day 301 | backdated to mid-day | voice / action;
[ deanna is making this as a voice post, which should tell everyone who knows her how she's really doing, but there's also the problem with the fact that she's stressed. plain and simple. she is stressed and her voice will betray that no matter what she does. she's been using her plexing all morning and it's only marginally helping. she's been out of sorts all day so far, since she woke up, and now that she's more than certain he's actually gone, she knows she needs to put out the word. ]

For those of you who knew him -- I know he was resident here for a very long time, so there are likely more of you who knew him than me -- Data is... [ what? gone? lost in the dimensional stabilizer? ] Data is no longer a resident of this facility. If he had any lingering business that needs to be looked into, I will take on what I can, but I think... for today I will be remaining in the apartment. I apologize to those who might have wanted to come see me at my office. If anyone would like to speak with me, I will be still available, of course. I will simply be remaining in the apartment for now.

[ because right now she needs to stay in the apartment, away from people, where she can quite possibly cry this stress out in peace. though the offer for company is meant, in most cases. ask for her location, friends, and ye may well receive. ]

Thank you for your time.

[Chekov thinks that it's a shame that Data has disappeared. He hadn't gotten to know him particularly well in the handful of days he has been in the dome, of course, but he does regret not having more of an opportunity to talk to him.

Not that his feelings about this are all that important. After watching his crew (and others) come and go and, in some cases, come back again in the City, Chekov is quite adept at accepting disappearances. Deanna, however, may not be. She will cope--he has no doubt about that, as she is professional and seems exceptionally competent--but even those who can overcome hardships using only their own resources can sometimes make use of help.

After she makes an announcement regarding Data's disappearance, Chekov seeks her out.]

[ deanna is not used to it at all, particularly when a good portion of her former bridge crew is up there in a pod somewhere. it was easier to believe that they were home, even if they didn't remember, but knowing that they're all up there... well it's hard to digest.

it's funny but this is the one time she's glad she can't sense everyone's emotions beyond the walls of her apartment. she suspects that might just overwhelm her, even if she filters it out.

when chekov finds her, deanna is sitting in a chair in the kitchen. her fingers tap out a gentle but steady rhythm on the nerve cluster by her ear until she hears his voice. she turns slightly so she can see him, offering a tired smile as her hand slides back down to her lap. she's been doing a lot of emotional filtering if she didn't notice him approaching. better turn that back on. ]

Hello, Lieutenant. How are you doing? [ because that's totally what this is about. ]

[Knowing that your people are trapped in pods is definitely not as pleasant as imagining that they're back home.

Deanna seems distracted, but Chekov can't read her well enough to determine whether or not that means that she would like to be left alone. She'll let him know either way, hopefully. For now, he hangs back, returning her smile with a slightly subdued one of his own.]

I'm well, thank you. [Which Deanna will be able to verify as truth.] Please, you may call me Chekov, if you like--or Pavel, I will respond to either. Whenever I am called by my rank alone, I think that I'm in trouble. [He smiles to make sure she knows that he's joking (even if what he said is completely true).

And, more seriously:]
I am very sorry that the Lieutenant Commander has left.

[ that request and explanation actually does make her smile a bit warmer and she motions for him to join her if he likes to. she could definitely use the company. ]

Then you can call me Deanna. Our apartment has always been on a first name basis. I don't see a reason to change that.

[ with the exception of captain picard but the captain always kept a level of distance that was difficult sometimes to cross. regardless, they were all friends and she sees no reason not to offer the same to chekov. ]

And I would never want you to think you're in trouble unnecessarily. [ joking back because it's better than being serious all the time. ]

As am I. It was easier to believe that those who left the prison were returned home, though in this case, perhaps the reality is the better option. [ data being dead in her time really does change the game, doesn't it? ] Did you get a chance to talk with him?

[He slips into a chair at the kitchen table and immediately wishes that he had thought to bring along something to keep his hands occupied. Oh well--he should give Deanna his full attention anyway.]

Thank you, Deanna. [First names? It's a little strange; on the Enterprise, many people stick to surnames, even in the Captain's inner circle. Still, this could be nice.] I will try not to bring about a situation where I think that I'm in trouble necessarily, also.

[He doesn't know how being in a pod beats being at home. That could be an unpleasant topic, and so he decides not to push.

I spoke with him at length twice, both times about the dome. You are both from the same crew?

[ well, on duty they stuck to rant and surnames, but here it's been a little different. besides that, deanna needs something more personal right now, so first names it is. he's kind of adorable, so earnest. she likes that about him. ]

Yes. We served together for many years, though recently my husband and I were transferred to another starship, so we would have left that crew had we not been brought here. Data is a very good friend of mine and a valuable asset to our lives here. Without him, the Investigative Team will be lacking one of their best members.

[ that isn't a crack on the others. data's an android; it's simple fact. ]

Then your husband was here, also? [And he presumably, has already left. No one else affiliated with Starfleet has attempted to contact Chekov.]

I'm sorry that you have lost a good friend, Deanna. [She doesn't seem to mind physical contact, so he reaches over to pat her hand.] It's difficult in a place like this, where there are no certainties. We cannot be sure that we will see anyone again once they have left, and there is no guarantee that we will be returned to our proper times and universes. I have found, though, that the people that we care for have a way of finding us again and again.

[ that would be because it's just the two of them left now, sadly. maybe the others will return someday, but there's no guarantee. ]

Yes, he was for a short time. He was in one of the pods we saw in the other location. [ an opened one because she had needed to make sure he was still alive, but his body had not been moved.

she doesn't mind the contact at all, smiling slightly at it, in fact. ]
I think you're right about that. Either they find us or we find them. Whatever the case, I have to hope that it will hold true now.

[ it might not in data's case, but at least she can hope. ]

Was the other place you were in like this?

Ah... then that is why you were so troubled, maybe. [Seeing your significant other in a pod could do that. Not that learning that the place you've been trapped is likely an illusion isn't troubling in its own right!]

And I speak from experience when I say that people who are close to us will come back to us, so I know it to be true. My crew found me when I was in another universe--some of them found me more than once! They lost their memories each time they left, but that is irrelevant. [Irrelevant in that it was sad and doesn't further his goal of reassuring Deanna.] Also, Korra--maybe you have met her--was a very close friend in the City, and now we are both here.

[He pauses to consider his answer to her question, drumming his fingers on the table.]

Yes and no. The City was older and more inexplicable. It was necessary to accept that many things that happened there had no scientific explanation.

[ deanna nods sadly. he’s figured it out exactly, not that she’s exactly surprised. he’d seemed very intelligent on the other occasions in which they’d spoken. ] It was difficult for me to see him like that. He is… my Imzadi, my beloved. He is my anchor.

[ not having him here with her is hard enough without going into the mess she was in because she’d lost her empathic abilities for the third time in her life.

his attempt at comforting her is appreciated and it does help. odd that the counselor would need counseling suddenly, but she does appreciate what has been offered her today by so many people. ]
I hope that you are right. Knowing that so many of them are together, and also where my physical self is, does help. It means that while we may seem and feel alone here, we are not truly alone in the physical sense. Others are located nearby, whether or not we can see them. I have to remind myself of that.

[ talking about his city is much preferable to that topic, though. ] I can imagine that was difficult for many, especially Starfleet officers, to deal with.

You will see him again. [He wants to say more, but he doesn't have anything encouraging to impart on the subject of displaced loves. Of all of the people he has met and, consequently, had to say goodbye to, Lucy has been among the most difficult (in part because there is little chance that they will be crossing paths in the future).] In a situation where you are both conscious, I mean, which is much better than knowing that, physically, your bodies are being stored in close proximity to each other.

[But it's kind of sweet that, somewhere beyond a glowing door, they're together?

Maybe it really is best to stick to other topics of conversation.]

Everyone found it hard to accept initially, yes. Even after I had two years to become accustomed to deities and curses and magic houses, it was sometimes tempting to look for sensible causes in nonsensical situations.
