day 254 | action;
A long time had passed since Deanna had felt the distinct lack of her empathic powers. She had only felt this sort of emptiness once in her life before today and it was no better now than it had been then. Last time, she had thought she would forever be without them and felt as though she had lost a limb, but she was hopeful that this time she could figure out what had caused her to lose them in an effort to get them back. At least she had experience in dealing with this feeling. Not that this would help her much, but it was a start. It was better than nothing.

Unsure where she was or how she had gotten here, and feeling as lost and alone as she had ever felt in her life, Deanna wandered around the area. She passed what looked like a park of some sort, a library, and something that looked like a residential building. That seemed a little more permanent than she had been hoping for. She'd listened to the welcome message, but it definitely hadn't seemed like something the Federation would condone, which meant that she had been kidnapped somehow. That wasn't a good thing for many reasons and she didn't like to think of what Captain Picard might do when he found out, let alone Will Riker. It was inevitable that one of them would and she doubted either would take it well.

Still, being here was an opportunity to learn about a new location and Deanna intended to do as much information-gathering as she could despite the situation she had recently been exposed to and the one she was in now. What she really needed was a way to contact Starfleet, if not Captain Picard himself. She had found something that seemed like a communicator, but without having someone she trusted verify it, she was hesitant to use it. Whatever the case, she much preferred to make contact on her own terms and that included being in possession of her empathic abilities. So for now she kept searching the area. It wouldn't do her any good to stay in one place.

[ ooc: deanna can be found anywhere in the dome today, but she starts out in sector 2. ]

Deanna picks up on that shadow, but without her empathic abilities, she isn't quite sure what it means. She can guess, assuming her words about prisons mean he's experienced some pretty bad ones, but she isn't sure. She makes a note to come back to talk to him another time, too.

"Yes," she answers, figuring it would only be a matter of time before her connection to her captain and crew became public knowledge anyway. "I have served under Captain Picard for several years, if you're familiar with him." And she's been through a lot as a member of Starfleet and the crew of the Enterprise. This doesn't really look like it's the worst thing she's ever seen, at least at first glance. It's not a Cardassian prison, that's for sure.

Well, actually, yes, the guess about previous prisons is an accurate one, but it's not the cause of his dark moment today. That's gone for now, though, and his face lights up as he places her amongst the various groups of residents of the dome.

"Ah! Yes, I've worked a bit with Captain Picard in the Defence Force. And Data I assume you know him, too?"

Deanna nods, her smile warming. Her crewmates are very important to her and she's hoping someday in the future she can offer the people of this prison the same thing she offered the crew of the enterprise, but that will be in a few days at the earliest, once she's settled in.

This isn't the first time someone's mentioned the Defense Force to her and she makes another note to inquire further about that at a later time. Right now, she focuses on his question. "Yes. I've worked extensively with both of them. They are very good friends of mine." Friends, colleagues. Captain Picard is her superior at the very least and she knows both of them extremely well, having counselled both of them on more than one occasion. "I'm glad to see they're making friends here."

"I think they've both been here quite a while," he nods, and shrugs. "It's easy to make friends here. It's a very insular little community, by its very nature."

Easy to make enemies too, for the same reason, but he's not going to go into that on her first day here.

He inclines his head in the direction he was heading before he saw her. "I was just heading out for a coffee. Would you care to join me?"

Deanna's had her fair share of enemies, particularly recently, and that isn't something she wants to really think about, either. So she just nods.

"Relationships are easier to make and maintain when you see each other often and live close together," she agrees. His offer has her pausing, but then she smiles and gives her head a little shake. "Thanks, but... I'm supposed to meet someone soon and I wouldn't want to interrupt your day more than I have already."

“Much like living on a ship in space!” he agrees, with a wink (which is just Jack; he has no idea about her and Riker).

He accepts her refusal with good grace and a smile. “Oh well, you can’t be doing that badly if you’ve got a date already! I hope you have a good time. Nice meeting you, Deanna Troi!”

Deanna just gives a gentle laugh at that, trying not to suggest that maybe he's hit it right on the head. At least he accepts that she isn't turning him down because she doesn't appreciate the company.

"It was nice to meet you, too, Captain Harkness." Sticking to the rank and title she was given. "The person I'm meeting is someone I have already known." Not that she's trying to avoid mentioning that she's meeting her husband, someone she married before she even got here, but she also doesn't want an already awkward situation to become even more so. Besides, it probably won't stay much of a secret for long anyway.

“Ah! Well, they’re a lucky person, then!” he smiles, and he starts to step away, tipping her a cheeky little salute as he does so. “Enjoy. See you around sometime!”
