Day 296 — Real MarinaNova — Exploring
[You have an adventurer's spirit, or maybe you're just following the crowd, whatever the case, you've left the central core behind.

What else is there to see and do and find? Hungry? Maybe you can find yourself a delicious pill to eat in the cafeteria. Or maybe you want to spend your time and energy breaking into a closet in the dormitory. Explore. Make some memories. You may even end up keeping them.

But how much longer do you think it will be before someone puts you back in those pods you so recklessly abandoned?]

(OOC: This mingle is for those who went through the doors only. The locale section will detail the areas you can explore. Please note that some areas specify barriers that would prevent exploration! The next one will be for encountering the engineers in their natural habitat. EVENT INFORMATION | REAL MARINANOVA INFORMATION.)

[Chekov is doing all of the exploring that a genius without tools or an ability to pick locks can do. He has inspected the dormitories (nothing of interest was found, as all of the interesting things appear to be kept behind locks), taken a chance on one of pills in the cafeteria (filling, if not satisfying), and contemplated the important-looking sphere suspended out of reach above the core. He is very certain that everything worth finding is being kept behind locks and walls. It's frustrating. Intriguing, but undeniably frustrating. The lack of success will not dissuade him from inspecting every inch of the facility... or, for that matter, convince him to stop trying to get to all of the inches that aren't readily accessible.

Wherever you are, it's reasonable to assume that a nosy little Russian isn't too far away.]

[There may be nothing of consequence behind the locked storage room in the dormitory, but that hasn't stopped Kitty from taking a crack at it with some carefully aimed and timed high kicks to the door since there aren't many solid objects to hit it with. Necessary violence!]

[Chekov puts his fruitless investigation on pause to watch Kitty. Even if she doesn't force anything open--and it would be nice if she did, since he really wants to see what's locked up--he quite likes observing acts of badassery that he'll never be able to perform.]

Does this method usually work for you?

[She pauses mid-kick before making contact again and relaxes her body once more before looking at him.] It's been known to. I couldn't find much in the way of tools to help out.

It's as if someone would prefer that we not dismantle anything. [He can't imagine why!] Does it take much strength to do that, or could I feasibly be taught how to open things that way?

I like that you want a lesson before you even see if it works or not. [She shifts again, leg coming up and she applies the force just so and there's a crack as the door gives way.]

See, this was really the time to be impressed. As far as strength goes, even if I had more than usual it would be cut off right now. They're inhibiting our powers.

Even if it fails to work, it looks very cool. [And there, it worked!

And he is impressed, thank you, but seeing what's inside is more important than displays of impressed-ness.]
They're inhibiting powers here that they would not inhibit in the dome? Why not take powers away all the time?

Don't know. [Looking inside what appears to be a pretty unimpressive storage room.] I guess because there was no danger to them in us having them.

[Why did they even lock this stuff up? He pokes at a flip flop. Maybe it's secretly something interesting.]

But there is danger to them in us having powers here? [He looks around for something else to get into.] That would mean that there are things here that they don't want us to interfere with.

[Maybe just to see who would break in. She inspects the very uninteresting contents, looking for anything hidden beneath or behind them. Knocking walls to hear if they're hollow and all that.]

That's kind of my hope. Could just be hope talking though.

[info]candothat
2014-12-07 11:42 pm UTC (link)
It's reasonable. Hope alone is not that reasonable, usually. [But he's starting to think that trying to break into every compartment is less than reasonable. Maybe whoever's in charge wants to keep them distracted.]

Kitty. Does anyone believe that we are really kept here for rehabilitation?

[Korra picks up one of the pills and eyes it suspiciously.]

Aren't pills supposed to come in bottles? That say what they're for?

When those pills contain medicine and aren't provided by mysterious beings who can redirect our lives at will, yes. [He pops one into his mouth, apparently unconcerned about being poisoned.] If I die hideously, you will know not to eat them.

Chekov! [Reckless! But the pill's already down his throat, so Korra's not going to disregard his sacrifice.]

.......so what does it do?

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]candothat

It seems that the pill's effects are not instantaneous, but I think that they are food. Not so long ago, the food rations available to space travelers were similar to this. [He pats her shoulder reassuringly.] Even if I've guessed wrong, I doubt that the wardens would allow us to access anything that can kill us so easily.

How can a pill be medicine? [Rhetorical question.] You have been here for longer than I have. What reason would anyone have to keep our bodies in status while our minds are sharing a collective hallucination?

[He's doing that thing where he assumes people are either psychically keeping up with his line of reasoning or have reached the same conclusions as him given what they've seen. Korra is, of course, free to remind him that this is not correct.]

[She figured that much out, thanks. Though the "hallucination" trips her up as there's a blip in the translation and she has to spend a minute figuring out why he said "collective rainbow".]

I don't know. You're the space genius.

["Collective rainbow." Sounds nice. Cozy. Not at all like a prison.]

Yes, I didn't forget, but I can think of no reason to store living people. [He's a little sulky. Not having ideas is frustrating.] Being here makes me miss the City. I think I was beginning to understand the deities.

[Korra misses the City too. Naga, Jinora, the animals, the Beach House, Hei... And she definitely gets what Chekov means. It sucks knowing someone is messing with you but not knowing why. At least with the City, they all know it was cruel, capricious curiosity. (Of the City itself and not the deities as they'd assumed, but whatever.)

She still gives Chekov a You’re crazy look. Understand the deities? Seriously?]

What? I didn't say that I sympathized with them, only that I could sometimes understand them. This place has different rules, and no one knows who is in control or what is motivating them. Is it the wardens? The engineers? Someone else, maybe?

[He sighs and, certain that the pill is almost definitely not going to kill him, decides to wander.] I think there are buttons in the room where we woke up that I neglected to push.

[ Data is lacking in his usual degree of strength, reflexes, and more highly tuned senses, so he's exploring a bit less efficiently than usual. He hadn't found Chekov in the central core, but he does find him once he expands his exploration to the dormitory area.

His emotion chip, of note, has been deactivated. Mercifully, that ability was left intact. ]

Lieutenant?

Lieutenant Commander!

[Chekov acknowledges Data with a nod, reluctant to stop prying at this wall seam (it might give if he's persistent enough!) to salute. Is saluting even a thing that he should be doing? That seems terribly formal, but he doesn't now Data well enough to assume that informality is welcome.]

May I ask what you think of this, sir?

[ He arches a brow slightly; were his chip active, he might be somewhat amused at the salute. It's not necessary, but he does give a small nod.

And as to the question, well - ]

I would consider it likely that we are now within the true prison. I had been exploring the possibility that the MarinaNova we perceived was in fact a simulation, along with Doctor Spencer Reid and Rebecca Crane, two members of the Defense Force's Investigative Team. That appears to be a reasonable conclusion of our present circumstances.

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]candothat

[Thankfully, this whole true-prison thing isn't entirely news to Chekov, who has concluded that something along those lines is the only reasonable explanation (beyond hallucinating or being in an otherwise altered state of mind, that is) for all of this. Kitty was also kind enough to mention the idea in passing.]

I would like to know as much about what led you to think this as possible, sir, when time permits. [He gives up on the wall seam. Without tools, getting into anything is proving frustratingly difficult.] For now, are there orders you would like to issue?
