Surprise.

First love. We were young. I was younger. Life was short. [Shrugging. There's more to it than all of that and yet that also sums it up pretty well. Life at home was hard and often violent and brief. He was the one who rescued her. He made her feel safe and even though he became unstable at the end—the world's and hers, she had loved him. She couldn't have been as angry at him as she was if she hadn't. Moving on was definitely a messy process, but it's been half a year now which sounds like nothing to some people but when you live as much in the moment as she's used to it can feel like a lifetime.]

[ elena can only imagine what more there is to it. isn't there always? for elena, she can't imagine marriage - maybe once, but immortality has a way of changing your choices. life isn't short; settling down isn't forever. she doesn't realize until that moment how that's changed for her. (and how she doesn't necessarily want it to. never did.) ]

	He found out his little sister wasn't dead after all and kind of came unhinged at a time when we needed every hinge firmly in place. First, we lost all our students because he didn't go back for them like he said he would. Next, I wound up here. And then I found out I was just a few seconds away from him accidentally killing me. [ elena recalls being on the receiving end of that treatment - it never worked, kitty's intent aside. it became obvious to elena kitty had been through a lot and that was how to dealt with it. it never made elena care or want to care less - and this doesn't either.

she smiles, casts her eyes to the ground at kitty's question. it with some tired, sharp humor that she does. ] What's a boring life? [ not hers. not kitty's. not a lot of people here. ]
