[ elena is neither bright-eyed nor bushy-tailed this morning. on the contrary, she’s shaken, unspeakably confused, and even a bit angry. her brown eyes convey that much, though she’s taken some time to look around and calm down -- but only comparatively. ] Look, I’ve heard the message, and the charges against me or whatever. [ she looks off the side, incredulous -- and frankly in shock. ] So, this is an underwater- [ wow she can’t even get ‘prison’ out. saying it makes it real or her crazy, right? ]

You know, let’s just start with: Hey, I’m Elena, and is this some horrible dream?

action.
[ elena doesn't know where else to go. she woke up on the ground in the middle of a park, knowing she wasn't anywhere she should be even before her crimes were being listed off from some foreign device in her ear. she'd flinched and pulled it off, looking at the communicator in her hands, her heart starting to speed in her chest. she took a look around: at the benches, the trees, the shops, and the impossibly high dome ceiling.

now she's up, walking around the so far empty block in a daze. is this damon? she thinks -- or stefan? where is he? she'd can't yet grasp the reality of the situation, struggling to reconcile it with what she knows: vampires.

she stops at the storefront, and the smell of coffee, drawn like a beacon to some activity -- and where people would go, right? she walks inside, her eyes widening at the bots behind the counter. ]

ooc: catch elena oh-so-politely trying to talk to the bots at bean crushers or run into her on the street!

[ because the answer to a frightening, surreal situation is more frightening surreality, this is the first real, alive person elena runs into. she doesn't notice at first, what with the bots in her face, but when she turns at the sound of kitty's voice some hope enters her eyes. that's followed quickly but more confusion and some frustration now.

she tries to temper that with only a little success (it won't get her far) and angles towards the other woman. ] I'm sorry; who are you?

	[ what? ] No, I- I've never been here before. [ elena punctuates this by gesturing to the floor, her palm facing outward. ] What is going on? Why are there robots? [ the robots will make them coffee. okay. she looks at kitty warily; she doesn't want coffee or anything but explanations, and so far this interaction hasn't inspired much in the way of belief or trust -- though in the pause that follows she suspects kitty doesn't want to hurt her. ] I want answers. [ she needs them. she says it not as if that isn't what kitty's offering; she says it to be understood, because she is scared, and kitty is the only person who can help her. ]

	[She takes a breath, softening a bit.] I know. I've been here for [taking a moment to calculate] 282 days and I'm the leader of the Defense Force, so I've got a few answers. I can't promise they're all going to make sense or not sound like something out of sci fi, but it's a lot so I figured sitting and beverages would help. [ it's enough -- even if that two-hundred and eighty-two throws her for another loop. she doesn't understand what any of it means, but elena's jaw sets and some of her resolve and composure returns to her.

she's just done this, hasn't she? just a few days ago: sat across from stefan and demanded answers. her world was changed then, and she handled it. she handles this, for the sake of her sanity and to get back to jeremy if nothing else, walking over to the closest table and sliding into its booth, tucking hair behind her ear as she does.

it's then she realizes she's still holding onto the communicator she'd snatched out of her ear, and she places it on the table, then looks to kitty to join her. ] It said this was a prison.

[She slides it off to match and fortunately she hears English so it's all good.] It did. It wants you to know that you've been very naughty and that your rehabilitation is their priority. Hard to say how much of that's true, but so far we haven't been able to get out, so it's a prison one way or another at least.

The only bars we usually have here are the kind with cocktails. It turns out the buildings have bars that can lower during lockdown, but that hasn't happened very often.

	[ she doubts her rehabilitation is anyone's priority. none of this seems real, or sensible, or logical, and from discerning kitty's tone, she gets the same impression. at least the sensible and logical parts. ] But it's happened. Sure. If bars are coming down there's something big going on and it's theoretically for your safety. Coming here is kind of impossible even for people like me who have a lot of practice with the impossible in our lives before we're shipped in. And then once you're here trying to wrap your mind around that more weird and impossible drops on top of you. Yesterday, we had little flying robots carrying mistletoe that would catch two people in an invisible, shrinking force field that would only release if they kissed. And that's probably one of the better ones.

[She thinks this probably isn't the place to start, but where is? Does she tell her that her body is actually sitting in a pod?]

[ no, it's not the best place to start -- but in kitty's defense, how could anywhere truly be? elena's head in spinning, barely processing the information kitty is giving her. ] So it's less a prison and more some terrible joke? Because no offense but I'm kind of wondering if you're insane, or I'm insane, or someone is. [ she pauses, because despite wanting to believe that, she doesn't. and what it comes down to is this: ] There's no way out of here.

[Kitty smiles a little.] If you didn't think one of us insane then you'd probably be a little insane.

[And then a shake of her head.] None that we've found, but we're looking. I mentioned the Defense Force. It's a group of inmates working together to keep people safe while we're here and to get us out.

Another thing you should know that isn't going to make me sound any saner... You used to be on that team.

[ kitty's comfort she can take, even welcome, even through how shaken she feels it does little. she blinks and swallows at the smile, but even despite that small olive branch, she's stiff and still in her seat, her expression set in a visage of calm control. but she doesn't feel necessarily in control. it's on the tip of elena's tongue to ask more about this defense force, to know what they have found...

any semblance of pretending to know how to handle this is out the window when kitty utters the last. ] What?

Yeah, so, people sometimes disappear for awhile and when they come back sometimes they remember being here and sometimes they don't. Maybe it wasn't you at all, but another girl who looks just like you also named Elena. So, kind of you, but could have had a different life. [But so far she kind of doubts that's the case. Not to mention Kitty and her double have more obvious, surface differences.]

This isn't my first time talking to you.
