[It's only your third time to be deployed out into battle. Your Fafner to some degree still feels foreign, despite the extensive training you've completed. It'll still take awhile before you're fully acclimated to when you connect* with the mecha directly through your nervous system; it feels akin to an electric chair, but it is imperative for you and the Fafner to perfectly sync as one being. You also are psychologically and emotionally linked via Crossing with the other pilots who have been sent out.

Initially the brilliant gold of the alien enemy, maybe one hundred meters tall, if not more, leaves you in awe. Even though you've faced Festum before (granted, only a couple other times), you're practically frozen in place. You can feel yourself begin to panic as it draws nearer, close to invading your mind.

. . .That is, until, from not far behind, a powerful laser strikes. The Festum is engulfed by a massive black orb. Similar to a black hole, the alien blinks out of existence altogether.]

Are you all right?

[You turn to see a red apparition of Kazuki beside you within your cockpit. He's at ease, wanting to check up on you.]

You're doing just fine. Just remember your training, and the times you've been sent out before. You aren't alone. All of us are fighting with you.

[Kazuki's appearance fades again as the battle continues. You're able to calm down thanks to his reassurance. Even so, you continue to remain linked with both he and everyone. If you need anything, all you need to do is speak up.

Soon, you're back in the hangar and exiting the pod-shaped cockpit, along with four other pilots, and Kazuki, who then approaches you.]

How are you feeling? Let's hurry on and go for our check-up.
_______

[ peace ]

Welcome to Rakuen. Feel free to take a seat anywhere.

[Kazuki says cheerfully from behind the counter. The air is filled with the scent of food, and the ambiance of the café is warm and friendly. A number of others are seated throughout, chatting amongst each other, while enjoying their meal. This isn't the true Rakuen, back on Tatsumiya Island, Kazuki's homeland, but Watatsumi Island's version of the café isn't too bad.

A boy, no older than maybe 4, soon approaches the table. In his small hands he carefully holds a tray with a glass of ice water on it. He lifts it up to offer it to the guest before returning to Kazuki, looking quite pleased with himself and expresses as such. Kazuki chuckles and lightly ruffles the boy's sandy blonde hair.]

Good job, Soushi. You're doing very well.

[It isn't too long before Kazuki goes to take the person's order. Curry is by far the most popular, here.]

[ooc: * Going along w that gif, initially connecting can make the nerves feel like they're on fire, basically. Also, BOTH OF THESE ARE LUCID for Kazuki.]

That sounds delicious. [She'd be glad for that.]

You're really good at this kind of thing Kazuki-kun. [Oh- maybe she does recognize him then!]

I'm glad you think so. I do try my best.

[Not that he isn't aware of others. He's practically a celebrity here.]

How long have you been working here for? [Conversationally]

A few years now. [Something he originally began doing as a way of rehabilitation after being in a coma for a year.] It's pretty fun.

Is it? [That's good though. That he can enjoy his job. It's not to see someone so enthusiastic about their work.] I guess with something like this, you get to meet all kinds of new people, huh.

[Truthfully, only within the past short while have there been actual new people. In the past it was just Tatsumiya Island's residents. Now, a good deal of the Human Army have taken up living here on the new island.]

Yeah, I do. I just like the general feeling of being here. It's really friendly and warm.

[Well. . .] Something like it, I guess. I just like being able to make others happy, and give them somewhere peaceful.

[He pauses. Although he's been keeping quiet about this for the most part, as no one really needs to know, Yuuki has become a friend in this place (well, not just this dream world). Someone he's begun to trust. Even though the statement to follow isn't completely direct.]

. . .Since, to be honest, that kind of thing isn't always commonplace.

Peace, you mean?

[She frowns, her attention focusing on him. She certainly knows it isn't really easy to achieve. And even when things are at the calmest, it rarely stays that way. All people can continue to do is keep fighting so that it remain that way for as long as possible.

[There's a small nod to that.]

A war has been going on for the last number of years, though I never knew of it until I was fourteen. Much of the world has been completely destroyed, including Japan.

[He never went into any detail when they initially spoke of the country.]

Things have been relatively quiet over the past few years, but there's always that chance of something triggering it again. We all take every moment as something precious.

What is it that happened?

[Just a little wry.]

Would you believe me if I said a highly intelligent life-form from a very distant dimension happened upon the planet?

[It wouldn't be unusual at all if he does believe him. Just look at all that happens in this place.]

I don't blame you.

[He (very) faintly smiles. There's little to no mirth within it.]

We've been fighting with everything we can. None of the many, many lives lost can be in vain. All of humanity who are still around, every moment we all have together. . . we'll never let anything get in the way of us seeking out hope and a more peaceful world. No matter how difficult and desperate things often get.

[It's hopeful... yet sad. Her brows crease and her frown deepens.] I don't get why they would have attacked to begin with. Resources...?

[It's exactly that. They've all learned that with hope and despair come together.]

Everything probably would have been different if it were for something easy like resources. The Festum don't have a sense of what humanity is. They have absolutely no concept of emotion, or life as a whole. Such a thing as "conversation" doesn't exist with them. Much one what they're learned has been through us. Hatred, especially. If it really were for resources then they wouldn't have destroyed so much. What they aim for is to assimilate us humans, often done via invading the person's mind.

[He frowns some as well.] They act as one hive mind, but there are also variations between. Only recently has there been coexistence between us and them, but not entirely. Things are far more than the black and white they used to be.

How scary... [It's only honest. They sound like truly terrifying invaders. Especially if they can get into their minds. She doesn't even have to understand all of this assimilating.] Honestly, I can scarcely even imagine it all.

It's terrifying. [There's no pausing to those words.] They're breathtaking in appearance. In part that's what gets us pilots to lower our guard and become incredibly more vulnerable.

All of it, though. . . it is how it is. This is our life. We'd be long gone if we succumb to our fears.

It is. Sometimes it's the only option. Things may get difficult, but at the least we all have each others backs. There only are so many who can be on the front lines, but as a whole everyone has their own part.

[For as serious as the topic is, her word choice is a bit amusing.]

We use something called a Fafner. It's [a beat] well, I guess you'd call it a giant robot. Along with ground work, they can fly as well as operate under water. [She might recall their talk about how he's flown before, because this is the reason why.] The enemy is often even larger than them, but we've done well.
