{ day 293 }
[ action ]

[ This is not the syndicate laboratory. The boy looks around himself in a panic before noticing the message playing on the headset he's been given. The welcome message makes sense, he guesses; the list of crimes, not so much. There are a couple that he can understand why, in theory, somebody might accuse him of them, but he has no idea where most of the rest of them came from.

He's never even driven a car before, let alone without a license. Or while asleep.

And he's never heard of any MarinaNova Asylum. Well, that's easily solved with a simple lookup. Standing right there in the middle of the sidewalk in Sector 2, paying no mind to the storm damage surrounding him, he closes his eyes and spreads his arms to his sides.

Nothing.

Absolutely nothing. He can't access the Gaia Library. This... is not good. ]

[ video ]

[ The boy on the video feed is visibly disheveled. His hair is a mop-like mess and there's a look of disorientation in his eyes that goes beyond the usual new arrival. ]

What is this place? I can't look anything up. I need to-- my research, I can't be here--

The ocean should make no difference. Meaning... [ It's the wardens who are to blame. ] The wardens possess an unfathomable amount of power.

Scary.

But also probably accurate.

[She'd certainly buy it.]

Then it's them I need to defeat.

Even without access to the Library, I am still a genius. This should be no problem.

You're planning to take on the Wardens? I...wouldn't do that if I were you.

Of course I am. Are you content with this?

Never said that.

I'm just saying I wouldn't take on the Wardens if I were you. They have really bizarre ideas when it comes to punishment.

[Not cruel or sadistic or even torturous. Just...bizarre.]

Sure, you do. You might not like it, but it's certainly better than the most likely alternative.

On the other hand, if you do happen to go through with your plan of attack...I don't suppose you can record some of it? The free entertainment around here is pretty lacking.

What do you believe is the most likely alternative?

Well, let's see...

If I had to predict, based on whether or not Connie or V are the ones greeting us that particular day? Punishments could range anywhere from having to sleep outside for a week. In the octopus-tornados. Or you might have to star in your own reality show. No privacy at all. Except maybe in the bathroom--at least, we hope.

Oh, or you could end up with some bizarre trade for a few days and have to help people build box cars or canoes or something.

[She's only mostly joking.]

Those are punishments? That sounds ridiculous.

Exactly. You're more likely to die of embarrassment around here than freak accident.

And this is enough to dissuade people from rebellion?

Not entirely, no.

There's also the part where we're still trapped way, way under the water and have yet to actually figure out how to get in and out of here. People just show up at random all the time. Robot Wardens aren't the first thing that comes to mind when you think of "random"

The most obvious option is to attempt to destroy the dome itself... [ But if it can block his access to the Gaia Library, it must be made of something incredible. ]

...you did register the "underwater" part, right?

Not sure about you, but most of us really, really like breathing.

Some sort of protective container would be in order. I once read about these things called "submarines" -- something like that would serve our purpose.

Not at this depth.

[She'd forgotten how long ago it had been. When she discovered confirmation that it wasn't just water the dome was protecting them from. It was an intensive water pressure that would crush any one of them instantly should the barrier ever be compromised.]

No? Then something more durable might be needed... If only I could perform a lookup on the required materials.

Well, we have a library, but I'm not sure how much use it could be.

Best of luck to you on that.

[Significantly less sarcasm than before; prior conversation aside, she actually meant it.]
