Day 374 | Action | Open
Backside of the TV

[You're in a maze. It might be a sauna, hot and muggy and thick with steam. Or maybe it's a strip club, dark with violet curtains covering the walls and secret corners with music pounding through the air and whispers you can't quite make out as you wander the corridors. Maybe you're in what looks like a video game with blocky, artificial looking dungeon walls and floors. Or perhaps it's a secret base like you'd see in an action movie, the kind with sliding blast doors and scaffolding to climb around on. Maybe your maze is beautiful, like a fairy tale, or the way a child would imagine heaven, full of clouds and flowers and somehow heartbreakingly sad.

You can wander around whichever maze you find yourself in. Maybe you'll stay there, maybe they all begin to blur together and you find yourself drifting from one to another as you explore the hallways. They all have one thing in common though; they're full of Shadows, dark monsters that you can sneak past or fight. Probably fight, since Kanji is with you every step of the way, folding chair sling easily over his shoulder and looking for some action. He's wearing a pair of glasses, and you may notice you have a pair on, too. Pick whatever style you'd like, but if you take them off your surroundings will be lost in a fog that makes your head hurt. Try not to get lost in it.]

The TV world is hard to explain, especially when there's still so much they don't know about it. Ask him again when he wakes up and he'll do his best to explain the connection between the Midnight Channel and the way bodies turn up on foggy days. Right now it's better not to get distracted though.

"Yeah, there's one of there. See it?" He gestures to where a soul dancer is roundingtbe corner at the far end of the hall. Another one follows a minute later "They're usually in groups of two or three like that. Come on, let's get the drop on 'em. You got any weapons? Guns work, that's what Naoto uses."

Well, at least he's getting to experience it, which in Jack's book goes much further to at least give him the feel of something than a lot of dry explanations.

He looks ahead where Kanji's pointing and raises his eyebrows. They don't look very dangerous, but he assumes Kanji knows what he's talking about, so he inclines his head and draws his gun with a grin. He hasn't got around to requesting more ammo yet after using it all up the other day on raptors and wasps, but somehow he knows it's fully loaded again without having to check the chamber.

"I have a gun," he says airily, and looks at Kanji, ready to take his cue from him.

"Okay let's get the drop on it and hit it first!" And just like that he goes charging over, swinging his folding chair down to smash against the first Shadow.

"Yo, Rise! Can you get me some info on this thing?" He seems to be yelling into thin air and the Shadow uses the distraction to take a jab at him with its sword. He grunts, blocking most of it with his chair.

"Geeze, Kanji! You should be more careful!" A girl's voice echoes unexpectedly through their surroundings, sounding cute and perky and a little like she's coming in over a radio. A radio in their heads that is. "Okay, looks like it's weak against ice attacks."

"Aw, dammit. Okay, we're just gonna have to hit 'em real hard. Thanks Rise!" Like all that was totally normal.

He's not totally convinced these soul dancer things are dangerous enough to attack when they don't seem to be doing anything to attack them, but frankly the decision to shoot or not is taken out of his hands when Kanji charges in with his chair and there's too much Kanji in the way to risk shooting anyway.

He swears and runs forward and round to the side, trying to get an angle on the second Shadow while Kanji battles the first - then stops in his tracks when the girl's voice sounds in his head. Earpieces he's used to, but this definitely isn't an earpiece, and as far as he can tell it's nothing to do with the glasses they're both wearing either. It throws him for a moment, but by the time Kanji's announcing they're just going to have to hit them real hard, he's back on track, round to the side with a clear shot at the second Shadow.

"Or just shoot them," he agrees, with a shrug, and shoots the thing.

"Wow, great shot!" Rise's voice again as the Shadow Jack was aiming at disintegrates into a harmless everyday shadow. Kanji meanwhile pummels his one last time with the chair and it vanishes as well.

"Sorry, I shoulda warned you about her. Her Persona does support skills so she can wait outside and help us out and talk to us and everything." He picks his chair up again and slings it easily over his shoulder. "It's better to get a first hit in on 'em like that, before they really have time to fight back."

He jumps again at the voice in his head, and then chuckles. Of course it was a great shot. Shooting bad guys is what he does!

He watches the Shadows disintegrate with interest, and then surreptiously checks Kanji over to make sure he's not hurt.

"So she's telepathic?" he asks, because he's always curious, and it's been a long while since he's had any contact with that.

And then, also because he's always curious, he waves a hand at the empty space where the couple were dancing. "So what do they do if you don't get the drop on them first? Just go round randomly attacking anyone who crosses their path?"

"Tela-huh?" He never does well with big words and that gets a blank look from him.

"Basically. It's better to hit 'em first 'cause then you can get the jump on 'em. We're okay but if somebody who can't fight gets thrown in the Shadows go crazy and attack them when the fog comes." The round another corner and he spots three new Shadows at the end of it. "I remember these ones. They're weak against electricity so I'll take 'em out. Persona's might make more sense once you've seen 'em in action."

And just like that he charges off towards them, reaching down inside his heart for that bright blue spark, the thing that makes him him, all the good and bad stuff that he's accepted about himself. There's a flash of pale blue light and then his Persona shimmers into action above him, huge and threatening looking.

"Break 'em, Take-Mikazuchi!" Lightning flashes out from it in huge bolts, erasing the Shadows before they have time to blink and leaving the air charged with static electricity. Kanji pumps his fist excitedly and Take-Mikazuchi fades away, job done.

"Right." He lets the telepathy thing go, and focusses on the new threat, settling his stance and aiming his gun at them just in case, even whilst watching Kanji with intense curiosity, because he has absolutely no clue what he's doing when he reaches... inside himself?

And then suddenly there's a massive creature above him and he spins instinctively - again, just in case. It's immediately clear that it comes from Kanji, though, and he watches with rapidly growing glee as it takes out the new Shadows in an instant.

He lowers his gun and grins at Kanji. "That's pretty awesome. I had no idea it would be so big!"

"Yeah, mine's pretty big," He rubs a hand through his bleached hair self-consciously. "Not everybody's is like that. Naoto's is real small, but still has really strong attacks."

As if triggered by the mention of her the maze shifts as they round the next corner and they find themselves in the secret base, with its metal walls and bunker bunker doors. He looks around but doesn't look too surprised or like this is a new place to him. "This one's hers."

"Everyone's different, eh?" he grins, and then blinks a bit as suddenly they're in a different place, all metal girders and gratings and--

"Huh," he says, looking about him with a wry smile. "Reminds me of the Hub."

"Where's that?" He asked curiously, keeping an eye out but not looking too nervous to talk. He never thought this one was all that scary, especially once they figured out what was going on. Some of these mazes are creepy but Naoto's doesn't freak him out.

"My team's secret underground base. I guess there is a certain kind of decor that works for those!"

He keeps his eyes open as they walk, but so far there doesn't seem to be anything threatening here and he feels as at home here as he did in the strip club.

"Naoto's the girl you're into, right? Do you think we switched to her because you were thinking about her?"

He goes predictably bright red and makes an inarticulate noise at hearing it put that way, then clears his throat and tries again. "Uh, yeah, that's her. She wanted people to treat her like an adult. She's a detective but a lot of cops treat her like a little kid. It's why she's all serious all the time, and why she started dressing like a guy. So this was kinda like that, you know? Wanting to be some kinda action hero or whatever."

Jack watches him in amusement, though it fades somewhat as Kanji talks. "Something I hate about your period - the way women feel they have to emulate men just to get people to respect them." He shakes his head, saddened. "I didn't realise that's why started to dress like that. I assumed it was a statement of self-assurance and individuality rather than the opposite."

Those are some big and complicated words to use about a subject Kanji is not that much of an expert on but he thinks he gets what Jack's saying. "Maybe it's kinda everything. She still wears boy uniforms for school and stuff even though everyone knows now. I figure as long as she's okay with it it's good with me."

There's some steam billowing out from behind a metal door and when he opens it the scenery changes again in that way that makes sense in dreams. Now they're in a muggy sauna, hot and full of impenetrable steam. He rubs his head awkwardly. "Ugh. This ones mine."

Yeah, he's still got to learn about using small words when talking to Kanji. It sounds like Kanji's got what he's saying, though, and he grins slightly, shrugging a shoulder in acknowledgement. "Okay, so perhaps that's started but she's made it her own now. Good for her!"

He peers round through the thick steam at the new place they've entered, and then looks round at Kanji, eyebrows going up. "Your place is a sauna?"

"You don't gotta say it like that," Mumbled, while he turns bright red. Man, he hates this place. He can accept it and his Shadow and what it's all about and be okay with it being a part of him and everything but that doesn't mean he really enjoys coming here or anything. Mostly it's just embarrassing.

"Like what?" he asks, honestly surprised by Kanji's reaction, even if it is rather cute. "Less to be embarrassed about than a strip club, I'd have thought! Just surprising, really. I'm curious as to the reasoning behind it, if there is any?"

"It's more embarrassin' when it's your own personal stuff." He tries to think about how to explain it. "Back home with my friends it ain't so bad, 'cause everyone's done it, you know? Everybody knows what that's like and it ain't nice but you get how it makes other people feel. It's harder though 'cause I know you ain't don't that."

As to why it's a sauna, that just gets A Look. "Seriously? You don't think this is a little gay?"

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

It's very true. He's completely without context here (he doesn't even really play video games so he doesn't even have that context) and that does mean he's coming at it from a very different direction than Kanji and his friends, since everything is new to him.

Well, except the fighting monsters part. Obviously that's extremely familiar.

He returns Kanji's look with an amused smile. "To think that, in the way you mean it, I'd have to think of 'gay' as some sort of derogatory term, which I don't. Anyway, lots of guys like saunas! Lots of hot girls - or guys, whichever's your preference! - in scanty clothing... what's not to enjoy?"

The mention of girls in a sauna gets a pained look. There was a predictable anime mixup with hot springs times that one time they all went to Yukiko's inn, and he's still not over that disaster.

"Well yeah most of the time they're fine. But that's what I mean about Shadows and this world and stuff. They turn it way up and out of control. Okay, so what you said, all that stuff you like about this place? That's exactly why my Shadow liked this place."

"Right..." He nods, more or less getting it. At least in as much as he knows Kanji is as insecure about his sexuality as most people from his era - he guesses he can understand why it might be embarrassing.

"So perhaps your Shadow was telling you to just relax and enjoy?" he suggests, seriously thinking about taking off his coat because it's hot in here!

He sighs, feeling like he's doing a bad job at explaining all this. "It ain't fun or simple like that. Your Shadow is a monster with your face on. They don't talk, they're outta control. Mine was screaming at everybody about wanting to be accepted, Naoto's tried to cut her open and change her, Rise's was like the idol everyone wants to see but way more. And if you don't wanna hear what they're talkin' about they really do change into a real monster, something that looks nothin' like you at all and they'll kill you. That's all the murders we've been finding; we don't know who's throwing people into the TV but they know the Shadows are gonna do the dirty work for 'em. They freak out and kill you for not acceptin' 'em. If my friends hadn't been able to fight mine it woulda done that to me. They're not trying to help you or tell you anything, they're just feeling that are out of control."

Jack's eyes widen as he listens to this. "That all sounds rather nightmarish." He's not new to the idea of the monster within - not at all - but this seems like a particularly gruesome manifestation of it.

"So, is your Shadow still connected to you even after it's manifested? What happens if you kill it?"

"I dunno if you can kill it. This place kinda messes with you. Like the fog makes you all weak and tired if you don't have glasses to see through it. I got lucky and my friends showed up and fought my Shadow with their Personas. After they kicked it's ass it just went back to looking like me and I taked to it and it turned into my Persona once I accepted it. I dunno if they die."

He looks thoughtful for a minute, thinking as hard as Kanji can. "Hang on though, 'cause Mitsuo didn't accept his. It just kinda vanished in the end. I dunno what happened to it."
