day 267 | open video & action
[ Lal's never seen an actual ocean before. Or a blue sky, an underwater dome... Almost everything in MarinaNova is totally new to her. That is why her first transmission comes some time after she's arrived. As urgent as it is that she is returned to The Enterprise, there wasn't exactly anyone around curb her curiosity, or answer the multitude of questions she's storing up for later.

But now, she finally starts her video from the shoreline of sector one. For all intents and purposes, she seems to be an ordinary young woman. Except for the odd and slightly mechanical movements of her head.
]

Father.

[ She doubts he's actually here in the asylum with her, but she has to make sure. She pauses, cocking her head to one side just a bit. Being used to the starship's communication methods, she expects an immediate answer. When none comes, she continues on. ]

Asylum. Protection from danger. A facility where care is given to the sick or insane.

I am not sick. This is not The Enterprise. This is not Galor IV. I do not know of a planet with an ocean named "Saylar". Why... was I taken from The Enterprise? Why was I charged with crimes? Captain Picard stated that I had not done anything wrong. So why am I here?

It is a mistake. Since it is a mistake, I've concluded that the logical action would be to return to the surface of this planet. I will do that now.

[ Obviously, the best way to do that would be through the ocean. She hasn't yet realized that the water before her is independent of the dark sea outside the dome, so she's going to start marching forward purposefully. She'll keep going, eventually sinking below the surface unless she's stopped. ]

[ It would figure that Data isn't near Sector 1 when this broadcast is taking place - his patrol for the Defense Force is on the opposite side of the dome. He does, however, dedicate the small bit of passive attention necessary to monitor the network regularly, and so he sees this almost immediately.

The instant emotional response that the emotion chip provides him with is one of the most powerful he has experienced thus far; rather, several of the most intense, a number of distinct emotional signals that flood his pathways, halting most other processes for a few long fractions of a second. Certainly, given the temporal discrepancies noted among those present, it would stand to reason that this had always been a possibility, but he has found that rational knowledge does not often affect potent emotional responses. Certainly, it had not prepared him to see her - his daughter - functional, alive and here. While he can't deny the more positive responses, there is a current of concern there as well; will he simply be forced to experience losing her again, now capable of feeling that loss as it occurs?

As he activates the feed, he is already moving toward Sector 1, a simple location to identify from her feed. Initially, it is only important that he reach out and get her attention. To let her know that he's here. ]

Father.

[ Ever the obedient daughter, she ceases her journey through the water immediately at the sound of his voice. While she understands (or rather, assumes) the situation will be more easily remedied with Data's instruction, her expression doesn't change. There's not yet any hint of the emotions that once preceded her demise. ]

Should I continue to the surface of this planet?

[ She's come a long way in the few short weeks she's been alive, but not so far as to immediately realize that he may be in the facility too, since he's able to communicate on this network. ]

[ It is with some surprise that he notes the increase in emotional feedback produced by the single word with which she addresses him. He dedicates a process to monitoring those responses, and whether it will be necessary for him to deactivate the chip - it may make it more difficult to assess her condition, but he would certainly prefer not to. ]

You will not be able to reach the planet's surface in that manner.

[ The lack of emotional display on her part is noted as a positive observation, given the circumstances preceding the cascade failure. ]

If you return to the shore, I will be there momentarily.

Yes, Father.

[ Rather than questioning him now, she'll comply with his request, and wait until he comes to retrieve her. Of course, she may find herself distracted here and there after halting the transmission from her end, but she does manage to return to dry land in acceptable amount of time. When he does arrive, he'll find her standing just off the edge of the water, staring up at the simulated sky. ]

[ It's not long before he reaches the beach in sector 1 and spots her; he may not be considerably faster than a human on foot, but what speed advantage he does have is further amplified by the sense of urgency propelling him. And then there she is; here, in front of him. Again the emotion chip's feedback intensifies, despite the fact that this was the intended and anticipated outcome of his traveling to this sector. For a brief moment, he simply looks at her in a sort of astonishment, before he tilts his head slightly and speaks up to, hopefully, take her attention away from the sky. ]

Lal.

[ The chip's intense responses aside, or perhaps because of them, he is a bit hesitant - concerned. He's certainly more than happy to see her, and it merges with the surprise visible on his face; It's accompanied by a great deal of caution, however, which motivates his most imperative query. ]

Are you functioning properly?

[ Her attention is snapped away from the sky just as he speaks her name. All things considered, it's fortunate that there's nothing more on her face than a placid half smile. ]

I'm functioning within normal parameters.

[ Honestly, her own functions are the least of her concerns at the moment, as she knows no reason to think otherwise.

And now that she's actually focused on her father, she appears almost bothered by something. She moves closer to Data, stopping only when she's barely an inch away from him. And again, she inclines her head to one side.
]

Father, why have you changed your face? Why are you also equipped with this type of communication device? Why are you and Commander Riker also in this asylum?

[ Those are currently the most pressing questions. Of course, there are more. Several more. But, the concept of restraint has finally started to settle in, at least partially. ]

[ That satisfies his immediate concern, for the time being, though he will certainly need to run thorough diagnostics of her systems himself - as best he can, with what he's managed to set up here.

His head tilts as she questions him, and a brow arches - fondly. He is pleased to be questioned, which he had not quite anticipated. His questions had always seemed to annoy those around him who were capable of such a response, but Lal's do not have that effect on him. He does note her restraint, though - paired with the contractions she has employed, it's a fairly accurate means by which he can pinpoint her present state of development. And on answering, he hesitates just a fraction of a second to decide how best to answer. ]

It would appear that those who maintain this facility are capable of taking individuals from their timelines of origin at various chronological points. I was taken from a point in time which would be approximately seven years, three months after what is most likely your current chronological point. A great deal has happened in that time. Similarly, Commander Riker was also brought here, as was Counselor Troi, and we have all been equipped with these devices, as they are provided to all individuals upon arrival.

[ He has no doubt that she has more questions, but - ]

Lal, perhaps it would be best if you would accompany me to the quarters we have established within the facility. You may continue to posit any query as you wish, but I would like to ensure that you were not affected in any adverse way by the means through which you were brought here.

[ Her head angles in the other direction, and her mouth sets into a thin line as she takes his answers in. As she does, more gaps in her understanding of the situation are formed. On some fronts, she's able to determine the most probable answers to the new queries. But, at this stage, while still growing and learning, there are many questions that are beyond her.

Though, she is able to restrict any outbursts until Data indicates he has finished speaking.
]

Yes, I will accompany you... home.

[ Because, if he isn't immediately arranging their departure, it must be home. As soon as he begins to lead, she will follow along with him. Then she will immediately begin verbalizing questions in no real order of relevancy. ]

Father, why is it called a convenience store? Would using a replicator not be more convenient? Why was I not taken from the same point as you? How were we brought here? How long have you been in this facility? How, exactly, does this action aid in recovering lost memories for humans?

[ She demonstrates snapping her fingers. ]

[ For the time being, it's home. So with a nod, he begins to lead, listening to each of her questions. A slight surge of feedback from the emotion chip floods his pathways when she asks why they were not taken from the same chronological point - though, as it is related to their present situation, it is one of the queries that takes precedence. Aside from a frown, he manages to restrain any further outward response. ]

We have not yet been able to determine the precise means by which we are brought here, nor the criteria by which those responsible choose the individuals, nor the points from which they are taken. I have been present for 83 days. Captain Picard and Lieutenant Commander LaForge were present for some time as well, though they have since left the facility - also by means which we have not yet identified.

[ Then he furrows his brow, and tilts his head slightly. ]

You will find that the technology available to us within the facility is not as advanced as that to which we are accustomed to finding on board the Enterprise, though it is reasonable to assume that far more advanced technology is employed by those who oversee the asylum. As such, there are no replicators for our use here.

[ He considers the responses he has provided thus far for a moment... ]

Perhaps it would be most efficient if we were to complete a neural transfer of information regarding the nature and functionality of the facility.

[ Though, he finds, he is a bit apprehensive about putting additional stress on her matrix. ]

After we have completed a full analysis of your systems.

[ She steals a glance at her father, momentarily puzzled by his choice in facial expression.

That's the second time he's indicated a possible problem with her functions. She's never known him to be indirect, so the process dedicated to discerning the reasoning behind his statements yields few results. If the method in which prisoners are brought to MarinaNova is dangerous to her systems, there is no obvious reason for Data to omit the specifics. Though, it may all become clear after the transfer.
]

Should I hold further queries until the transfer has been completed?

[ The emotion chip is something he'll have to explain, he's certain. That, of course, would be a topic better addressed in conversation than via a transfer. Somewhat ironic, that now he can feel and she is without the ability. And that he must hope that she remains in that state...

He offers a small, reassuring smile. That expression, at least, has not particularly changed from her time.]

For queries regarding the facility, perhaps that would be best. There is also a great deal that we should discuss, aside from that which I would include in such a transfer.

[ A momentary pause, as he arches a brow. ]

Lal, what is the most recent memory that you possess, prior to your arrival here?

Counselor Troi. I... desired to find Counselor Troi. An Admiral from Starfleet came. He doubted that you were teaching me properly, Father. I did not wish to relocate to Galor IV. Then I was here.

[ Her brow furrows as she pauses there. There is a problem with that memory, it's difficult for her to recall those last seconds before reactivating in MarinaNova, but she can't discern why. Perhaps this is why he wanted the analysis, and maybe it is similar to the problems humans experience with memories. ]

I do not remember being deactivated. But... I can't detect a problem with my functions.

[ After meeting the Admiral, seeking Counselor Troi... the early signs of her failure should already be evident, but they aren't. Is it possible that, within the facility, she is able to function?

He nods at her last statement. ]

My experience was much the same. I had no recollection of being deactivated, and detected no gap in my memory, but I also lacked any explanation for how I had come to be here. There has not yet been any individual who can conclusively explain the manner in which they came to be here.

[ If he doesn't have an answer for how they came to be in MarinaNova, then there is no reason to dedicate further resources to that aspect of the problem. ]

Father, I wish to help the others go back to their homes. There are humans who do not want to stay here. Helping them is our function, correct?

[ The incline of his head that he gives in response is somewhat tentative. ]

It is, and securing means for all those present to go home as they wish is a goal toward which we are working.

[ His head tilts slightly, considering. ]

The first step to providing any assistance is to gather and analyze information. The inmate population is in a vulnerable position in the facility; we must be certain that we are well-prepared to take any action.

[ She may not be exceptionally effective, but it is a task that would allow her to develop those abilities - and there is no real reason to not allow her to try, his general concerns aside. ]

You can begin doing so with the knowledge with which I will provide you.

[ And as he continues to lead her, their journey will take them to the apartments in sector 2, where he will guide Lal into the building and to the quarters which the members of Starfleet present currently share. ]

[ For once she's quiet. Satisfied that many of her questions will be answered with the transfer her father will provide, she focuses on their route instead. The processes recording it and plotting possible alternatives are given the highest priority... Until the two of them are inside. ]

It's different.

[ Not that she expected a replica of their quarters from the Enterprise, but she still hasn't gotten the selective verbalization thing down. Especially when distracted, which she currently is. She finally wanders away from his side, stopping to inspect anything that catches her attention. ]

Yes. It is.

[ He stays still as he watches her, allowing her the freedom to explore for the moment. As stable as currently appears, he cannot quite shed his concerns - though there is no reason to curtail her curiosity. Watching her explore her surroundings in this manner is just as enlightening an experience as it had initially been, only underscored by the bittersweet emotional responses he is currently processing. ]

As I had mentioned, we do not have access to the level of technology available on the Enterprise, nor are our living situations the same. The common areas of this apartment are shared with the other Starfleet personnel present, in order to enable us to more easily work together as we endeavour to understand the facility more thoroughly.

[ She takes his words in, only faintly grasping what inconveniences the difference in technology will mean for them. For her, as long as he is present the living conditions are completely acceptable, despite the change. The presence of other Enterprise crewmates is also a "comfort", as she believes she still has much to learn from all of them.

She finally turns to face her father again, satisfied with her visual assessment of the room, for the time being. When she speaks again, it's with a probably familiar and oddly forceful tone, marking her eagerness to learn and be of use.

[ All of that will become clear soon enough; the equipment he and Seven have been relying on for necessary maintenance is acceptable, but it's rigged from what they could find. It suffices, but it's certainly not the lab on the Enterprise. He nods. ]

Yes. Before that, Lal, there is something which we should discuss. Regarding our temporal discrepancy.

No.

[ At the moment, he truthfully doesn't think that there is. Lal is here, functioning, talking to him and understanding - there is no sign of malfunction, and he'll confirm her stability along with the completion of the transfer. But this should come first. ]

However, there is a great deal that has happened during that time, and there are developments of which you should be made aware.

[ His head shifts, tilting to one side just a bit - so much like her movement, even if it's become a bit more understated. ]

You had inquired as to the reason behind my changing facial expressions; the answer is that they are an involuntary outward manifestation of emotional responses, which I am now capable of experiencing.

How?

[ A curt question. But, by her reasoning, if her father can experience emotion, that must mean it's possible for her too. Of course, she doesn't yet know the dangers, or how it's currently not likely that anyone could duplicate the process that made it possible. Still, thanks to his guidance, it is her ultimate goal as it was once his. ]

It would seem that reports of Doctor Soong's death had been erroneous. In the years since the destruction of Omicron Theta, he had worked to create a chip which would enable me to process basic human emotion.

[ He would certainly reason that to be her goal as well - one that is more than simply a challenge, given how emotion's unintended manifestation preceded her cascade failure. It doesn't even enter into whether it would be possible to replicate his father's work; even if he did, trying to incorporate it into her matrix would risk her loss, again. Even he had just barely managed to adapt to the chip. ]
