{ day 293 }
[ action ]

[ This is not the syndicate laboratory. The boy looks around himself in a panic before noticing the message playing on the headset he's been given. The welcome message makes sense, he guesses; the list of crimes, not so much. There are a couple that he can understand why, in theory, somebody might accuse him of them, but he has no idea where most of the rest of them came from.

He's never even driven a car before, let alone without a license. Or while asleep.

And he's never heard of any MarinaNova Asylum. Well, that's easily solved with a simple lookup. Standing right there in the middle of the sidewalk in Sector 2, paying no mind to the storm damage surrounding him, he closes his eyes and spreads his arms to his sides.

Nothing.

Absolutely nothing. He can't access the Gaia Library. This... is not good. ]

[ video ]

[ The boy on the video feed is visibly disheveled. His hair is a mop-like mess and there's a look of disorientation in his eyes that goes beyond the usual new arrival. ]

What is this place? I can't look anything up. I need to-- my research, I can't be here--

My work is my whole life. I've never needed anything else. I would be happy to avoid working with other people if I could.

Then you can't know what you're missing.

All I'm missing is my research. The longer I remain here the further behind I fall!

Yeah? And then what happens?

And then I won't be able to get it done...! What kind of question is that?

So you don't get it done? Someone gives you an F minus? The world falls out of orbit? People die? You lose a scholarship? What's the trauma?

My research is my entire life! What am I supposed to do if I can't go home and finish it?!

Continue it here? Or figure out what life has to offer outside of research?

I can't continue it here. [ Wow, "outside of research"? He scowls so hard. ]

Is finding some other way to spend your time really that scary? Haven't you ever wondered what it would be like to go do...anything else?

Aren't you missing out on some prime teenage rebellion?

Which part are you missing here? Not a teenager?

[ ...he's not actually sure. Probably? ]

Your usage of the phrase "teenage rebellion", as though it is a standard procedure for teenagers.

Sure. Testing boundaries. I'm sure there are all kinds of books on it.

If only I were able to access them.

That sounds completely unproductive.

They'll probably reopen the library. They like it when we do rehab-y things like study.

And then I could look up such useless things as "teenage rebellion".

Does this library have books on the prison itself?

Dare to dream.

As far as the books on the prison go, not that I've seen. Sounds like something they'd probably keep from us, but I guess it's possible. I don't know everything about those books and they're always changing.
