MarinaNova Annual Olympics!

The Olympics! Such a great, exciting tradition, where the nations come together in friendly competition! The Wardens feel like prison could use a whole lot more of that and have decided to throw their own version of the Olympics to foster healthy competition, cooperation and teamwork (or maybe it's just a ruse to get you off your butts, Marina!)

Come the morning of 260, there will be a festive mood over the dome. Maintenance bots will be handing out flyers and flags to passers by, encouraging them to join in on the games or cheer on the other contestants. There will be plenty of healthy snackfoods in the sector 0 food stalls, along with bottled water and orange slices. Merchandise such as sweatbands, silicone bracelets and buttons with the MarinaNova Olympics logo will be freely distributed and athletic equipment will be available to anyone who wishes to participate.

There will be a mingle, but we won't actually be organizing any of the events! Instead you're encouraged to use this post to plot, put together teams or competitions based off the available events and just have a jolly good sporting time!

Team sports

The great thing about sports is how they bring people together, fostering camaraderie, sportsmanship, cooperation and healthy competition. Gather together a team and compete against others in these exciting sports!

Beach volleyball — Nets have been put up on the beach at Sector 1. Balls and simple refreshments such as water and orange slices are being provided by maintenance bots, who will also keep score during the matches.

Rowing — Boats are available in Sector 1, for either teams of three or five (two or four rowers plus a cox). Buoys mark up the length of the race in the water and maintenance bots are present to set up the boats and time the races.

Tug of war — Lengths of rope have been set up in Sector 1. The inmates are encouraged to split up into teams and compete in strength and teamwork! Maintenance robots are present to judge the matches, provide simple refreshments such as water and orange slices and attend to any injuries that may occur.

Piggy-back basketball. — Held in one of the basketball courts at the Athletic complex in sector 1. The hoops have been elevated and maintenance bots are present to explain the rules, judge the matches, provide simple refreshments such as water and orange slices and attend to any injuries that may occur. Rather than dribbling, the ball is passed between the players that are positioned on top of their teammates shoulders.

Individual sports

Pride in your individual athletic prowess is just as good as team spirit! If you're not one for cooperation, there are a number of individual sports to compete in, usually against another competitor or against the clock.

Swimming — Available in the Athletic Center swimming pools in sector 1. Maintenance bots are present to time the laps and assist in any drowning related incidents. Several disciplines and lengths are available, such as breaststroke, backstroke, crawl and butterfly.

Fencing — Available in the Athletic Center in sector 1. Maintenance bots are present to time the matches, set up partners or provide a robot partner should another inmate not be available. Protective gear is obligatory. Foils, sabres and epées are all available. They are also all perfectly harmless.

Equestrian — Held outside the stables in Sector 1. Participating inmates will be screened for suitability before being allowed to compete (so if your character has a history of animal cruelty, they may be turned down). Maintenance bots will be present to judge, take care of the horses and attend to any trampling-accidents. The disciplines are show jumping and dressage.

Boxing — Available in the Athletic Center in sector 1. Maintenance bots are present to time the matches, tend to any blunt fist injuries, set up partners or provide a robot partner should another inmate not be available. Protective gear is obligatory.

Rhythmic gymnastics on ice. — Available at the ice rink in sector 3. Maintenance bots are present to provide skates, music for skating routines, judge the performances and tend to any skating related injuries. Simple refreshments such as water and orange slices are available, as are skates and a wide assortment of sparkly uniforms.

Cross-dome obstacle course. — All over the dome. A lengthy obstacle course has been set up across the dome with checkpoints in each sector. There are obstacles the participants must climb over, crawl under, balance, hang, jump, etc, including but not limited to climbing walls, rappelling walls, swinging ropes, nets to crawl under, car tires to cross over and a short distance in which the participant will need to swim or cross in another fashion. Maintenance bots will be present along the track to provide simple refreshments such as water and orange slices, time the races and assist with any obstacle related injuries.

Classic Olympic Sports

Lyric works. — Held in the amphitheater in sector 4. Participants may compete in slam poetry, haiku, rap battles or improvised opera. Maintenance bots will be present to judge the performances and provide simple refreshments such as water, orange slices and cough drops.

Applied arts and crafts. — Held in the art center in sector 4. Participants may compete in poster design, ceramic self-expression or the potato print marathon. Maintenance bots will be present to judge the performances and provide simple refreshments such as water, orange slices and wet wipes.

Prizes

It wouldn't be the Olympics without some great prizes and the Wardens have really brought out the big guns for this one. Although there won't be an award ceremony, you are free to assume that your participating character was rewarded with one or several of the following prizes:

• Winners receive a luxurious gold chocolate medal and all the glory they can eat.

• Runner-ups are rewarded with a slightly less luxurious medal and as much radiated glory as they can stand.

• All participants regardless of placing will receive a t-shirt with the Marinalympic rings and the text “I participated in the MarinaNova Olympics and all I got was this lousy shirt."

• All participants will receive rehabilitation points, with the winners receiving a small bonus amount.

• Participants and spectators alike will receive a button with the Marina Olympics logotype.

Are powers considered cheating?

As long as said powers don't negate the purpose of the event, participants are free to use them. For example, if Kitty Pryde phased through the obstacle course she'd be disqualified, since the point of the event is to get over the obstacles in a traditional, non-phasey manner. However, if Buffy Summers used her enhanced strength to get through the course that would not be considered cheating. Participants are encouraged to be good sportspeople and find an appropriate match for their own physical abilities.

I see bots are around to help with injuries on site... but I'm assuming they're still punishable by the Wheel? :D Because, haha, get injured participating in a sponsored event, but still get punished

Any injuries that require hospitalization are still punishable, but if a bot helps a participant patch up a scraped knee that won't come with a punishment. For example, an injury that only requires bandaging would not be punished but one that requires stitches or a splint would, no matter how non-serious it is.
