Day 363 - Open
[VIDEO]

[The image is shaky at first, but then a black-haired girl appears with her head turned around. She seems to be following someone else's instructions and talking to someone off-camera.

--Like this? So I just start talking and people will see Kaya? Mmm, okay!

[She faces forward now, her cheeks a bit pink and her big eyes filled with insecurity.]

Hi there? My name is Kaya, and I just got here, and I don't really understand this place or what we're supposed to do here and... [Deep breath.] Sorry, sorry, I got carried away and talked too fast.

I got confused and thought I had died, and this was the afterlife. But Zeno here told me it's not? Is that right? Are we all really alive?

Um, also... I was really sick, back at home. I should be dying from my disease, but now I'm feeling fine. That's why I thought I was... So, uh, what I wanted to ask is, where can I find a doctor? I want to know if I'm truly cured, because I don't want anyone to catch it from me. I need to be sure. But don't worry, I'll go far away from you guys if I...

I'm doing it again, sorry. I just want to know.

[Yup, she's more worried about getting people sick than being suddenly locked up in a strange place.]

[ACTION]

[This cute girl walks around the trees in Sector 3's residential area. She sits on a bench and stares at the ocean sky above it all. The lack of stars in the sky is strange, but she finds the water fascinating and soothing. She doesn't wander around, as the place is much wider than everything she's seen in her short life. Any house around her is several times large than her old house. Are those castles? To her, they are. Everything in that land is vast, just like the sea. Just like the street goes on and on.

Her eyes are a bit red and her sweet smile is sad, but she'll be fine.]

[Oh! She shakes her hands from side to side.] Um, you don't have to take so much trouble for Kaya, mister! It's okay, really!

You mean like... a nurse? [It's the first time someone has told her she could learn to do something useful, ever since she got sick at least. Sure, her cooking and sewing improved since a guy moved in, but that's another level.]

[He lets out a small chuckle.] Don't worry, I don't really mind. Plus, it gives me a chance to learn more about this place.

Yes, something along those lines. Do you think you would be interested in doing something like that?

[That still doesn't give her comfort.] Are you also new here?

I... [The idea of working and helping people somehow seems magical and until then impossible. Is she really up to that? Shouldn't that guy choose someone who's actually smart and knows more things? She kind of wants to, and the more she thinks about it the more appealing it is, but she's not sure she should say yes.] First I need to know if I'm healthy, sir. [Because an ill person should never work around others.]

You caught me there. Yes, that's right, I just arrived here as well.

[He used to teach people and he's got at least some confidence there, though the girl raises a good point and his expression turns more serious.] That is true, though considering how advanced everything here seems there might be even a cure for you in case you are noz.

Oh. So you're not one of the in-mate doctors from that clinic, then.

You really think they could have a cure? [Her disease was incurable back in her world, back in her time. So yes, it's surprising to her.] There must be amazing medicinal herbs here if they can do that!

Yes, that's right. Granted, my main field of study is something different, if they have full-fledged professionals there, it might be good to go there, regardless if I take a look at you or not. Second opinions are never a bad choice.

I do think it is possible. In the place I'm from we were researching a lot and found a lot of cures for illnesses that were thought of as incurable. This place seems far more advanced than the one I'm from, so I wouldn't be surprised if they do.

[...She's not sure she understood every word he said, but she got the idea. Kaya realized that her question might have been taken badly because of the phrasing, but thankfully the guy didn't take it that way either.]

So you think what you have learned is probably different to the stuff the other doctors know about? Maybe you could get a job with them! Someone who knows a new thing they lack can be helpful, right? It can't hurt to ask.

Y-yeah... Kouka could never have a city under the sea, unless it's made by gods or something. This is pretty advanced. No wonder I thought it was Heaven.

Not necessarily different, the two fields tend to overlap a lot, but I think someone who mainly focuses on medicine might be more proficient. But thank you, I will consider that option.

If this was Heaven... [He glances to the side for a moment, then shakes his head.] Kouka is the place you are from, right? How is it like?

Ah. Just like a kimono shop would prefer to hire a seamstress instead of just someone who sews a little but prefers embroidery or knitting. Yeah, I get that.

[She understands the pause. He's probably thinking that if this were Heaven, he would've met one of his dead. She also expected to see her family here, not her very alive husband.] Ah, yeah! Well, it's... I only know two villages and the woods around my hut, so I don't know how the rest is like. Like any other kingdom, maybe?

[He chuckles again. That's not a comparison he had ever heard of before, but it was strangely fitting.] Yes, it's something like that.

[It's a little different from what she is thinking, though Victor doesn't go any deeper into that subject.] Ah, that makes sense that you don't know that much, if you've been that sick. Was there nobody tending to you?

Maybe you'd prefer to work on your thing you like better. Having all those talents seems so cool, though!

Healthy people usually don't know that much, either. You'd need to study or travel, and no one can afford that. Um, I had my mom and my little brother, but they got sick and left before I did so I tended to them. I was alone for a while. Then I met my husband and he did his best.

Haha, it's more like my field of study tends to be rather expansive. It overlaps with a lot of other things so I ended up studying them as well.

[It sounded like she came from one of the poorer areas. It made it obvious to him again how lucky he had been to be able to study and work for the Royal Society - as long as it had lasted, at least.] Sounds like you had at least some luck, to meet and marry someone under those difficult circumstances.

You're really, really smart then! It's usually hard to even study one thing, or so I've heard!

Yup, I've been lucky! Zeno's really sweet and kind to me. Other people would've left but he decided to stay.

Now you're embarrassing me, I'm not that smart. [He really does seem a little flustered, though it's not a praise he receives all that rarely.]

That sounds indeed as if you are lucky. He must really love you a lot.

Well, you're probably smarter than anyone I know back home.

[She blushes.] I think he does. I'm not sure why, but he probably loves me at least a little. [She's not really that amazing to receive love, she thinks, but she's thankful he returned her feelings.

Under her embarrassed smile, there are some doubts. He seemed so troubled when they met. Maybe she was mistaken? Maybe he was relieved she was going to die at last and then she didn't? She puts that negative thought aside and decides to believe, at least for now, that he really loves her.]

Don't say that. Plus, there are really all types of intelligence - some I could never hope to match.

I think he does, especially if he stayed you despite your sickness. It shows you must be really important to him. [Not everyone would do that - especially under such circumstances and if they weren't a family member to begin with. Of course there could be always a hidden agenda, but it didn't sem like she was the rich type.]

[From the look in her eyes, you can see you lost her a bit. Types of intelligence?] Like... clever and smart and wise?

Well, either way he feels, he's really special to me and I hope he gets to be happy. He deserves happiness.

I guess that's one way of putting it. I'm more the studious type, but I wouldn't be able to do things like a detective, or a thief for the matter with creating multiple identities or on spot lies. [Though it would be a lie to say he can't survive on the street after having been on the run for so long already.]

I get the feeling this goes for both of you. He might be already happier than you realize when he's with you.

I guess it's a case of having the possibilities taken away from you. I'm sure if you are given more possibilities, you would be able to.

You're really kind to say so.

Ah, no, I never had those possibilities to begin with! Peasants can't really do a lot of jobs that need tons of thinking.

It's just the normal thing? Even if I didn't love him, he's so nice that he deserves it.

Um, that sounds as if the outlook in your country is still really old-fashioned. From where I'm from we can see that those people also have potential when possibilities are given to him.

Not everyone is like that, trust me.

I don't think that's the problem. There's no money to go somewhere else to take apprenticeship or learn those things. Food and medicine are hard enough to get.

That's... [That's really sad. She knows deep down, but she's been isolated for a while now and wants to believe the best from people.]
