should she feel bad or suspicious?]

No? [He'd press, but this isn't a particularly good topic to explore in the midst of the dome going to hell. Very distressing.]

Thanks for doubting my unlikeability. [He hesitates, weighing the pros and cons of trusting her enough to say something more substantial. The situation in Kitty's universe doesn't seem that different, in some ways, from that in his own. Maybe she'll understand.] Things have been... complicated, lately. More than they were before. We knew who to fight when it was us against the cylons, but... [He runs a hand through his hair. It's hard to contextualize what he did when he has told her virtually nothing about what was going on.]

The cylons destroyed the twelve Colonies—our homes. Reduced a population of fifty billion to approximately forty-five thousand civilians, took the entire Colonial Fleet down to two battlestars. We ran for two years and found a planet to settle. They found us again and the occupation began. I didn't resign from my government position after they came... I thought I could help from the inside—help the human resistance—and I did, but no one knew. They didn't believe that I wasn't a willing cylon collaborator. No one believed me. They didn't have any reason to, really, and there were executions after we had to abandon the planet... [This is a lot of talking and he isn't sure that he's making much sense. Just trying to sketch out what happened is harder than it should be.] It's fine. [It's abundantly not fine.] It worked out. Pardons were issued, I was just recommissioned, right before I came here... but people don't forget. I was slipping the resistance information, some of them know that now, but what everyone remembers is me working for the enemy.

[He looks at Kitty expectantly. What he expects, he doesn't know. Maybe that all came out as insane rambling and she's just going to think that he's crazy.]

[If this wasn't a video conversation she might have just stepped forward and hugged him. He seems like a guy who could use a hug. And she believes his story. Why not? Why tell it at all if he really was with the enemy force? No one else is here to disagree anyway. He could have created a simpler narrative. Besides, she learned a few things from Reid about profiling. One upon a time he called her a natural too. Then again he said a lot of things to her once upon a time.]

You did the right thing even though it was hard and thankless. [She knows a lot about that kind of act.] That never goes unpunished, but it makes it a lot easier to live with yourself.

[So many hugs are needed.

While not everyone from his universe would agree with his version of events, Felix isn't lying. He occasionally believes in an interpretation of the past that's somewhat divorced from reality (not so much in this instance), but he always tells the truth that he remembers.]

I tried to. It wasn't the noble thing, and it wasn't enough. We still lost over eight-thousand people. Eight-thousand, one-hundred and fifteen. [But who's counting.] I'd think better of myself if I'd spent the occupation in the detention center.

You regret it then? Even though you might not have been able to do anything from there?

I can't regret the end result. [Just everything else, including surviving the experience.] You sound like you've something similar. Something thankless.

That's something. [Maybe not much, but you need everything you can get.]

Mm, back home I was a mutant fighting against other mutants for humans. I was usually hated by everyone who wasn't doing the exact same thing.

[info]kitty_has_claws

Probably the humans. It wasn't as personal for the other mutants. They were definitely more afraid.

And you still sided with the humans. Why did you stay loyal to people who hated you out of fear?

I'm Jewish. It's a culture and a religion. I grew up hearing stories about World War II when my people among others became scapegoats for all the problems in one of the countries. And they started going out, and rounding us up for mass genocide, human experimentation and forced labor. It was wrong then, and it is wrong against the humans too.

And... My parents were human. They murdered them. I would never fight for Apocalypse. [If you're getting the feeling she hates Apocalypse you're not wrong.]

[This is all very uncomfortable, and it's not just because of the mention of mass genocide. If Kitty was in his universe, she'd likely be as against cylons (also genocidal, also the murderers of basically everyone's parents) as she is against this Apocalypse character. She certainly wouldn't have much sympathy for people who collaborated with the cylons, however good their intentions. Maybe she would've been right there with the other people who wanted to throw Gaeta out of an airlock.

Or maybe he's wrong. Regardless, he's visibly uneasy even if he won't verbally acknowledge as much.]

There must be a reason for other mutants to side with Apocalypse. They can't be in it for the murder.
