Day 360 | Open Audio | Open Action
Audio

[Oh look. He's STILL drunk. Mal had seen his disc. He got to witness himself die at the hands of Niska. He hoped his crew was OK.]

Anybody else slotted to die horrible deaths in their future?

[Healthy Mal. Real healthy.]

---

Action

[Wander here and stumble there. Mal had thought to go to the stables, but apparently smelling the way he did bothered the horses. He finally ends up on the beach, staring at nothing as he continues to drown himself in whiskey. Fight for those who love him? What does it matter? He's just going to get captured by Niska and tortured to death. The wardens didn't see fit to show him the fact he would actually survive that...

Of course, there's always the chance he can change that future. But it's hard to see at the moment. He'd rather wallow in self pity.]

"Yeah." He sighs again. So many people here who know if they go back home, they'll die far, far too soon.

"On the plus side, at least here you know you're safe. The guy who kills you can't get to you here!"

"Not unless he shows up. He's a far bigger criminal than I am."

Yes. Mal is being extremely pessimistic.

He inclines his head. "Fair point." He gives a slightly over the top shudder. "Hope none of my nemeses ever turn up here. I could really do without the Master or anyone like that being locked up here with the rest of us!"

"The Master? Sounds like someone has too high an opinion of themselves." He snorts.

"You could say that. Although to be fair, he does have a way of sort of hypnotising people so they'll follow him, so he has kind of earned the title.

"He's another of those torturing types. The kind who does it for fun, far more than for any other reason. Really hope he doesn't show up here!"

Mal sets his jaw when Jack mentions torture and takes another swig of the whiskey.

"Then we definitely don't need him showin' up here."

"No, we don't." Talking about the Master makes him really want a drink, so once Mal's finished with his swig he swipes the bottle again and takes a swig of his own.

"On the plus side, at the moment it seems like we've finally got rid of all the troublesome characters here.

"Though of course, now I've said that, we'll probably get some new ones turning up..."

"Have we now? So what.. are you all a bunch of heroes?" Note he doesn't include himself in that assessment.

He watches the alcohol leave his hand again and frowns.

"Not sure I'd go as far as that, but a certainly a high proportion of us seem to fall into the 'save the world' type category," he replies, studying Mal surreptiously. He doesn't know the man well enough to know if he fits into the 'hero' category, but he's fairly certain he's a good man.

He hands the bottle back with a gentle smile. "At the very least, most of the people we have left seem to be the types to help people rather than want to kill or torture them."

Mal's more of the get ahead in life category. But when it comes down to it, he'll more than likely save people. Look at Simon and River. But he has no problem killing those that deserve it. And his definition of deservin' tends to be more liberal than most.

"Suppose that's somethin'. Wouldn't mind a bit more seediness though. Feel a little closer to home than dealing with the big damn hero type."

Yeah, exactly. You don't have to set out to be a hero to be one of the people who protects those who need protecting.

He chuckles at Mal's comment. "All a bit too clean and above-board for you here, is it?"

"Back home I'm a smuggler. Spend all my time out on the rim an' keeping one step ahead of law enforcement. An' she's an old ship." Be happy Jack. He doesn't admit smuggling to just anyone.

It's probably easier because Jack's not the sort of person to judge someone on something like that - or anything, really (except possibly closedmindedness).

"A smuggler with a conscience, though," he grins, referring back to the not being able to live with taking medication from those who needed it. He quirks an eyebrow. "Perhaps even the hint of a latter-day Robin Hood?"

"A smuggler who gets that the even those who supported Unification can still get fucked by it."

Too drunk to get the reference though he does know it usually...

"Isn't that just the way of the world," Jack agrees with sigh. "Magnanimous of you to try and help even those who fought against you."

The complexities of which are something he definitely appreciates.

"Well, not everyone knows jus' how evil the government is."

Which, in all honestly, Mal didn't fully understand until the Tams entered his life.

"It really is evil? As opposed to just overbearing and corrupt?"

He doesn't know much about Mal's world, but he's had experience of at least one truly evil dicator/overlord and he wouldn't wish that on anyone.

He huffs. "Picked up some passengers. Brother and sister. Well... we picked up the brother and his cargo. Which was his sister. Who he helped escape from some government facility where they were doing things to her. She's..."

Words don't exactly describe River. Mal's fond of her in a way. Heck, he saved her and Simon when they were about to be burned at the stake. But she sure does cause trouble.

Jack's eyebrows go up at the description of the sister being 'cargo', but his expression turns to compassion as Mal goes on, and when Mal stops, lost for words, he prompts, "Badly affected by it? How bad is it?"

"She ain't all there. Sometimes she's okay. Sometimes she's just mumbling about string or how fast humans can be drained of blood. Other times she's having tantrums. And she's quick."

And he doesn't know that she's also essentially an assassin.

"Sounds like fun," he says grimly, and doesn't say, Sounds like Torchwood around the turn of the twentieth century because that wouldn't really be very helpful.

"So you've taken them both in, then? Keeping them hidden from the Alliance?"

"Her brother's a doctor. We don't have a medic on board, so he earns his keep."

Mal still isn't sure about them. Most days they ain't much of a problem, but when they are troublesome, they're troublesome. And their dynamic with Jayne is... sensitive at best.

He nods, reading the between the lines and behind Mal's gruff exterior, and says mildly, "Even better if they're useful to you, too!"
