day 254 | action;
A long time had passed since Deanna had felt the distinct lack of her empathic powers. She had only felt this sort of emptiness once in her life before today and it was no better now than it had been then. Last time, she had thought she would forever be without them and felt as though she had lost a limb, but she was hopeful that this time she could figure out what had caused her to lose them in an effort to get them back. At least she had experience in dealing with this feeling. Not that this would help her much, but it was a start. It was better than nothing.

Unsure where she was or how she had gotten here, and feeling as lost and alone as she had ever felt in her life, Deanna wandered around the area. She passed what looked like a park of some sort, a library, and something that looked like a residential building. That seemed a little more permanent than she had been hoping for. She'd listened to the welcome message, but it definitely hadn't seemed like something the Federation would condone, which meant that she had been kidnapped somehow. That wasn't a good thing for many reasons and she didn't like to think of what Captain Picard might do when he found out, let alone Will Riker. It was inevitable that one of them would and she doubted either would take it well.

Still, being here was an opportunity to learn about a new location and Deanna intended to do as much information-gathering as she could despite the situation she had recently been exposed to and the one she was in now. What she really needed was a way to contact Starfleet, if not Captain Picard himself. She had found something that seemed like a communicator, but without having someone she trusted verify it, she was hesitant to use it. Whatever the case, she much preferred to make contact on her own terms and that included being in possession of her empathic abilities. So for now she kept searching the area. It wouldn't do her any good to stay in one place.

[ ooc: deanna can be found anywhere in the dome today, but she starts out in sector 2. ]

I'm sure you have. Being away from those whose presence we've grown used to is difficult. [ and then because it feels like she needs to offer something in return: ] It's really good to see you, too.

[ oh but that's... her face falls just a little bit at that revelation. she hadn't been aware that geordi was around, too. somehow that makes it more difficult. ] So he's been gone for two days? I'm sorry, Data. If he had any choice, I know he would have wanted to stay or take everyone with him.

[ she's assuming it isn't a choice -- from what she's heard from everyone so far, it doesn't sound like it is and she knows geordi well enough to know he really would have fought hard to bring everyone with him. he wouldn't leave them behind unless he thought he could do more good on the other side. ]

Are you doing well here? [ ever the counselor and friend. she will always check on everyone's mental health. ]

I am certain that he would have; there is no indication that any individual has been able to voluntarily leave the facility, but I have great difficulty believing that Geordi would have done so were he given the opportunity, under the circumstances.

[ His thoughts are very much the same on the matter, and his recent discussion with the warden after Geordi's departure has only furthered his belief that those who leave do not do so of their own free will.

The question inspires a brief moment of contemplation, before he nods. ]

Under the circumstances, I believe I am. The Captain and I are both working with the Defense Force, on a team dedicated to investigating the circumstances and nature of our imprisonment as well as patrolling to ensure the safety of our fellow "inmates."

[ He indicates the surrounding area with a brief nod. ]

I currently lead the patrol team for this sector. I am also on what I would characterize as friendly terms with a number of individuals.

[ the idea of leaving not being a conscious decision does seem to make the most sense given the circumstances. deanna nods thoughtfully as she listens to what data's telling her. ]

I've heard several people mention this organization to me and I think I'd like to look into it once I've settled in here. It sounds like something that's worth working with.

[ she'll have to remember that, wondering vaguely what the captain's job in the organization is. ]

I'm glad, Data. We can all use a few friends in a situation like this. [ for better or worse. she's certainly going to encourage him to keep making those friends, for his benefit more than the number of allies they have because of it. ] I've met some friendly people as well so far. This certainly isn't like any prison I've ever seen before.

I believe that it is; their goals are most admirable.

[ He arches a brow, even as he nods in agreement with the assertion; the majority of individuals are indeed generally friendly. But, the issues with the prison itself - ]

It is a most unusual facility, in a number of ways. Within the confines of the prison and the limitations of the rules our captors impose, there is a considerable degree of freedom granted to those present. However, it would also seem to be a logical contradiction that the wardens of the prison stress their desire to rehabilitate those present, yet maintain that all inmates are given a life sentence without any possibility of release.

[ that's a large point in the favor of the force; data's enthusiasm and support means just as much as captain picard's. ]

That does sound contradictory, but it would help to explain why no one seems to leave of their own free will. [ not that this makes it any easier to deal with. ] I wonder what their definition of "rehabilitation" is or what they really want us to accomplish while we are here.

I find their claims of the nature of this facility and the purpose of our imprisonment to be suspect, at best. Unfortunately, we have not yet determined what their agenda truly is.

And until we do, there's no telling what they might subject us to or decide is "fair."

[ she agrees with the whole suspect thing. none of this makes any sense. wearily she sighs and lifts a hand to pinch the bridge of her nose. not being able to sense anything is really upsetting on a good day. on this sort of day, it's getting in the way of her normal routine. ]

If I could just sense whoever is in control...

[ He tilts his head slightly, frowning at the gesture. ]

Though I am uncertain of whether it will prove useful toward that particular goal, it is likely that you will find your empathy restored tomorrow. Our captors routinely suppress abilities which are beyond the reach of a human on the initial day of arrival.

[ that small bit of comfort is helpful to deanna's peace of mind and she offers a tired smile. ]

I hope you're right, Data.

[ after all, he should remember that first time she lost her empathic abilities. she had felt as though she'd lost herself in a way and dealing with the belief that it would be permanent hadn't been easy. now she's fighting that for a second time, but the idea that it'll come back another day will help her get through this one.

normally she might ask why he doubts she'll reach that goal, but today she doesn't want doubt to cloud her more than it already has. she's got enough to deal with. she'll worry with the extent of her abilities when she has them back. ]
