day 255 | video; | action;
Good morning. I know it's a bit early, but better to get a good start on one's day than not. For those who don't already know me, my name is Doctor Helen Magnus and I help run the clinic in Sector 3. We're here to help all your bumps and bruises if you ever need it.

I also wanted to extend an offer I've only recently decided to uphold. Some of you may recall my question on linguistics some time ago. Recently, I've been convinced to begin a study on Earth languages, specifically those known by the 21st century. I have a wide variety of languages available, so if you're at all interested, please do drop by the educational building, classroom 6 at 6pm on days ending in 2, 4, or 6. I would be more than happy to share what I know. If you have a specific language you would like to study, but aren't certain I know it, ask. I may surprise you.

[ later today, she can be found in the clinic as usual or heading for the sizzle and sear, as she wants a good cup of tea and that place reminds her of her not!date outing with jean-luc some time ago. ]

[ OOC: mistletoe kisses are reserved for picard. i'm not planning on doing scheduled posts for the language class, so feel free to assume those will start happening next dayweek. ]

[Tieria would have considered her lucky if that was the topic of discussion, but it wasn't. He assumed she knew, so he went right into the actual reason for his visit.]

I need a follow up on an injury I sustained when the raptors were loose. It has already been treated by the hospital, but I do not feel comfortable going back there.

[He was glad for alternatives.]

Of course. What was the original injury? [ she moves closer so she can inspect him easier.

cases like this are exactly why she went through the trouble of setting up the clinic in the first place. she wants a place where her fellow inmates will feel comfortable going. ]

[He unbuttoned the cuff on the sleeve of his right arm and very gingerly started to roll it up, revealing a well-wrapped bandage underneath. The wrapping extended almost the entire length of his forearm.]

I received a gash from one of the raptors while fending it off.

[Under the bandage, it was neatly sutured closed, clearly done by one of the hospital bots. For the most part, it was progressing nicely, albeit quickly compared to a normal human, however there were a few signs of irritation around some of the sutures. It was most likely from him attempting to use the arm normally and pulling the stitches slightly on accident.

As for the rest of him, he did appear just as tired as he had sounded when he called, but he was bearing it fairly well... for now.]

[ just to be on the safe side, she pulls on a pair of latex gloves. one of these days she should really ask if anyone here has a latex allergy...

she's very careful and thorough as she examines the injury, clearly knowing her way around well. it looks good for the most part, though she does frown just a touch at the slight irritation she can see. ]

It looks like it's healing nicely. The sutures are doing what they should be doing and it isn't infected. It does seem as though it's been strained a little recently. I would suggest you try not to use it if possible, give it time to rest, and come back in a couple of days. It's doing fine otherwise, so I don't think you have anything to worry about.

[ she steps back to pull the gloves off her hands and toss them into the wastebin, giving him time to respond before she asks if that's everything. ]

[No need to worry about latex here. Tieria had no allergies.

He nodded at her assessment, kind of glad she didn't ask about his healing factor. He wasn't surprised she mentioned not using it. He'd been a bit absentminded about it, honestly.]

A couple of days then.

[He would wait for her to finish redoing the wrapping before fixing his sleeve again.]

[ she's known beings with the ability to heal instantly. this is nothing out of the ordinary for her. ]

With the rate this is going, that should be more than enough.

[ and she'll make certain everything is wrapped and clean before nodding her approval. ]

If that's all you have concerns about, I'll see you in a few days.

[ unless he'd like to sit around and chat, which she wouldn't be adverse to. ]

No. I believe that is all for now.

[He still hesitated slightly, as if he did want to ask something, but was too nervous or shy to try. He carefully eased off the exam table, as it was a little difficult with only one arm to properly brace himself, and straightened his shirt once he was standing. He was stalling.]

Doctor... [Now he was definitely nervous.] this may seem an odd question... [And he felt it was an odd one, but he'd started down this road already with someone, and he felt oddly comfortable with her. Relying on one person's opinion about something like this wasn't really good research, after all.] Have you ever been in love with someone?

[ it is an odd question, at least for her. it's not a question she's been asked often, as the presence of her daughter at home three years ago had been an answer in and of itself. here, so few people know of ashley's existence that it's a little bit of a surprise. what isn't a surprise is her reaction. there's a flash of emotion, difficult to name, and she seems to shake herself from her thoughts, images of her former fiance, of her daughter, of people she has loved and lost. and, of course, the man she has come to love here.

the answer to that question is simple, but not one a woman like her wants to give. ]

Yes. I have. [ a handful of times, but they were each important. ] What brought that up? [ not that she sounds as though she minds. now she's just curious as to why someone would ask her of all people about this little thing called love. ]

I was thinking two nights ago. [And getting woefully drunk, but he won't get into that.] I had been asking after several former residents with the Warden AI, and it pointed out to me that I had asked about others not from my home world. Apparently, it thought that was a development for me.

[He hadn't thought it was strange at the time, but later on...]

I was attempting to determine my reasons for asking about those who were not from my team, as I do not normally associate outside that circle. Something was different about them... about how I felt about them.

[ she isn't entirely certain where he's going with this, but she's curious enough to find out. ]

As though being without them was more difficult to bear than you'd imagined and you've no idea why?

[ if she sounds as though she knows how this feels, well.. she does. she can't imagine life without jean-luc at this point, which is difficult enough for her on a good day. ]

[He actually sighed, like he felt he was admitting to a weakness. Though, not entirely a bad one... but more that it left him with something to worry about and a way for someone to get at him at someone else's expense.]

Yes.

[He had been looking sort of off to the side during this, but he does raise his gaze up to look more at her.]

You understand, then?

[ does she understand? far more than she wants to admit. for a moment, she lowers her gaze to her hands, where she's turning over a pair of gloves. ]

Oh yes. I suppose it isn't entirely a bad thing, but these feelings make losing those people all the more difficult to bear.

[ she's worried that'll happen to her here someday, and it will sooner than she's prepared for. ]

[He nodded slowly, then considered his next question carefully.]

What about in a situation like this? It is one thing if you know you will not be taken away, or if you know they will not suddenly be taken away. However, here, that is different. Would you take that risk?

[His words were cautious in tone and pacing because he didn't want to upset her.]

[ she pauses at that questions. it's something she's asked herself many, many times and she blames both rebekah and jean-luc for changing her perspective on this even a little bit. ]

I suppose it depends on the person. You have to decide if the pleasure and closeness you receive from each other is worth the possibility of loss.

[ she gives a half-shrug at his question, as though it isn't something that applies to her at all. ]

This place operates under a different structure from my life. Personally, I've found that this difference allows me to be more free with my friendships.

[ which is why she's answering him instead of avoiding the issue. she is going to be in such a bad place in a few days... ]

[He considered her words for a moment.]

So, you have taken that step, then, with someone here?

[Because telling him he had to decide if it was worth the risk and then stating she was more free with her own relationships kind of hinted at the idea she might have taken the risk herself.]

[ she takes time to consider this question as well, feeling as though she's both trapped in a q&a session she never wanted and curious as to why he's asking this. ]

In a manner of speaking, I suppose so. [ they haven't put an actual label to anything, but they've admitted to things, to feelings they share. and if that doesn't mean they're ready to take that step, then she doesn't know what will. ] We haven't really given it much of a label as of yet.

Does it have to be labeled?

[Because Tieria was utterly clueless about relationship statuses. And now, as much as he hated to admit it, he was actually curious as to who...]

That depends entirely on the person.

[ for her? yes. oh she loves having labels and things that go squarely in those labels, especially when it involves personal relationships. so this half-relationship whatever it is thing with jean-luc is driving her batty. ]

What about you? Do you prefer labels? Does the person you're with prefer labels?

[He wasn't aware if he might be crossing over any lines, so she'd have to tell him to back off. He was used to just getting the answers he wanted, so he didn't know there might be boundaries.

His tone and attitude, however, wasn't so much demanding as it might have been in other situations, but more curious.]

Who is the other person?

[ he's definitely getting there. ]

Personally, I do. I much prefer to know exactly where I stand with everyone around me. As for Jean-Luc, I've no idea.

[ ... whoops. oh well, too late now. she offers him a tight-lipped smile, trying not to show that she's at all uncomfortable with this topic of conversation and likely failing. ]

Any other questions I think are best asked another day. [ she's a difficult woman to have a personal conversation like this with, after all. ]

[Oh-ho. He looked about to ask more when she mentioned the name, but then caught the hint at her next statement. He nodded, backing off now. Learning how to figure out where the 'line' was had been hard. He wasn't exactly socially inept, but he wasn't great at those cues, either. Demanding information until he got it interrogation style, however, while something he was used to doing, he understood it was pretty much the wrong way to do things in normal situations like this.]

Of course. Another day, then.

[He seemed almost shy about it, and a little like he was unlikely to ask again. Whether that suited Helen or not, asking questions about anything like this was hard for him to begin with.]

I shall see you again in a few days for another follow-up. [As she had pointed out earlier, he needed to remember not to use the arm too much, so coming in for the little learning sessions had obviously been put off to the side for now.]

Of course. Take care, Tieria.

[ at least he's taking the cue. she just doesn't do emotions well, especially when they involve talks like this one. perhaps another day she would be better able and willing to have a better talk on the subject. perhaps. for now, she just gives a tight smile and a nod, hoping that he will at least remember to rest his injury so it doesn't pull too much and require an even longer recovery. ]
