Day 307 [voice | action]
114 days. That's how long I have been in this place. A drop in the ocean - excuse the pun - to some people here, but still something that I think about on occasion.

[The distinct sound of liquid being poured into a glass can be heard.]

There's something most people don't know about me: I'm dead back home. Well, I'm 'dead' here too, technically speaking. A 560 year old vampire with no legacy to speak of and a whole lot of baggage. Sounds like a plot for a great novel.

[A half-laugh.]

Since I've shared with you lot, why don't you return the favour? Tell me something I don't know about you.

action:

[Rose can be found in the Blood Shack, munching on pretzels and drinking scotch. There's a bottle of it beside her, a quarter of it already gone. Depending on how generous she feels, Rose might be willing to part with some of the alcohol.]

I was shot. [There's a pause before adding more.] It was necessary at the time.

What about you?

Staked. One of the many ways that vampires can be killed.

Not something I ever want to experience again.

I'm so sorry. [She's not sure what being staked is exactly, but it doesn't sound good and she's not about to ask for the details of the method of her death. It's not what's really important to her.]

I hope you don't. Not here.

...Were you attacked?

I'm not going to give anyone a reason to do it to me.

[Even if there was a possibility of some not even needing a reason in the first place.]

Actually, it was a mercy killing. I was attacked by something else - a werewolf. Their bites are fatal to vampires and I suffered for a long time before a friend put me out of my misery. So I guess the staking part wasn't really the worst.

Oh, Rose... [It's hard to hear, but it must have been much harder to go through and remember.]

Mine was something of a mercy killing too. You don't blame the person who did it then? The staking. [Not asking about the werewolf yet.]

I don't blame him at all. There was no cure, I was as good as dead anyway. He was helping me, and I can't fault him for that.

But sometimes I think about what might have happened if I was never bitten by the werewolf in the first place.

Isn't this place something like that? A second chance as if you never had been? I know it isn't home, but...it is life.

It is. This place is my second chance at having a life and getting to do things I never had a chance to do.

I know these feelings I'm having will pass.

I still think about what it would be like if things had been different at home too. I don't know if there's anything wrong with it. If there is, I might be wrong for a very long time.
