[backdated to Day 367] classy Victorians can afford being late to the party
a;

[Watch out! When they said, "let's launch our kids into the future", they probably didn't mean this: a Victorian boy sailing at inhuman speeds over everyone's heads.

The kid's desperately screaming "Sebastian!" even as he collides with… well, Sebastian. Who just so happened to arrive in the prison a moment prior. Saying that Ciel "collides" with him is selling Sebastian short: what happens is that Sebastian, in that one moment between arriving and having a flying kid crash into him, manages to turn around just in time to catch Ciel in his arms.

It’s… not Sebastian's best heroic catch. Managing to catch someone at a moment's notice is one thing – bracing for the unexpected impact at the same time is another entirely. With a grunt he takes a stumbling step backwards—

possibly right into you. You know, if you just happened to be innocently standing there and didn't have the reflexes to move out of the way of two people who were literally not there a moment earlier. Sorry?]

[[OOC: Let us know if you'd like Ciel, Sebastian or both for this option!]]

b;

[Five minutes later and Ciel's off, doing his part in finding more intel on this place. He's approaching people at random, turning wide lost eyes on others and wandering around like a lost child. Anyone in the vicinity will hear him poshly asking for help.]

I think I'm lost. [Looks down at his jumpsuit. How awful. Not to mention ill-fitting, the sleeves spilling over his fingers and his legs being dwarfed by bunches of cloth. Looks back up.] No. I'm definitely lost. Have you seen my caretaker? Tall, dark, ridiculously useless when faced with cats? We were separated and...I don't even know why I'm here.

[So innocent. Much helpless. The powers that be definitely screwed up with this one. Feel free to spill anything you know about this place to him, even gossip if need be.]

c;

[Five minutes later, Sebastian is on the other side of the dome, to do his part of the investigation. "Try to find a way to break us out." Not the easiest task when his demon powers are restrained, but of course he'll give it his all regardless.

At least his part doesn't require any helpless act - he's changed out of the jumpsuit, is strolling alongside the edge of the dome with seemingly perfect composure before calmly stopping, looking up at the wall... you'd think he isn't a new arrival at all, acting so cool about everything. That is, perhaps, before he turns his head towards any passerby and asks, pleasantly and with a smile:]

The dome truly has never shown signs of cracking, has it?

[Maybe he is a little worried, after all.]

[He doesn't answer the question immediately, turning one of the devices over in his hand over and over. He can't make heads or tails of it from just the design. Then he presses a button, and...]

Ah.

[The strange-looking screen comes to life, and there's the buzz of a voice coming from the device. Now Sebastian gets it, and he's quick to put it on correctly. One moment: he'll answer as soon as he can. No way is he letting Ciel put some strange thing on his head before checking that it's safe.]

How is that irrelevant? In case it's escaped your notice, we're in Reaper HQ! What if it becomes fairly relevant very soon! [Or does Sebastian think he can go about fighting with a few scythes sticking out of his chest?

Ciel would happily continue on his tirade if Sebastian isn't so intent on ignoring him.]
Sebastian, what are you doing? That's not a hat.

[Does Sebastian think he can go about fighting with a few scythes sticking out of his chest? Sebastian is the kind of person who thinks he can defeat a Reaper with a butter knife. Of course he thinks he could fight regardless of the number of scytches sticking out of him. You see:]

I will not leave you. [He won't die, in other words.] And, as per our contract, I will keep you safe no matter the circumstances and no matter what injury I might suffer. [......Sebastian. Sebastian, in Ciel's timeline you were unconscious. Twice over, even, brief as both instances were. Still. Unconscious.

In Sebastian's defense, he knows he has limits. But if Ciel is in danger Sebastian has to protect him regardless of where his limits lie, regardless of how injured he might be. There is no alternative to that - he'd simply have to find a way to do it.

And while he answers Ciel this time, Sebastian is still listening to whatever the voice in the device is saying (it can hardly be called multitasking when he's only focusing on two things at the same time), frowning lightly as he does.]

This is how it's meant to be worn, I think - rather like a tiara. [He holds out the second device for Ciel. It's just a voice - nothing more dangerous than that, it seems.] Please put it on.

[You'll want to listen to this message.]

[Ciel eyes the device in Sebastian's hand, taking it with some wariness and suspicion. A tiara, he says? Well, Ciel may or may not have some experience in wearing one of those. They may or may not go well with a certain Chinese qipao hanging in his closet.]

[Ciel's expression grows incredulous as he listens to the messages, fisting Sebastian's sleeve in his grip and ruthlessly pushing down the impending panic attack. Not now, he doesn't have time for it!

If these messages are to be believed...Where is his body? More importantly, what are they doing to his body?! Is it worse that his mind's not there to experience whatever torture they're visiting upon it? Would he want to live through that experience a second time? If this contraption is to believed, then Sebastian, this being standing before him, might not even be his butler. It would explain Sebastian's lapse in memory and his lack of a fatal wound. Maybe Ciel needs to pinch him, to make sure?]

How is something like this even possible?! Surely this thing is lying. You can't separate a person's consciousness from their body, that's impossible.

[Yes, please control those inconvenient emotional hangups. Sebastian has learned not to touch Ciel when he has these reactions - Sebastian can guess what's triggering about the message - but if Ciel initiates the contact, Sebastian will follow his lead.

He turns enough to face Ciel, and reaches to take hold of his free arm. Holding it up. Feel that? Steady. Here.]

A person's soul might be separated from their body. It would cost that person their life.

Such a person would not have a demon to call their own. [Sebastian would know. He wouldn't allow it. Never in the history of mankind has a more comforting statement been uttered.]

[Such words uttered, and such immediate comfort do they offer. Ciel partially relaxes at that, his breathing no longer a tightly controlled act as he nods at Sebastian. Yes. Yes, that is right. He has Sebastian Michaelis. Sebastian would never let him die before eating his soul.]

Yes. Yes, of course.

[Sebastian would never let him die before his time, why was he even worried. Eating his soul...hold the telegraph.]

We're currently manifesting as our souls, are we? [Is Sebastian going to eat him now, without the burden of the contract staying his hand? How does that even work? After all, he's been drawn out of his physical form, like an oyster cracked and gutted.

Less urgently but no less baffling: demons have souls? Is this the punchline of a joke?]

--No?

["How on Earth did you jump to that conclusion" Sebastian almost wants to say. A person's soul (demon's? do demons even have souls. canon please be clearer)] would not look a perfect replica of their physical body - where would you even get that idea?

...Ah. No, of course, Ciel wouldn't know what a soul looks like.]

[After that initial visible surprise, Sebastian's features smoothes out once more.]

I told you: were your soul separated from your body, you would be dead.

It cannot be true. [The odd devices are lying. Sebastian is, of course, never ever wrong. Not even when he is, like right now. They don't know that yet.]

Did the voice speak of "crimes"? [The voice in Sebastian's ear is probably still rattling off his (it's a... long list). He's only half-listening to it; it's a boring list.]

Are you sure? [They are dealing with Reapers here, or so Ciel thinks. Well, if Sebastian says so, then it's a done deal. Sebastian never lies (to Ciel that is). This...contraption or whatever is obviously trying to confuse and mislead them. Besides, that far under the sea? There's no way the construction crew would survive the building process. They'd be crushed or drowned.]

Yes. [Frowns, though his list had concluded while they were talking. There's only so many atrocities he can commit in a three year time span, even with an amoral creature by his side strategically egging him on. Putting aside the hows and whys of this thing even knowing what his crimes are, or how doggedly ambitious it is to try and list a couple centuries worth of crimes] I won't recognize it. Only Queen Victoria may hold any judgment over me.

I have seen people with their minds damaged or partially lost, but once it is truly gone, so is their soul. [And then they're very dead indeed. A creature like Sebastian should be able to tell with certainty, right? Yes, he's sure.]

Naturally, young master. I am commenting neither on their accuracy nor what right they delude themselves to have to make such judgements. [Calling the Reapers(?) deluded is no subjective comment, obviously. Sebastian's own list is very... Any demon's list of crimes would very much like this. He's not even sure if it's tailored to him or not.]

Does this entire message not seem designed to unnerve and confuse? [Including the "bodies and consciousnesses separated" part. If Ciel's crimes are accurate, it's not a long leap to assume they'd know it'd unsettle him to be told such lies.]
