Day 364 - Mail Call
[They had gotten a lot of newbies the day before, so Duo was using a cart to help with the baskets. They weren't easy to carry when you had more than four of them.

To get to the newbies, he had a list of names, so he was calling them up on their communicators to find out where they were so he could bring the baskets to them. The call likely consisted of an introduction of some sort (Hey, I'm Duo.) and an explaination (I have a basket for ya.) and a request for the current location of the recipient (Where can I meet ya to drop this off?).]

Today's Deliveries

  • Welcome baskets for Day 363 New Arrivals

{OOC: This is perfectly welcome to be handwaved for anyone who doesn't want to thread out a welcome basket delivery. Threads can either start with the communicator call, or with Duo meeting up with the character in person to give them the basket. Feel free to reply to the basket thread or start a new top level here in the post. I'm flexible! This is also Duo's open action post for today for anyone else who might want to have a run-in with him.}

You guys do this every time there's new people, Duo? That's an amazing work.

If I can ask something, what are these for? [She raises a packet of batteries.]

[He smiled a bit.] It's nothing, really. It passes some of the downtime around here.

[He nodded at the packet.] You put those in the flashlight so you can see if the lights go out. It gets real dark down here.

[He reached forward, towards the handle of the flashlight that was sticking up out of the basket.]

Want me to show you?

Oh, if it's not too much trouble!

Sure, no problem.

[He the light out and showed her the back end.]

See that? You press on that tab there, and it pops open. [He did just that.] Like that. And then, there's little markings in here... [He pointed them out, down the inside of the cylinder.] Those show you the position of the batteries.

[He took the package of batteries and pulled it open.]

See how they have that little bump on one end? The pictures inside the flashlight have it, too, so you just match 'em up.

[He showed her how they matched and then slid two of the batteries inside.]

Then, push the cap closed... [He clipped it back into place.] And done! Now, you have a working flashlight for when it gets too dark.

[He showed her the power button and clicked it on and then off so she could see it work.]

All set. [He held it out for her to take.]

[She gasps and grabs it. She tries pressing it on and off until she's satisfied.] Amazing! So, uh, these battery sticks are where the light is stored?

Uh... sort of. The light isn't really stored, but the power to make the light is. That's what the batteries are for. You put them in, and they give the flashlight the power needed to make the light.

[That sounded good, right? Sure, there was a ton of technical stuff involved, but he was getting the impression she wasn't used to technology. He'd seen that in Marina before, so it was best to keep it simple for now and explain more later if she wanted the heavier details.]

Sticks of power... That's amazing. Do they waste away like charcoal and wood?

[Well, she's understanding it but she keeps comparing it to other simpler sources of energy.]

Yeah, in a way. They'll lose the ability to give power, but they don't disappear. You're just left with a stick that no longer works.

[He nodded. At least they were able to communicate and she could pick it up in a way that was familiar to her. It was easier when you could compare things to something the other person already knew about.]

Ooooooh. One last question, then. What do we do with the batteries when they don't have power left? With spare wood you can do other stuff, but these are new things.

Depends on the batteries. Those ones I just put in there just get tossed out, but the store here has ones that are called "rechargeable". They come with a special box that you can use to restore their power.

[He wasn't sure how to describe "plugging it into the wall" to her and sort of blanked for a moment.]

[She stares at the battery pack with awe.] So these guys do die but there are some that don't. Wow. This place has impressing stuff.

[He nodded.]

Pretty much. If you need any other help with anything you're not sure about, I'd be glad to help you. Just give me a call on the communicator.

[He tapped his headset.]
