He feels raw and exhausted and although he's pushed himself to go out and get some clothes that aren't borrowed from Karev's closet, he's so not in a place where public announcements are possible.

[ despite the static, piter knows reid's voice— the instant he hears it, it's as though a switch has been flipped in his mind. that is most certainly spencer reid's voice, and with those four static-choked words, all the data temporarily expunged from piter's mind returns from where it was sectored off: each conversation, each observation, and each delicate move upon the chessboard becomes relevant again, necessary and useful once more.

piter reaches for his communicator responds in kind; no blue-in-blue eyes appear to stare at reid, but the ice in piter's voice is unmistakable, nearly the same as it has always been— only very, very slightly thawed. ]

[ A few days ago (or a year and a half, depending) he would've found, if not comfort then at least familiarity in that cold voice. Now he has to make an effort to not end the call prematurely. Piter is too observant, knows him too well by now and it's in this moment that Reid really understands the dangers of that gambit. Before, he had a lot less to lose. Now he's lost everything. ]
