Day 364 - Mail Call
[They had gotten a lot of newbies the day before, so Duo was using a cart to help with the baskets. They weren't easy to carry when you had more than four of them.

To get to the newbies, he had a list of names, so he was calling them up on their communicators to find out where they were so he could bring the baskets to them. The call likely consisted of an introduction of some sort (Hey, I'm Duo.) and an explaination (I have a basket for ya.) and a request for the current location of the recipient (Where can I meet ya to drop this off?).]

Today's Deliveries

  • Welcome baskets for Day 363 New Arrivals

{OOC: This is perfectly welcome to be handwaved for anyone who doesn't want to thread out a welcome basket delivery. Threads can either start with the communicator call, or with Duo meeting up with the character in person to give them the basket. Feel free to reply to the basket thread or start a new top level here in the post. I'm flexible! This is also Duo's open action post for today for anyone else who might want to have a run-in with him.}

Hello, hello! This is Zeno - so tell Zeno what's happening!

[What is this? An answering machine?]

Hey, Zeno. This is Duo, resident delivery guy and mailman. I've got a basket for ya. You mind meeting up so I can hand it over?

Hm, a basket? Zeno can get a basket for himself so why is Mister trying to deliver one?

Oh... well... this one's got stuff in it for ya. Like, uh... candy, cookies, a flashlight, an umbrella... some information about the prison...

Stuff.

[ . . . Someone suspicious wishing to drop off something suspicious to them?]

I can meet you. If you have such for the Princess, Miss Kaya, or Zeno I can retrieve theirs as well. Otherwise you will get four of us at once.

[WATCHING YOU BUDDY. Don't think about doing anything questionable at all to the princess.]

Oh... well, Zeno's already asked for his.

'Sides... unless I've got permission, I gotta give 'em to the addressee.

Wait... who's the princess?

I-It matters not! [The princess can have his basket if she needs one.]

. . . All of us are staying together, so there is no reason that you should not be fine passing the baskets to either Zeno or myself.

[Duo raised an eyebrow, even if it couldn't be seen.]

Uh-huh. And how do I know you're not going to slip something in there yourself and hand it off to the princess without me knowing?

The princess is my master! And I cannot allow some stranger to pass off a possibly suspicious item to her! Can you prove that you do not work for these Kiosk?

[Wardens. Whatever they are called.]

Well, I'm a fellow inmate, the baskets are from the inmate-run Welcoming Committee, so yeah. Nothing from the Wardens.

[Duo might have just given off an exasperated sigh.]

Um, hello? Is this the mailman? I wanted to say thank you so much because this is... oh gods, this is so amazing. Are you sure we can keep all of these treasures?

[For her, a poor girl, such basic items look like treasures.]

Oh yeah. Sure. [He smiled.] No problem.

[He chuckled a little, having a feeling he understood her reaction better than she knew.]

Yup, they're all yours. You can keep 'em, give 'em to friends. Whatever you want. Euphie and her Welcoming Committee help put those together for new arrivals.

Oh, it was miss Euphie? [She's actually talked to the other girl before.] Can you say thanks to her and her friends, too? Wow, people here are so generous. I don't even understand what some of this stuff is, but it's fun to figure it out!

If you've got any questions about it, just ask. I don't mind helping out.

Are you the princess I was told about? Or Miss Kaya?

You guys do this every time there's new people, Duo? That's an amazing work.

If I can ask something, what are these for? [She raises a packet of batteries.]

[He smiled a bit.] It's nothing, really. It passes some of the downtime around here.

[He nodded at the packet.] You put those in the flashlight so you can see if the lights go out. It gets real dark down here.

[He reached forward, towards the handle of the flashlight that was sticking up out of the basket.]

Want me to show you?

Sure, no problem.

[He the light out and showed her the back end.]

See that? You press on that tab there, and it pops open. [He did just that.] Like that. And then, there's little markings in here... [He pointed them out, down the inside of the cylinder.] Those show you the position of the batteries.

[He took the package of batteries and pulled it open.]

See how they have that little bump on one end? The pictures inside the flashlight have it, too, so you just match 'em up.

[He showed her how they matched and then slid two of the batteries inside.]

Then, push the cap closed... [He clipped it back into place.] And done! Now, you have a working flashlight for when it gets too dark.

[He showed her the power button and clicked it on and then off so she could see it work.]

All set. [He held it out for her to take.]

[She gasps and grabs it. She tries pressing it on and off until she's satisfied.] Amazing! So, uh, these battery sticks are where the light is stored?

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]devine_braid
2016-06-18 06:23 am UTC (link)
Uh... sort of. The light isn't really stored, but the power to make the light is. That's what the batteries are for. You put them in, and they give the flashlight the power needed to make the light.

[That sounded good, right? Sure, there was a ton of technical stuff involved, but he was getting the impression she wasn't used to technology. He'd seen that in Marina before, so it was best to keep it simple for now and explain more later if she wanted the heavier details.]

Sticks of power... That's amazing. Do they waste away like charcoal and wood?

[Well, she's understanding it but she keeps comparing it to other simpler sources of energy.]

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]devine_braid
2016-07-03 03:58 pm UTC (link)
Yeah, in a way. They'll lose the ability to give power, but they don't disappear. You're just left with a stick that no longer works.

[He nodded. At least they were able to communicate and she could pick it up in a way that was familiar to her. It was easier when you could compare things to something the other person already knew about.]

[info]fadingsunshine
2016-07-06 06:59 pm UTC (link)
Ooooooh. One last question, then. What do we do with the batteries when they don't have power left? With spare wood you can do other stuff, but these are new things.

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]devine_braid
2016-07-14 12:19 am UTC (link)
Depends on the batteries. Those ones I just put in there just get tossed out, but the store here has ones that are called "rechargeable". They come with a special box that you can use to restore their power.

[He wasn't sure how to describe "plugging it into the wall" to her and sort of blanked for a moment.]

Pretty much. If you need any other help with anything you're not sure about, I'd be glad to help you. Just give me a call on the communicator.

[Having been on the run makes him kind of cautious, even if they were all in the same situation here. Victor was a bit early, and so the stretch of time felt longer than it was.

Still, it was in acceptable boundaries.]
