[ deanna is making this as a voice post, which should tell everyone who knows her how she's really doing, but there's also the problem with the fact that she's stressed. plain and simple. she is stressed and her voice will betray that no matter what she does. she's been using her plexing all morning and it's only marginally helping. she's been out of sorts all day so far, since she woke up, and now that she's more than certain he's actually gone, she knows she needs to put out the word. ]

For those of you who knew him -- I know he was resident here for a very long time, so there are likely more of you who knew him than me -- Data is... [ what? gone? lost in the dimensional stabilizer? ] Data is no longer a resident of this facility. If he had any lingering business that needs to be looked into, I will take on what I can, but I think... for today I will be remaining in the apartment. I apologize to those who might have wanted to come see me at my office. If anyone would like to speak with me, I will be still available, of course. I will simply be remaining in the apartment for now.

[ because right now she needs to stay in the apartment, away from people, where she can quite possibly cry this stress out in peace. though the offer for company is meant, in most cases. ask for her location, friends, and ye may well receive. ]

[These are not words she wanted to hear. Data has been the investigative force leader ever since Reid left. He was the one she'd been relying on when it came to DF issues ever since Jack got aggressive and she and Reid broke up. But more than that, she liked him. Maybe they hadn't been super close, but they were getting closer and now... Now he's just in one of those pods, disconnected from the rest.

Jacks's words come back to her about Data being one of the key people to look into the virtual environment angle and for a moment she considers that his disappearance is an intentional move on their part. Zatanna was one of the most powerful and she's gone too. Could magic be a weakness of theirs even in a virtual state with power locks on their real bodies?

But these thoughts don't linger long in the moment. She can always come back to them later. It's not time for that. She may have lost a friend and an ally, but someone else just lost the only person who shared her home.]

I'm sorry.

[ deanna knows they aren't. they aren't words she wanted to say. but she'd thought that the rest of them, especially the defense force, needed to hear sooner rather than later. better now than to find out at a critical moment.

it is true, though, that data was the only person who shared her home. she doesn't know it for sure, but chekov is from an alternate reality, so that means she can't even say he's from her universe. he isn't. well, he is but he isn't. it's the same universe but a different version of it. different things have happened to him.

but even more than that, deanna has known data for a long time. she watched him grow and learn so much over all those years. she knew how badly he wanted to be human, how much he strove to understand and figure out the key to humanity. she knew how he had felt when he had come into possession of the emotion chip, how much closer he had come to being human.

she also knows what his future holds and a part of her can't help but imagine him having gone home to his death. that part hurts most of all.

it's a few minutes before she responds and her voice is tired and thick. ]

As am I. I know he was very important to a lot of people here. [ and to the defense force. ]

Still is. [Fixing that tense for you, but she gets it. Maybe people are locked up in pods somewhere in a more tangible version of the prison, but that didn't make Data any less lost to them right now.]

You want some company? [She's not sure she's really the one who should be making this offer. She's not sure who Deanna's friends are here other than that Data was an important one, but Deanna has helped her before and she doesn't much care that it was her job. In Kitty's mind that's still a choice. She could have had a different job or abandoned it upon arrival. She didn't.]

	Chocolate it is. And I know how that goes. Somehow I'm always out of cigarettes when I really need one. [It's easy to think the shops are nearby and she can always get more even though sometimes that's not true.] Let me know which place is yours and I'll be there soon. I'll consider myself quite fortunate, then.

[ there isn't much here that's her personal touch, at least not in the main rooms. mostly, there's still a lot of influence left from the other starfleet officers who were here, most notably captain picard and data, who were here the longest of any of them. seven's alcove is still in one of the bedrooms, but deanna hasn't really wanted to touch that. ]

This way. [ she'll head on into the kitchen, after relieving kitty of some of the stack in her arms. ] Can I get you anything while you're here?

[ probably not, as kitty's brought quite a lot as it is, but it's still nice to ask. ]

Mm. [ she gives a small nod to emphasize the affirmation. ] As far as I'm aware, every Starfleet officer who has been a resident of the prison recently has lived here or nearby. It's... quiet now, compared to when I arrived.

An alternate reality, perhaps? [ just a guess. because it’s the only option that makes any sense at all.

admittedly, she’s surprised at kitty’s words, enough to draw a small smile from her, but the sentiment is accurate. at least, from what she can figure. ] It does. Losing friends, companions, or acquaintances doesn’t get much easier, despite how we might wish it would.

[ and the down side is she can’t even offer much in the way of hope for data. she knows what his future holds. he has a few years, but… it is what it is. perhaps him being up in a pod is the lesser evil. ]

Right. I mean, we all are for the most part, but worlds similar enough to mine that I recognized some of the players like my old mentor except he barely recognized me. Or my ex-husband who thought I was his girlfriend. [Shaking that off.]

I guess we can't even play the pretend game where we say they're in a better place now. Not that it's always true with everyone who comes here, but it seems like it would have been for Data.

	Actually...? No. We didn't get to a lot of personal history details. [She wouldn't have minded though. She liked him. Trusted him. She might feel some disappointment or regret coming from her.] I mean, I know a little about the Enterprise from him and some of the others. Starfleet. Federation. I know some definitions.
