260 — Olympics mingle
[ It is a gorgeous day down here at the bottom of the sea and what better day to have an Olympics! The obstacle course is set up, the towels are fluffed, the medals have been polished to a high sheen and every orange within sight has been sliced.

Okay. Maybe not every orange. A lot of them. Enough to fuel a whole prison full of athletes, so athlete away! We can't waste all these oranges! ]

((ooc: Event information can be found here! There will be no individual threads for the separate events, but you are encouraged and welcome to detail in your headers or starter tags what your characters are up to! ))

[Though in general she's skeptical of the Wardens' activities, Number One approves of this particular event. Encouraging physical fitness among the inmates is a wise move, and she expects the exertion will generally improve moods-- it might do something for the sense of restlessness brought about by extended imprisonment.

So, she is taking advantage of the activities. She swims laps in the morning, wearing a modest one-piece swimsuit in the closest approximation she could secure of command gold (both because it's habitual, and because she knows it suits her); later, she runs the obstacle course, focusing more on endurance than speed. She takes a few breaks to travel the dome and spectate here and there, as well, surveying the range of activities with interest and munching oranges.

Later in the afternoon, you'll find her trying to gather up enough competitors for a volleyball match.]

[Well, look at this—an athletic-looking young man who is on the sidelines just asking to be encouraged into volleyball.]

Interested in playing?

[The only regrettable thing about this athletic festival, she thinks, is that there is too much to choose from; it's difficult to field a full team when there are so many exciting distractions. But perhaps if they start bouncing a ball around, people will get interested...]

[A beat or two.] Volleyball? In the competition? [It's not that hard to pick up. He just hadn't thought of joining in.]

We don't have enough for a formal game, of course, but perhaps a little practice would attract more.

Right... I guess I could. You, uh, you're really interested in competing?

There are benefits to participating in the sanctioned activities, and of the team sports this is the one I find preferable. Aside from that, I find the exertion relaxing.

[He bobs his head a little as he takes that in, considers it, and finds himself agreeing with pretty much everything she said.] You know, I wouldn't mind some exertion now that you mention it. I'm not sure when I played volleyball last. [But he'll head toward the net.]

[Number One is the spiritual mother of the Vulcan race a clever and logical lady, yes indeed. There's a hint of a smile on her lips, and she shifts the ball into her hand so she's ready to serve.]

[Sure, why waste words, right? He gives her a little nod to show he's ready and he gets ready to volley back whatever she dishes out at him.]

[She starts out with an easy serve, aiming it close enough that he shouldn't have to run for it. They could both use a warm-up, she thinks, rather than competition.]

[He makes contact easily and gets good distance on it. Unfortunately that distance is mostly upward and not so much over the net as typically desired. It bounces pathetically under the net, heading back in her direction.] I guess I'm rusty.

[She bends to pick it up, not the least bit flustered.]

When was the last time you played?

[She gets ready to serve again.]

I was probably in junior high in a gym class somewhere? [He shakes himself out. He's not going to be bested by a ball. He'll be ready this time.] You?

Honestly, I can't recall.

[Again, she serves. Another easy one. She's out of practice, but she's got good aim.]

[This time his head does go over the net it looks like it's nearly heading out of bounds on her side though. Could be good? He's watching!] It probably doesn't happen much on a spaceship.

[It might have gone out, but she makes a leap for it and manages to bump it back toward the net.]

We do have athletic facilities.

[ Data is out in the facility, watching various events. He's decided not to take part in the athletic competitions - not unless he's needed to facilitate someone else's participation - but he is still interested in seeing everything that's going on.

When he spots her, it's on one of those orange-munching stops. ]

Lieutenant.

[ The small nod, customary of his greeting. ]

Are you enjoying the day's activities?

[He shouldn't even have to ask (though she's sure he would anyway,) because she actually looks marginally relaxed for once.]

It's an interesting diversion. Have you participated in any of the events?

[ He certainly would; observationally based assumptions are a start, but not precise enough to accept as fact. He gives a small shake of his head to the inquiry. ]

I have found observing to be most interesting, though I have not taken part in any activity thus far. As I do not experience physical fatigue or the other affects of exertion, I am uncertain as to whether my participation would be considered sporting. I believe that I may, however, pursue the artistic events.

[ And, with an arched brow-- ]

Have you been participating?

I'm reasonably certain you would not be the only athlete with abilities outside the normal parameters around which the activities were designed. But I understand your reservations. The artistic events are an interesting counterpoint to the physical ones selected by the Wardens.

[And who knew the android had an artistic side? She files that away for consideration. His work must provide some interesting insights.]

I have participated in some activities, but I would not say I have competed.

I am aware that there are a considerable number of competitors whose abilities are well outside the human range of ability, and were any fellow inmate unable to participate for the lack of a teammate, I would happily oblige. But I do not believe that, as an individual, I would feel... right, competing physically. Though I agree; I am pleased that, in addition to athletic prowess, intellectual and creative ability are being celebrated as well.

[ He tilts his head. ]

Participation and sportsmanship, I believe, are the virtues most extolled by the spirit of the event. Perhaps that is the wisest approach to taking part.

That is a reasonable decision,

[she says, nodding. As long as he doesn't feel barred from participation; she'd find that troubling.]

I see no reason to invite undue stress. And taking a more leisurely approach allows me to observe others' participation; I find it interesting to see the different strategies employed to complete various tasks.

[ He nods as well, in turn - ]

Mm. With any population as varied as the one present in the facility, it is most interesting to observe the varying strategies and attitudes with which each individual approaches the same challenge.

Precisely.

[Athletically, she's only interested in measuring performance against her own standard. Information is always far, far more interesting than physical prowess.]

Which artistic events do you intend to try, Commander?
