Day 296 — Real MarinaNova — Busted
[ Did you really think you'd be allowed to explore freely to your hearts content? This was never meant to happen and it certainly wasn't meant to last — before long the security system kicks into gear, unleashing a veritable swarm of spider robots designed to encourage and hoard reluctant prisoners. You're welcome to try and escape or even destroy a few, but they'll keep coming in overwhelming numbers, armed with tiny tasers that zap and prod until every single one of you has been sniffed out and brought to the exercise yard.

The Engineers are waiting for you there. You were brave enough to exploit a security breach. Perhaps your rewards will be a one-on-one with the very people responsible for keeping you here? Or perhaps this is just a way to buy time. Either way, you'll be stuck out here until they decide to end it. ]

(OOC: This mingle is for those who went through the doors only. Feel free to mingle amongst yourself or approach the Engineers if you're brave enough! They will have threads for this purpose here: SMITH and MARY

EVENT INFORMATION | REAL MARINANOVA INFORMATION.)

No, there is nothing artificial about my intelligence. I'm one of the engineers.

Ah--so talking to you is far superior than talking to them. [Like he knows what he's talking about. Chekov thought that the wardens were the engineers' dome-avatars, or something.] What do you like to be called?

How about you just call me Engineer Superior? You wouldn't be able to pronounce my name. [And she's not about to offer Smith and have to go changing her cover.]

I wouldn't want to offend you with mispronunciations, Engineer Superior.

Are you the one who developed the cells that we woke in? I am interested in knowing how the machinery here is able to interact with our minds, and how our minds are able to exchange information when we are unconscious. Is there a network that we are connected to? Are you able to monitor it personally, or is the only way you are able to interact with us?

What makes you think any of that is what's happening at all? [Stop picking up on things you weren't meant to see or understand!]

I am guessing, and I would ask you if anything I'm guessing is correct, but I think you would be unmotivated to be honest.

I've heard honesty is the best policy, but I'm never sure I've seen the numbers to support that. Let's just say I was integrally involved in the development of the pods and the machinery you see and experience.

I am not so certain that you will find an argument in favor of honesty in numbers. Logically, though, it must be preferable to deceit.

This is all very clever--the machinery, and allowing us to experience the dome while keeping us confined--but what is your motivation? [Not that he expects an answer. It's worth asking?] It would almost be simpler, I think, to create an actual dome and put us there than it would be to sustain our bodies and project our minds into a shared environment, unless you have a reason to want us comatose.

If that was the situation—and I'm not confirming that it is—then the development of well-tested technology would have many uses.

I agree that it would have its uses, but how would you test such technology? There are many things that can go wrong when tampering with consciousness. You would want expendable test subjects, maybe people who can be abducted from their home universes and convinced that they deserve to be placed in whatever program you create.

[It's probably wildly obvious that he's just throwing ideas out there to see what will happen.]

My, aren't you imaginative? [So dry.]

[He sighs, then smiles.] Maybe we could talk about you. Where are you from, Engineer Superior?

[He's going to say no reflexively, but then he actually pauses to consider it.] Considering how different you are--physically and maybe metaphysically--from any other being I have met, that has the potential to be interesting.

I think I'll pass on all accounts and ask you to make your way back to the facility you woke up in.
