[Day 332][Video|Action|Open]
[Seyn is staring down the video screen, not that unfamiliar with the technology, even if this form of it is different from what she’s used to. There’s an awkward, tense smile on her face, as if she’s trying to think of the most polite way to say what’s on her mind. Bright orange really clashes with her hair and eyes in a way that she immediately thinks would make her a rather gaudy Knight, but that's not important, is it? Not when she's just been sent to a virtual prison.]

All right now. I can believe that I’m in prison, considering what I’ve been up to the last few months. But some of these crimes are really just too much. How can they blame you for crimes that weren’t crimes when you were doing 'em? [Or at least not viewed as crimes towards the people she was fighting when it happened. She doesn't sound as angry as she really is, managing to keep most of her tone this side of frustration, the smile more obviously sarcastic by the end than genuine.]

I guess I should be thankful I wasn't sent straight to solitary, but it's hard to feel grateful right this nano.

[Action]
[There's only so much that being on video can tell her, so Seyn starts wandering, using the map to familiarize herself with the locations, especially where the food stores are and the lodgings. She feels like she sticks out like an accident cone in these clothes. It makes her feel too visible, and she's used to wearing white.

So the first place she heads towards is Bull's Eye. She can't get that ankle monitor off, but she's not staying in this jumpsuit. She'll be digging through the clothes and when she finds something she likes well enough--black jogging pants and a dark red shirt--she'll be stripping down to her underwear right there and putting it on. Speed is more important to her than privacy--not that she's really used to privacy in the first place--so sorry to anyone who happens to walk by the women's athletic section right then. She's a bit too tall for the racks themselves to cover her up. After the change, she'll be wandering from sector to sector, trying to memorize everything that she can. Knowing the playing field is always rule number one.]

[Well. If she's really not bothered, he won't be bothered, either.]

Why? In many places, it is customary to undress privately. [And now that he's looking at her, he notices those ears.] But maybe your home is different. May I ask where you come from?

New York City. And believe me, there were too many of us around to worry about having some special room for changing clothes.

[She tosses the pants back on the rack, still searching.] And we're in a prison aren't we? It's not like there's much privacy in a place like this either.

I had no idea that New York City was so liberal or so crowded. [Seems plausible and in keeping with what little he has heard, however. Maybe they are from similar worlds.]

The dome is relatively small, I agree, but there is privacy, if you want it. It's an exceedingly civil prison.

Isn't "civil prison" a bit of a contradiction? [She finally finds a pair of pants she thinks will be long enough and goes to put them on, tosses her head a bit to the side to knock her long braid away from her face while she does it.]

And there are cameras everywhere. How is that private?

You would think so, and yet... [A broad, sweeping gesture that's probably meant to encompass the whole dome, but really just makes it look like he thinks big box stores are a sure sign of civility.]

Privacy is relative. To the best of my knowledge, the wardens are the only ones who have access to what the cameras record, and I doubt that they have any interest in our activities.

[She smiles, a little amused by the hand gestures.] Only the wardens? Well that ain't much at all, but it's still not like someone else couldn't get a hold of it. If someone can see it, anybody can see it.

[Spending the last few months working with hackers has really taught her that there's no such thing as privacy, ever, in a technological world.]

If anyone were to successfully access the wardens' data without being caught, I think they would deserve anything they might find. From what I understand, the wardens make it a difficult task... which is understandable. In a virtual environment like this one, information is the most valuable thing we could take from them.

[Hopefully that whole "virtual environment" thing isn't something that she's hearing for the first time.]

So if it's happened, you mean to say it's not something that would get around, just to make sure the wardens wouldn't know it was happening.

[Not all that surprising either, but she's still doubtful at the level of "privacy" he says they're supposed to have. It's not something she's used to and not something she considers normal. Even with the SA, she'd gone from being watching but thousands and the government, to being in close quarters with a group of people she may as well been walking over to get around.

Which is why she shows so little modesty when she walks from around the rack of pants She's got a strapless bra on and the black pants she'd found, now all she needed was a shirt.]

Hey, you wouldn't happen to know where in this they have the shirts with the high necks, would ya?

If it happened, I would hope that whoever managed the feat would have the sense to be discreet, yes. [But what are the odds of someone here practicing discretion? Not high.]

I am unfamiliar with the layout of the women's clothing department, miss.

[She just got here, so she doesn't quite know what everyone is capable of around here.]

It doesn't have to be a women's shirt. I just need a shirt with a... [She trails off because she realizes why she's been looking for one.] On second thought, never mind that.

[She steps over to the rack she'd seen and grabs the first shirt on it, pulling it off the hanger. To slide it on. Only it's...a bit too small and rides up high on her belly, making her breasts stand out. She laughs.]

Not very one size fits all.

[He tilts his head curiously when she pauses, but doesn't pry. He doesn't laugh at how poorly that top fits, either, although the temptation is great.]

If you are willing to trust my judgment, I think that I can locate something that is a better fit.

I'd appreciate the help. Finding pants just took me half an hour. [Being almost six foot does not make it easy to find women's clothes in your size.]

You are clearly much taller than whoever made these clothes anticipated. [As someone who has the opposite problem--many clothes are made for men who are taller than five-seven--he can sympathize.] Come with me. I know where there are larger shirts.

[She is pulling off the too small shirt right then.] No problem. Just point me in the direction of a shirt that can't be used as a tourniquet. I don't mind my shirts tight but this is a bit much. It doesn't have to be for women either. Just something that fits.

In all fairness, I think that any shirt can be used as a tourniquet if the need arises. [Joking! He knows what she means, and he leads her towards the men's shirts. The larger sizes.] Ah, one thing that I forgot to ask you... what is your name?

[She laughs along with his response. She doesn't mind the humor at all.] The name's Seyn. Seyn Ayliffe. What's yours?

[Oh, he likes her. He likes anyone who's willing to pretend that he's funny.]

Pavel Andreievich Chekov. It's good to meet you, Seyn Ayliffe, regardless of your state of dress. [He holds up a plaid shirt. It's about the right size, but it's more than a little hideous. Unless Seyn is a fan of clashing plaids and novelty t-shirts, she might be better off not accepting his help where fashion is concerned.] This would fit, I think.

[There's nothing wrong with plaid in Seyn's opinion. Her father used to wear it around the Preservation. She's wearing pants that won't clash with it and it looks like it'll fit, so it works more than well enough for her.]

Perfect! [She reaches out to take the shirt from him. And slide it over her shoulders.] This looks like it'll fit just fine. A little baggy but nothing bad, right? Better too loose than too tight.

And it's better to wear a shirt that fits poorly than no shirt at all.

[He gives her a contemplative look.] When I saw your ears, I thought that maybe you were a Vulcan, but you are entirely unlike the Vulcans I have known.

[She nods while she buttons up the flannel but then gives him a curious raise of her eyebrow.] You won't mind me saying I don't know what a Vulcan is, will ya? I've never even visited the Colonies myself, so all I know is whatever you can find on Earth.

Why would I mind? I doubt that you are from exactly the same universe as I am, and there are many discrepancies between universes. But no, they are a humanoid race from a planet that orbits 40 Eridani A, not from Earth. Very logical and serious.

[Seyn wonder if she should have said that differently. He does seem a bit literal.]

Well, ya can be sure now that I'm not one of those. My ears are just a side effect of being an EN. They never did go back all the way after I shifted the first time.

[A bit literal might be a slight understatement.]

Will you mind me saying that I have never heard of an EN? Or, for that matter, a humanoid that could change shapes.

[She snorts.] Not surprised at all since our worlds sound pretty different. EN means Enhanced Needs. It's what happens when the nanotech in a human's body has a defect in the code. That defect can cause a lot of things to happen, but sometimes you get a shifter like me from it.

Then you are entirely human? [Mind. Blown. And unfortunately for Seyn, what she is saying is so interesting that he can't help but ask questions.] What needs are enhanced? Does this nanotechnology work in tandem with DNA, or is it entirely different?
