day 254 - video; 001
[ When Riker appears at last he's circled back round to Sector 2, framed against the hedge maze. There's no distractions, and his introduction is absent of distractions too. At least at first. ]

Good evening. I hope it's not too late in the day to introduce myself, but I didn't wish for anyone to be surprised to spot me around the place. My name is William Riker, and I just arrived with the latest group of people. It's nice to meet all of you, if unfortunate considering the circumstances. I appreciate the kindness that has been shown to me since my arrival.

I understand some-- [ And suddenly Riker stops, looking up. It's started to rain, and he wipes a single raindrop off his nose. ] I'd better wrap this up. I'd like to speak to some friends of mine, whom I'm reliably informed have been here for a while. Maybe after I get in out of the rain, if that's perfectly alright.

Deanna, I hope you're in somewhere dry.

[ well, she doesn't call him that, but she remembers he introduced himself as that to her so she's being respectful of a man she has the utmost respect for. ]

It's a pleasure to finally meet you. [ she knows he and deanna were being reassigned after their marriage, but she doesn't know if he knows that, so she's going to play dumb for now. ]

Jean-Luc is... [ hold on, she has to think of the right word. ] ...a good friend of mine. [ yes. friends. kissing friends. friends in love, as of recent admissions. cough. ] I run the clinic here, so if you ever need a doctor, I would be happy to help.

[ she has a feeling he's going to grill her eventually on her relationship with his captain when and if he ever finds out... ]

[ He doesn't wholly catch it, not that he could define it, but he does raise an eyebrow, inclining his head curiously. There's a sparkle there. An 'oh, a good friend,' but it isn't something he says out loud. Not yet. It'd be more than unfounded when he doesn't even know that he's thinking it yet. ]

You're a doctor.

[ As though that explains everything shut up Riker. ]

I'll have to bear that in mind, then. What's your name?

[ oh it'll become increasingly obvious, particularly if he ever sees them together. they not nearly as subtle and secretive as they like to think they are. ]

I am, both medical and scientific.

[ it pretty much does explain everything. ]

Helen Magnus. I should've introduced myself earlier. [ but the familiar name distracted her. she does give a respectful incline of her head. ]

It's good to meet you, Helen. I hope Jean Luc hasn't been telling too many tall tales about me behind my back?

[ she gives a gentle smile. ]

Not at all. He spoke quite highly of you. [ high praise coming from jean-luc, she has come to understand. ] I may not have been a resident here for as long as some, but if you do have questions, I will certainly answer what I can.

[ He smiles back, and wonders to himself just how long he's been this Jean-Luc's first officer. Had he already given that wonderful speech at his wedding? Were these the same glowing reports that had gone in his records, the one Admirals at Starfleet Command had shuffled at him impatiently during his yearly assessments while they tried to convince him to move on up. Shuffling that had increased in the wake of the Dominion War, the loss of so many qualified, tactically capable personnel making them more impatient than they'd ever been before. ]

Do you mind if I start with a personal question? How long have you been here?

Depending on the nature of your more personal questions, I will either answer or refuse. [ and at least she doesn't beat around the bush about things like this. she is pretty straight-up about things. ]

A little more than a month. 36 days, to be exact. [ and you can bet she's keeping track. ] I know it sounds like a long time from the perspective of someone newly arrived. [ but there are days it feels like she just arrived and simultaneously that she's been here forever. ]

Depending on the nature of my more personal questions, I'd hope that you'd refuse if they were out of line.

[ i.e. that seems fair enough to him. ]

A blink of an eye, and yet far too long. [ Most of his life had been spent in deep space, with almost as much if not more travel time between himself and Earth, at least. If it took another month to get out of here, it would still be time well spent. Three days would be his preference. He had a honeymoon to get back to. ]

Absolutely.

[ she offers a smile at that: no harm, no foul, glad they've got that sorted. ]

Indeed. At times it seems a lot happens in a very short span of time, but at other times it seems as though little is happening and nothing out of the ordinary. It's the duality of time. Though, I will suggest that you try to find some way to occupy your time. The days pass easier that way.

[ or it might be her inability to remain idle. ]

I don't think I'll have trouble keeping busy.

[ But really, he'd have to look more at what was expected from him before he committed. Without a holo-deck or his duties to perform, even a month would pass slowly. ]

What would you suggest?

That depends entirely on where your interests lie. [ she's not kidding there. ] However, I suspect if you're accustomed to working with Jean-Luc, you may be interested in the Defense Force.

Which is?

I'm certain you do.

[ and that twinkle of interest in her eyes suggests that she is certain he would, if he's known captain picard for a while. ]

An organization known to help serve and protect those who find themselves unwilling residents. They do a lot of good work here and I would certainly encourage anyone interested in lending a helping hand.

[ if he's good at reading between the lines, he can pick up that there's more to the defense force than she's saying. they do a lot of investigative work, too, but she's not really in the position to comment on that. she'll let one of the leaders mention that part over the network. however, if she ever runs into riker in person, she'll be more than happy to explain then. ]

Protect them? Against what? Or I suppose I should ask against whom?

[ It does sound like something he'd be interested in, particularly if Picard is involved. He's his first officer, and he knows Picard well enough to know that he isn't going to settle here, wouldn't put up with it. It reminded him of the Nexus, the logs that Picard had recorded concerning its illusions. It reminds him of his imperfect future. He is not settling, and Picard wouldn't settle either. If he was part of this Defense Force, then Will was confident that it was a front, an illusion of cooperation. If so, he wasn't going to make anyone say that out loud. ]

I suppose if this really is a prison, then at least some of the people here actually deserve to be?

You'll find that life here isn't as... normal as one might think. [ or as normal as normal got with most of the people she's run into here. her own life is hardly a shining example of normalcy, after all. ] For the most part, everyone gets along well. However, there are days it may be wise to remain indoors. For example, a few days ago we had a rather bad raptor invasion, for lack of a better term. Some took it as a time to help those in need get out of harm's way.

[ she does hope he'll ask about it. she has a feeling they could use more of jean-luc's people involved. ]

Perhaps. Or perhaps we're all victims of circumstance. Our captors don't seem to understand the meaning of the phrase "extenuating circumstances."

[ whether she falls into that category or not, she isn't saying. she'll leave it up to him to decide what he thinks of her. and, in all honesty, she's curious what he'll make of the knowledge that she's involved with his captain when and if he finds out. she's betting it's a matter of when. ]

[ He has so many questions; questions like 'but how did they get in?' but instead he chooses not to say anything. Oh, he'll ask, whether it means seeking her out or bringing it up with his captain. Nevermind that in the strictest sense he bore the same rank himself: respecting the chain of command in exactly the structure it had been for the last thirteen years was much more Will's style, and it would make the situation function with the ease of a well worn routine.

He shakes his head.
]

It wouldn't be the first time. I'm sure if you know the Captain as well as you seem to, then he's mentioned previous such encounters as a matter of course.

[ 'Lifeforms such as these' goes unsaid. He's been very careful so far not to go overboard with what he reveals, and while the matter of rank is clearly not a secret, and spaceships are an acceptable and everyday thing, Starfleet and alien life are still off the record, as well as discussions of technology. ]

[ she wouldn't mind answering that one, to the best of her ability anyway. she can see the gears turning in his head; even though she doesn't know him personally, she can tell when her words cause someone to think about them and she can tell these are doing just that for him. good. ]

He's certainly alluded to how interesting a life he and his people seem to lead. It's about as interesting as my own.

[ which is a hint to riker, if he'll pick up on it, that the idea of alien lifeforms is hardly a surprise to her. helen's life is unique, at least at her time period, and what she knows of jean-luc's life shows many, many reasons why they get along so well. she knows a great deal about him, about his family and his crew. she knows every single one of his senior staff members by name, knows where he grew up and even the exact year it should be for him. in turn, he knows about her life, about her work, about john and ashley, two names she never speaks of for good reason, and if he hasn't added up her true age, he can certainly guess at it by now. they've become quite close in a very short span of time and helen has a feeling she's going to be seeing a lot of will riker now. ]

If you're as well-versed as you seem to be, you'll have no trouble settling in. [ not that anyone wants to settle in, but y'know... appearances. ]

Really? There aren't many people who could say that.

[ And he's smiling again, a light dancing in his eyes. She's definitely caught his attention, which isnt surprising considering she already knew him, but he's more and more intrigued about what her relationship with Captain Picard might be. She suggests that she's had as interesting a life. He wonders how many stories the Captain has shared. Stories about him had certainly been among them. ]

If settling in is indeed on the agenda, then I'll attempt it with all due alacrity. I do hope that this is only the first of many meetings, Dr. Magnus.

[ she gives him a smirk and a look clearly saying "wouldn't you like to know?" ] Perhaps that would be a good conversation for another day. My life's work is far too long an explanation for your first day.

[ there's a lot she's not saying, a lot she's omitting or just flat-out dodging, but she has a feeling this won't be the last time they see each other. is it really any wonder why jean-luc fancies her? or why she fancies him in turn. ]

As do I, though if we're to meet again, I should ask what title you prefer to be called.

[ she can work with their ranking system, but she doesn't want to automatically assume one name if he'd prefer to be called something else. it's the victorian propriety in her rearing its head yet again. ]

I'm technically off duty, so Will is fine--if you're comfortable with it.

[ Maybe Commander if they're in the middle of a battle plan, but he has a feeling that being an equal to the other inmates here is going to be preferable; he suspects even encouraged. In a civilian population it was important to blend in. And clearly Captain Picard was already embracing that. ]

Will it is, then. [ she offers a warm smile and a nod. that'll be an easy name for her to remember, considering her own second is also a will. this does make her miss him, but she doesn't want him to be put through any of this. he's been through more than enough as it is. ]

As for me, I'm most accustomed to being called by last name or title. [ her staff calls her "magnus," after all. or "doc." ] But -- [ her eyes twinkle at this and she smirks teasingly. ] --I could be convinced to go on a first name basis with you.

[ And Riker manages an easy laugh in return. It's comfortable, just another example of the easy charm that he manages to inflict on the women he meets with seemingly no effort at all. Don't ask how, there isn't a recipe. ]

We can start with Doctor and go from there. But if we play poker together I reserve the right to drop titles altogether. Everyone is made equal by the luck of the draw--except for maybe Commander Data.

[ Also: playing poker with an android makes you better at bluffing. ]

[ her eyes twinkle in response. she remembers the poker talk she'd had with geordi not long ago. if they do get a poker game going, she'll be very interested in seeing how will riker does. ]

That sounds more than fair. In that case, I look forward to our first meeting. Perhaps a good game is what everyone needs. There was interest in it not too long ago.

[ she's bluffed everything from government officials right down to semi-immortal beings. she has a feeling having riker here at all will make things much more interesting than they already have been. ]
